Last Night in Soho o conocida en Hispanoamérica como "El misterio en Soho", es una película de terror psicológico y misterio, dirigida por Edgar Wright. Protagonizada por Thomasin McKenzie, Anya Taylor-Joy, Matt Smith, Terence Stamp y Diana Rigg. Fue estrenada en octubre de 2021, y esta dedicada a la memoria de Rigg quien murió antes la salida de la película.
La trama gira en torno a Eloise "Ellie" Turner una chica de pueblo, con un don particular y un talento por la moda, que tiene que adaptarse a su nueva vida en Londres para hacer sus sueños realidad. Sin embargo esto no es tan simple como creyó en un inicio.
Contexto
Después de vivir una mala experiencia con sus compañeras de cuarto decide mudarse a un viejo complejo de apartamentos. Es una habitación sencilla pero muy al estilo de los 60s lo que le encanta, en su primera noche tiene un sueño vivido con Sandie una antigua inquilina del lugar, esta chica era hermosa y confiada, con grandes sueños de ser cantante, también conoce a Jack un casanova que le promete a Sandie convertirla en una estrella, esta pareja fascina a Eloise, que esta ansiosa por seguir descubriendo mas sobre el pasado de estos dos individuos. Al día siguiente inspirada por las visiones, Ellie diseña un vestido como el que usaba Sandie en su sueño, también descubre que tiene una morado en su cuello, justo donde Jack beso apasionantemente a la chica de los 60s.
Su sueños siguen y esta vez Sandie adiciono para un club de Soho, que fue organizada por Jack. Ellie se deja llevar un poco y se pinta de rubio como la chica de sus sueños, también cambia su estilo como el de ella y busca trabajo para poder darse esos gustos, alli conoce a un sujeto de cabello blanco, que reconoce el parecido que tiene esta con Sandie. El siguiente sueño no es tan grato como ella pensó que seria, la realidad no era un cuento de hadas o la historia de una estrella en asenso, Jack usaba a Sandie como quería, prostituyéndola con socios del lugar para sacar provecho. Debido a eso Ellie trata de destruir el vestido que diseña, pero su profesora la detiene, pensando que se debe al estrés del momento, mas tarde en el trabajo del bar ve a John, un chico de su clase que a sido muy amable con ella, este le ofrece escuchar sus problemas si algún día quiere.
Cada día las visiones empeoran y ella duerme menos, haciendo que vea a Jack o tipos que abusaron de Sandie en cualquier lado, tiene miedo constante al estar en su habitación así que decide aceptar una invitación de John y salen a una fiesta, todo parecía ir normal y estaba disfrutando el momento, hasta que comienza a ver los espíritus nuevamente, lo que la hace huir del lugar, John la persigue preocupado, esta no le da explicación pero no quiere regresar sola a casa y menos dormir, por las visiones, así que terminan ambos en la habitación de Ellie apunto de tener sexo, cuando una gran alucinación la invade, ve como Jack enojado con Sandie la apuñala en repetidas ocasiones. Esto genera un gran alboroto que despierta a la Sra. Collins, la casera, ella saca a John del lugar y desconfiada se asegura si Ellie se encuentra bien.
Al día siguiente decide hacer algo al respecto, ella esta segura que sujeto de cabello blanco es Jack así que alerta a las autoridades, ellos creen que esta loca, así que ella comienza a buscar la historia de Sandie en los periódicos de la época, con la esperanza de dar algo de solides a la acusación, cansada de mentir le dice la verdad a John, quien no duda en ayudar, pero en un ataque ilusorio, Ellie casi lastima a una de sus ex compañeras. Sin embargo, ella lo sigue, ya discutiendo en la calle, una camioneta lo enviste, Ellie queda atónita.
En el ajetreo del accidente su jefa revela que él no es Jack sino un antiguo policía del lugar, Ellie lo reconoce de una visión, él trato de ayudar a Sandie y busco que ella dejara ese horrible mundo. Esto la devasta a un mas, así que llama a su abuela para regresarse a su pueblo natal, en el proceso pide ayuda a John para que la acompañe a sacar sus cosas del apartamento. Ya en el lugar habla con la señora Collins, para informarle de su partida, esta es amable y le dice que la policía vino a hablar con ella, por la denuncia que hizo Ellie, preocupados por su salud mental. La señora Collins no va a dejar que Ellie sobreviva ahora que sabe la verdad, así que enveneno su Té para que parezca suicidio, en el proceso aparece John, quien no sospecha nada, Ellie trata de alertarlo pero la señora ataca primero y lo apuñala. El caos desata un incendio en el lugar, lo que traslada la pelea ente la Sra. Collins y Ellie a la habitación, alli están todos los espíritus que la anciana mato, ellos piden venganza y ayudan a la chica aunque inicialmente no se veía así, Sandie ve por un instante la imagen de Jack lo que a impacta, ese momento de claridad le permite ver el mal que le iba hacer, ella misma también en el pasado fue una chica inocente, arrepentida se intenta suicidar para evitar la cárcel pero Ellie la detiene convencida de que tiene salvación, Sandie se niega y le pide que se salve ella con su amigo, arrojándola del cuarto en llamas. Los bomberos aparecen y los rescatan.
Unas semanas después Eloise dirige su propio desfile de modas, en el evento esta su abuela y John, quien esta mejorando sus heridas. Ella esta mas cómoda y parece en paz, también sigue viendo el fantasma de su mama, que esta muy orgullosa, a la vez que el espíritu de Sandie que parece estar muy feliz por ella.
