The Uprising (2026) Review

The Uprising was the kind of historical movie that took its time to show how anger could build until people finally reached their breaking point.

The story was set in England in 1381, during a period when ordinary people were struggling with poverty, heavy taxation and the aftermath of the Black Death. At the centre of the story was Ploughman (Andrew Garfield), a farmer who had already suffered a terrible loss after the plague took his wife and children.

Ploughman had little left apart from his land and his determination to survive. But things became worse when the authorities imposed another tax on the people. For those already struggling to feed themselves, the demand became too much.

The anger among the villagers continued to grow, and what started as frustration eventually turned into a rebellion.
Ploughman found himself joining other ordinary people who decided to march towards London. They wanted their complaints to be heard and hoped to confront King Richard II, who was still very young. Along the way, the peaceful protest became increasingly violent as the rebels clashed with those who stood in their way.

What I enjoyed about the movie was how rough and realistic the setting felt. The people looked poor, the villages looked harsh, and the battles were not presented as beautiful medieval adventures. They were messy, frightening and brutal.

Andrew Garfield also gave Ploughman a strong performance. His character had already lost so much, and his pain made his involvement in the uprising more understandable. He wasn't simply a man looking for trouble; he was someone who had been pushed into a situation where he had very little left to lose.

The movie also featured Wat Tyler and John Ball, who became important figures in the rebellion. Their presence helped to show that the uprising had grown beyond one man's anger and had become a much larger movement.

The young King Richard II also added an interesting side to the story. He had to deal with thousands of angry people while those around him tried to protect the crown and maintain control.

The battle scenes were some of the most intense parts of the movie. There was plenty of sword fighting, chaos and violence, but the story did not completely depend on action. It also showed the desperation that had pushed ordinary people towards rebellion in the first place.

One thing I noticed was that the movie took some creative liberties with the historical events and eventually brought in elements connected to the Robin Hood legend. So, anyone expecting a completely accurate retelling of the Peasants' Revolt might have a few issues with some parts of the story.

Still, The Uprising delivered a dark historical drama filled with betrayal, suffering, rebellion and survival. The story became more interesting as the people's anger grew, because it made me wonder how far they would go before everything finally came crashing down.

The Uprising was a gritty and engaging historical movie. Andrew Garfield carried the story well, while the dark setting and violent battle scenes made the movie feel intense. It was not a perfect historical retelling, but it was still an interesting watch, especially for anyone who enjoyed medieval stories and movies about rebellion.

I love this kind of movie, and I generally like Andrew's performances. I'll have to watch it because what you say about Robin Hood really catches my attention.
