The Fallout es una película de drama juvenil protagonizada por Jenna Ortega, escrita y dirigida por Megan Park, siendo este su debut como directora, también cuenta con las de actuaciones de Maddie Ziegler, Julie Bowen, John Ortiz y Niles Fitch. Se estreno en South by Southwest el 17 de marzo de 2021 y mas tarde se destruyó por la plataforma de streaming de HBO MAX, y New Line Cinema.
La trama en gira en torno a Vada Cavell y como después de sobrevivir a un tiroteo escolar trata de enfrentar y reconstruir su vida.
Contexto
Vada y su amigo Nick van a clases como todos los días, bromean y se divierten en el trayecto. Ya en el salón, ella sale a responder una llamada de su hermana y aprovecha para pasar al baño, alli encuentra a una chica conocida en redes sociales, Mia, e intercambian unas palabras, hasta que son interrumpidas por el sonido de disparos, rápidamente corren a esconderse en uno de los cubículo, poco tiempo después un chico atemorizado se les une, a su hermano le dispararon y esta desesperado. Los tres tienen miedo mientras lo único que pueden hacer es quedarse quietos y esperar que no los descubran.
Días después del ataque la familia no sabe como manejar la situación con su hija, Vada esta ensimismada y tiene problemas para dormir, una noche cuando navegaba en las redes ve el perfil de Mia, así que decide mandarle un mensaje, entablando una conversación sobre lo sucedido. Al día siguiente ella se encuentra con Nick, este tiene ideas para formar un movimiento, hacer algo contra esos sucesos. Mas tarde cuando sus padres ven noticias del caso, vuelve a escribirle a Mia, esta la invita a su casa a pasar el rato, sus padres no están así que quiere compañía. Ambas se llevan bien y se divierten, también planean ir a funeral del hermano de Quinton, el chico del baño, para mostrar sus respetos.
Así pasan los días y Vada va a todos los funerales de las victimas, su condición no mejora, sigue teniendo pesadillas recurrentes y temblores involuntarios, aunque se niega a decirle a su familia lo que le pasa, porque no quiere preocuparlos. La relación con su hermana y con su mejor amigo se vuelve distante, no tiene animo de nada y esta sumida en depresión, la única con la que mantiene contacto es con Mia, frecuentemente la visita y pasan el tiempo, al igual que ella Mia tampoco puede dormir ni a regresado a clases por miedo. Nick ahora es el líder de un movimiento que busca leyes que impidan esos actos de violencia en la escuela. Los padres de Vada no la presionan con el tema de las clases pero deciden llevarla con una especialista, para que esta canalice sus sentimientos, esta acepta y la sesión es productiva de cierta manera.
Un día recibe un mensaje de Quinton y se reúne con él, comparte un momento con este. En otra tarde ve a Nick en las noticias en la casa de Mia, ambas quieren escapar del tema, así que beben un poco y fuman marihuana para relajarse, al regresar a casa tiene un roce con su madre. Vada va a clases obligada, alli solo hay recordatorios constantes de lo sucedido, ella se niega a usar el baño porque no esta lista para enfrentar ese lugar, así que termina teniendo un accidente. Al día siguiente decide compran éxtasis para lidiar con las clases, gran parte del tiempo se la pasa perdida hasta que en un momento de lucidez le pide ayuda a Nick para que la lleve a casa, este le pide explicaciones sobre las drogas pero ella no es muy clara con sus motivos.
Invita a Quinton a casa por una película, lo que emociona a su familia, pero este tiene que dejar la reunión a la mitad después de un mensaje. En la noche Vada tiene un problema con su hermana, al día siguiente sale a ver a Mia muy arreglada, pasa todo el día con ella, después de beber y disfrutar el momento terminan teniendo sexo. Al llegar a casa, su familia estaba muy preocupada, pues habían tratado de comunicarse con ella toda la noche y no habían recibido respuesta, ella les miente y les dice que estaba con Nick. Esto la lleva a discutir con Nick por no haber mantenido su fachada, él tampoco esta cómodo con el estado de su amistad pues Vada ya no comparte con el nada, además se preocupa por las malas decisiones que ella esta tomando.
Habla con Quinton buscando consuelo y lo termina besando, pero este no esta listo para algo como eso, así que se aleja. Vada se siente mal por sus acciones además a estado evitando a Mia desde que se acostaron. Esa noche su hermana se cuela en su habitación, no quiere dormir sola, ella cree que Vada la odia, por haberla llamado el día del tiroteo, ambas hablan y por fin Vada comienza a ser sincera con sus sentimientos. Luego viaja con su padre a la montaña alli se conectan un poco mientras gritan groserías al viento. Esto la anima lo suficiente como para arreglar las cosas con Mia, al ir a su casa la encuentra desmayada en el cuarto de vapor, lo que la preocupa. Sin embargo logran resolver su amistad y seguir adelante, Mia le dice que quiere volver a bailar, cosa que no hace desde el incidente.
Su cita con su terapeuta va bien y Vada es mas abierta con lo que siente, también arregla los problemas con su madre, y le confiesa mucha de las cosas que estuvo ocultando, todo parece nuevamente brillar para Vada. Una tarde mientras espera a Mia fuera del estudio de baile, recibe una notificación de otro tiroteo registrado, lo que la lanza otra vez en un espiral de terror y ansiedad.