Análisis y Opinión
Al perecer, no leer las sinopsis se volvió mi nueva costumbre, no voy a negar es interesante hacerlo así, es como una ruleta rusa donde no sabes que te tocara. Muy probablemente lo siga haciendo a futuro o tal vez algo me haga aprender la lección.
La película me gusto, me gusto mucho, tiene una estética de mi agrado y la banda sonora es genial, clásica y referente a la época donde se ambientan muchos hechos, también la moda y el vestuario me encanto. Da un mensaje y rompe ideales, con una crítica fuerte, sobre el machismo, el acoso, la perversidad, la manipulación y demás, no solo es terror también hay algo mas sustancial.
Desde el inicio la ciudad no es compasiva con nuestra protagonista, mostrando la crudeza y las horribles situaciones que miles de mujeres pasan a diario, haciendo que ella se mantenga en guardia constante a partir de alli. Así que los sueños comenzaron a ser un escape hasta que ya no lo eran, ese pensamiento que el pasado era mejor murió con ello, la época donde quería vivir se volvió la época de donde quería huir, su idealización se destruye lo que la hace replantearse todo. Ambas historias tienen paralelismos, chicas en busca de fama. Sin embargo, terminaron de formas muy distintas, nuestras protagonista trascendió los retos y se volvió mas fuerte, en cambio Sandie fue llevada a un torbellino destructivo por la industria de la época, no que esta sea mejor claro. Quiero creer que el pasado de la Sra. Collins salvo de cierta manera a Eloise, conocer su historia de ante mano le permitió tener los pies sobre la tierra en la gran ciudad, después de todo Ellie misma se sintió cautivada inicialmente por Jack, lo que no te da buenas referencias (Desde el primer momento se veían las banderas rojas flotando al rededor de Jack)
Muchas escenas logran su cometido, como mujer te sientes incomoda y aterrada, como hombre te sientes ansioso por la forma en la que se tuerce todo. Esa época estuvo carga de muchas cosas, no solo buenas , sino también malas, ver el lado positivo no esta mal mientras no ignores el otro terrible lado. Como mujer agradezco no haber nacido en ese momento de la historia, este no es perfecto pero para eso se lucha.
Maneja muy bien el ritmo y ese giro de trama, aunque no es original, te sorprende, porque al ver la historia de Sandie sabes como terminara de ante mano, la realidad nos ha dado demasiados ejemplos por desgracia, pero no paso, así que te impactas. Me gusto que la idealización de Ellie fuera destruida, no solo la de esos años pasados sino la visión de su mundo actual, es lo que la llevo a madurar y a sacar lo mejor de si.
Sin duda recomiendo la película, es muy interesante y te logra atrapar, además tiene un casting increíble, es muy disfrutable.

However, the girl is very confident with the mastery of her gift.
After having a bad experience with her roommates, she decides to move into an old apartment complex. It is a simple room but very much in the style of the 60s which she loves, on her first night she has a dream lived with Sandie a former tenant of the place, this girl was beautiful and confident, with big dreams of being a singer, she also meets Jack a casanova who promises Sandie to make her a star, this couple fascinates Eloise, who is eager to continue discovering more about the past of these two individuals. Every day the visions get worse and she sleeps less, making her see Jack or guys who abused Sandie anywhere, she is constantly afraid being in her room so she decides to accept an invitation from John and they go out to a party, everything seemed to be going normal and she was enjoying the moment, until she starts seeing the spirits again, John chases her worried, she does not give him an explanation but she does not want to return home alone and less sleep, because of the visions, so they end up both in Ellie's room about to have sex, when a great hallucination invades her, she sees how Jack, angry with Sandie, stabs her repeatedly. I liked the movie, I liked it a lot, it has an aesthetic to my liking and the soundtrack is great, classic and referring to the time where many facts are set, also the fashion and costumes I loved. It gives a message and breaks ideals, with a strong criticism, about machismo, harassment, perversity, manipulation and others, it is not only terror there is also something more substantial.
From the beginning the city is not compassionate with our protagonist, showing the rawness and horrible situations that thousands of women go through daily, making her be on constant guard from there. So dreams began to be an escape until they were no longer, that thought that the past was better died with it, the time where she wanted to live became the time where she wanted to run away from, her idealization is destroyed which makes her rethink everything. Both stories have parallels, girls in search of fame. However, they ended in very different ways, our protagonist transcended the challenges and became stronger, on the other hand Sandie was driven into a destructive whirlwind by the industry of the time, not that this one is any better of course. I want to believe that Ms. Collins' past saved Eloise in a way, knowing her story first hand allowed her to get her feet on the ground in the big city, after all Ellie herself was initially captivated by Jack, which doesn't give you good references (From the very first moment you could see the red flags floating around Jack).
Many scenes get the job done, as a woman you feel uncomfortable and terrified, as a man you feel anxious about the way everything twists and turns. That era was loaded with a lot of things, not only good, but also bad, seeing the positive side is not bad as long as you don't ignore the other terrible side. It handles the rhythm very well and that plot twist, although it is not original, it surprises you, because when you see Sandie's story you know how it will end beforehand, reality has given us too many examples unfortunately, but it didn't happen, so you are shocked. I liked that Ellie's idealization was destroyed, not only the one of those past years but the vision of her current world, it is what led her to mature and to get the best out of herself.
I definitely recommend the movie, it is very interesting and manages to catch you, it also has an incredible casting, it is very enjoyable.
