Review of Killers Anonymous
Killers Anonymous or as it is known in Latin America Asesinos Anónimos, is a police thriller film directed by Martin Owen and released in 2019. The plot revolves around a group of killers gathered in a church basement and the murder of a very important United States senator.
Context
It all kicks off in Los Angeles when The Man (Gary Oldman) receives a call from London, while conducting his last support group session. This call is from Jade, a girl who was given the job of killing a guy but failed, and is now asking for help from her boss to get out of the situation. The Man travels to London to get Jade to explain why she didn't finish the job, she claims it was an isolated event and that it really wasn't her fault, an acquaintance from the past had recognized her and prevented her from approaching the target, he says he will help her but advises her to go home and leave it at that. Jade doesn't follow the prompt by seducing a local girl, they both end up in a closed nightclub, jade thinks they are going to have a good time. However, this girl attacks and murders her, showing that she is another agent sent to make amends with her mistake.
In another scene, a frightened girl is seen entering an empty church at night, where she is met by Joanna the reverend of the place and is taken to a room under the church, when she says a code. Down there, there are already other people who are surprised and angry to see this mysterious woman there, none of them know her and are not comfortable with that, she refuses to answer questions, showing that she is very nervous, but in the end they end up accepting her presence. They begin the session even though two members of the group are missing.
Each one talks a little about his life and why they are there, it turns out that it is a support group for murderers. First, Ben a man who relates what was his first murder and how he resorted to the army to satiate his need to kill, although now out of it, he feels empty and unwilling, halfway through the story comes Marcus, one of those missing, and begins to ask for answers to the nameless girl, Joanna gives time for everyone to calm down and asks this girl to participate at some point in the session. Leandro and this woman get a little closer on the roof of the place, at the same time we notice that a teenage girl is watching the meeting, from the ventilation, Joanna almost discovers her but nothing happens, we also see that The Man is on another roof watching them.
Returning follows Calvin, a Doctor who after an accident, sees his wife die, which opens his mind to another world, from there he is in charge of killing patients occasionally. Leandro, trying to get the girl to talk, begins to say when was the last time he thought of killing someone, he also confesses that he killed a woman, well known in the world of crime, who was his godmother, that hurts him because he feels remorse.
There is another break but when he comes back, there is a guy in the room. This is the senator that the news decrees as dead, he was Jade's target and the target of another anonymous assassin, both failed and now he wants answers. The senator knows Joanna and knows all about the organization because they are both from the CIA, which is also the organization that sets up the meetings, something no one knew except for Crystal, Jade's assassin at the beginning. Everyone is confused and betrayed by the new information, Joanna explains to them the truth, the group is not an AA for assassins, it is really an annex of CIA hit men, and all that time they had been using or helping them to kill dangerous people.
The senator is there because his bosses had planned to fake an attack against him, so that this way he would win future presidential elections, but the plan had failed and now they want him dead for real. The only thing that has no explanation in the place is the nameless girl, who decides to speak, her name is Alice, in her childhood she had grown up with an abusive father who not only beat her but also touched her, one day returning from an old school she discovers that the monster with whom she lived also attacked her sister, tired she kills her father at night, she could never overcome that, and so she seeks help, to stop the urge to kill. Some believe her story but others don't, in that moment they discover the teenager who had been spying on them from the beginning.
The room is divided in two, those who want to kill the intruder and those who do not. Alice intervenes, Joanna gives her a test, if she arms a gun in a set time she saves the girl, Alice nervously fails but Leandro helps her. However, it makes no difference, the girl escapes and they end up on the roof, in the struggle Krystal kills Joanna and everyone sees it, this time Alice turns against the girl, Morgan, afraid that she will talk, begins to hang the girl with the help of Krystal. Leandro convinces her that this is not the way and it seems to work, but it is all a facade, Alice shows who she is and that she knows Morgan.
Joanna appears, who did not die and begins to explain all the theater they put together, she was the one who failed the second attack on the senator, because the organization changed management, the new leader is none other than Alice, and now everything is in the hands of the Russians, the senator's place will be taken by Morgan, Alice's sister, everything that happened that night was a test to choose those who would continue in the organization, only Krystal and Marcus approved. Alice recommends Leandro to wait an hour before leaving, nobody takes this into account and they end up fighting in the church. The rejects die along with Joanna, since she missed the senator's shot, and she is no longer considered worthy to work with them. At the end, Alice is seen calling The Man to inform him that everything went well. Back in Los Angeles, she is the new group leader, taking The Man's vacancy.
Opinion and Analysis
I saw this movie because of the poster, the design and colors caught my attention. At first I thought that Gary Oldman (The Man) and Jessica Alba (Jade) would be the main characters or would have more important roles in the plot, but they were quickly discarded, a disappointment. The movie entertained me, it's not the ninth wonder of the world, but it's not bad, you can easily enjoy it.
The color palette and the montage, I think that was what I liked the most, I have a weakness for that kind of style. Another thing that I loved is the way they tell their stories, where they become the focus of the plot, they also use different resources for it. The staging was interesting, it's as if you were in the theater and they were the actors, in fact one of the characters mentions it, it's as if they were constantly doing monologues.
In the case of the plot, I think it was the weakest part, it really feels predictable, just like many of the Plot Twist, from the beginning you expect Alice to be more than she appears, that part is a cliché. There are certain actions that don't make that much sense and are just there to try to trick the viewer, but taking it from the point of view of her reality, they shouldn't be. Marcus and Krystal's story is not told, I don't know if it's a bad thing or a good thing, for me it's a mystery that I don't need to answer, they are killers and that's it. I appreciate that Alice's childhood was real (not because it's right) but because she really shared something in that encounter.
I liked the framing they use, the little details that are there. It has several sequence shots that I really appreciate, it's interesting to see what a character is doing while everything in her world continues normally. Overall I have no complaints about its technical aspects.
Certainly, I would recommend the film, not because it is a feat of cinema but because it fulfills its function of entertaining and you can have fun watching it without problems.