Análisis y Opinión
La película me impresiono, como no leí la sinopsis inicialmente pensé que seria una historia para adolescente promedio, hasta que se torno sombría de golpe. Trata un tema delicado y que muchas personas tienen que vivir por desgracia. Esta me hizo reflexionar sobre esa realidad, lo que debe vivir una persona después de un trauma así, el terror que siente día a día y como esto también afecta a su familia y amigos. A la vez me hizo pensar sobre lo ineficientes que son las autoridades al evitar estos casos, el filme critica eso directamente, mostrando un final desalentador, ya que las personas que sobreviven, saben que nunca estarán a salvo mientras ven las cifras de tiroteos escolares aumentar. No importa que movimientos hayan o que se implemente, no se llega a una solución a esta problemática
La actuación de Jenna Ortega, me pareció muy buena, creíble, de verdad parece una chica destruida por los eventos, no tengo muchas referencias de su carrera pero me encantaría verla en otros proyectos. El guion en general me gusto, las relaciones entre lo personajes se sentían orgánicas, realistas, como si de verdad fueran amigos, también refleja muy bien como cada quien lleva el duelo en un caso así, desde personas que quieren hacer algo hasta otras que no pueden expresar sus sentimientos, y se alejan de todo. Creo que la película abarca muy bien la complejidad de algunos sentimientos, como el vinculo entre personas con la misma experiencia traumarte, el efecto de puente colgante, el escape emocional, la ansiedad, la depresión, entre otras cosas mas.
Un detalle de la dirección que me encanto y me parece bien logrado, fue la escena del tiroteo, en ningún momento vemos nada explicito tampoco al tirador, todo se enfoca en los protagonistas y el cubículo donde se esconden, alli sentimos el terror que ellos sienten, solo escuchando los disparos y gritos de las victimas, a la vez que presenciamos el miedo y la desesperación de los personajes, esas simples cosas nos trasportan a la escena y nos hacen empatizar casi automáticamente con ellos.
El final me pareció exacto para este tipo de historia, ya que esto no es una lucha en un solo sentido, es un proceso lento con altas y bajas, donde la persona se enfrenta constantemente a volver a volver a caer en la desesperanza, en especial si el detonante no esta en control del individuo como es este caso.
Recomiendo la película totalmente. Sin embargo, advierto que toca tópicos muy sensibles que no son aptos para todo publico, así que aconsejo ser sensibles con el tema y tomar precauciones.

Vada and her friend Nick go to class as they do every day, joking and having fun on the way. The next day she meets Nick, he has ideas to form a movement, to do something against these events. Later when her parents see news of the case, she writes to Mia again, Mia invites her over to her house to hang out, her parents are away so she wants some company. The two get along well and have fun, they also plan to go to the funeral of Quinton's brother, the bathroom boy, to pay their respects.

That night her sister sneaks into her room, she doesn't want to sleep alone, she thinks Vada hates her, for calling her the day of the shooting, they both talk and finally Vada starts to be honest with her feelings. She then travels with her father to the mountain where they connect a bit while yelling profanities into the wind. This cheers her up enough to patch things up with Mia, when she goes home she finds her passed out in the steam room, which worries her. However they manage to resolve their friendship and move on, Mia tells him she wants to dance again, something she hasn't done since the incident.
Her appointment with her therapist goes well and Vada is more open with how she feels, she also fixes the problems with her mother, and confesses to her a lot of the things she was hiding, everything seems to brighten up again for Vada. Analysis and Opinion
The movie impressed me, as I didn't read the synopsis initially I thought it would be a story for average teenagers, until it turned grim all of a sudden. It deals with a delicate subject and one that many people unfortunately have to live with. It made me reflect on that reality, what a person has to live through after such a trauma, the terror they feel day by day and how it also affects their family and friends. At the same time it made me think about how inefficient the authorities are in preventing these cases, the film criticizes that directly, showing a discouraging ending, as the people who survive, know that they will never be safe as they see the numbers of school shootings increase. No matter what moves there are or what is implemented, there is no solution to this problem.
Jenna Ortega's performance, I thought it was very good, believable, she really seems like a girl destroyed by the events, I don't have many references of her career but I would love to see her in other projects. The script in general I liked, the relationships between the characters felt organic, realistic, as if they were real friends, it also reflects very well how each one carries the grief in a case like this, from people who want to do something to others who can not express their feelings, and move away from everything. I think the film covers very well the complexity of some feelings, such as the bond between people with the same traumatic experience, the suspension bridge effect, the emotional escape, anxiety, depression, among other things.
A detail of the direction that I loved and I think well achieved, was the shooting scene, at no time we see anything explicit nor the shooter, everything is focused on the protagonists and the cubicle where they hide, there we feel the terror they feel, just listening to the shots and screams of the victims, while we witness the fear and despair of the characters, these simple things transport us to the scene and make us empathize almost automatically with them.
I found the ending to be accurate for this type of story, as this is not a one way struggle, it is a slow process with ups and downs, where the person is constantly faced with falling back into hopelessness, especially if the trigger is not in control of the individual as is the case here.
I highly recommend the film. However, I warn that it touches on very sensitive topics that are not suitable for all audiences, so I advise you to be sensitive to the subject and take precautions.
