Zone 414 is a science fiction thriller film, released in September 2021 and directed by Andrew Baird, as his directorial debut. The story centers on a futuristic world, exactly in a metropolis known as Zone 414 where humanoid robots, artificial intelligences and humans coexist comfortably. At the beginning of the story we can see the protagonist, David Carmichael, head to an abandoned warehouse where he finds a desperate girl, upon arrival and despite her begging for her life, he shoots her, then an operative team appears and disarms the girl, who is actually a humanoid robot, this was a test from his client and he passed. The client gives him his real mission, to look for a girl who happens to be the daughter of the creator of Zone 414, a city without barriers where humans and humanoids interact, he also tells him the importance of being undercover, because alerting the authorities would bring an unwanted focus on the place, which is characterized by no violence; he also puts him in contact with Jane, an AI resident of the area and close friend of the victim.

Jane is inside the city, when she receives a call from a stranger, who begins to threaten her, she hangs up in fear, it is not the first time she has dealt with the same subject. Back at work, she fulfills the fantasy of her client, who misses another woman. In another scene, we see a little more of the dynamics of the metropolis where robots are really seen as merchandise, designed to please their owners or clients with anything imaginable. Jade tired of the threats complains to a manager, who assures her that there is no problem and it may just be a customer with a special request but does not represent any danger. After that Jade tries to commit suicide, in an attempt to escape from her reality, but fails because she is a robot.

David arrives in the city and tries to adapt to the chaos he brings, he goes to Jane's place to begin his investigation. She tells him everything she knows, it happens that Melissa, the missing girl, does not have a good relationship with her father and preferred to go to the area to act as an AI, as a mockery to her father, Jade tells him about her problem with threats, when a person tries to break into the house, David chases him away and decides to stay and take care of her, if she introduces him to the manager of the place.

The manager explains to David where she last saw Melissa, although she thought it was a humanoid, she also warns that Jane is not just any AI, that he should be careful. Where they end up, is the roughest part of the city where there is no limit, no remorse with the treatment of robots, there they meet the leader of the building, who refuses to cooperate until Jane threatens him with a bottle, he claims not to have it but leads them to the shipyard of the city, because it was the place where he had her locked up and from where she disappeared.

In the shipyard, they discover the girl's body hanged, which gives the impression of suicide, but David is sure that it is a set-up and someone killed her. Marlon Veidt, the girl's father and owner of the place, prefers to leave the investigation like this, certain that it could end his empire. Jane visits David at night to talk about what happened, she feels guilty, because she thinks she could have done more for her friend, David comforts her and informs her, the results of the case and that he is leaving the place. Jane feels betrayed because he will not keep his promise to help her, they argue, it is revealed why David was expelled from the police and the strange death of his wife. David meets with Joseph Veidt, uncle of the victim and who contacted him in the beginning, there it is discovered that he murdered his niece, because he would tell his brother the horrible things he does with humanoids, now confident that his brother will not do anything and that he can finish with David, he tells what happened. It is further revealed that he also stalks Jane and threatens David to keep him from telling the truth.

That night Joseph attacks Jane and immobilizes her with a special device, David regrets leaving things like that and from helping. Joseph is confident in the whole situation but the device does not hold the AI for long and she attacks him, when she is about to kill her assailant, David appears, she thinks he will kill her to free her and asks him to do so, but he encourages her to kill Joseph, because that will give her freedom. At the end, David appears with Marlon and explains the situation, it seems that both made a deal, the ex-cop would finish with the murderer without saying that there was a murder or that his daughter died, in exchange Marlon would let Jane free, at the same time it is seen that he made a humanoid of Melissa. The last scene is Jane leaving town.

Analysis and Opinion

I don't know why at first I thought it would be an action movie, the poster confused me, but this genre is one of my favorites, so I didn't find the problem to keep watching.

If I'm honest the movie disappointed me, there are scenes that don't make much sense, dialogues that are placed without a reason and tries to make allegories to the bible in a blatant and forced way, as if they were shouting in your face that they are doing that. You could say that the movie is pretentious most of the time, it also feels boring and long, even though it's just over an hour and a half long.

I think it makes the mistake of doing more than they can, it doesn't agree on a single idea or message, but on several and in the end they don't develop anything. At times I thought they were talking about existentialism, about what we consider "life" and the ethics it brings, then I thought it was a critique of capitalism, then I went on to theorize that they were talking about life and death, the bible and finally I felt it would be about freedom. In the end, I understood that it could be everything and at the same time it could not. And it is not that touching on several topics is wrong or not possible, but in this case it seems to be a crossroads of ideas cut without a conclusion.

The development of the main character is almost unjustified, as well as his attachment to the AI, because this guy is presented as the cliché of the ex-cop, with a mysterious past and who has problems with technological progress, one of those who think that the past is better, but at the first scene with the AI, he already feels empathy with her, he already feels empathy with her, despite the fact that in the previous scene he had shot another AI, in a more raw and visceral situation, without remorse, in short he had been hired for not feeling empathy with humanoids, and it is not that Jane is so good at her job, but that they discard his concept so quickly. This happens with almost all the characters, there is no believable development, they are just unfinished ideas.

In the visual aspect they are very normal, sometimes they try to reference¿maybe? or emulate other films of the genre. Something that caused me discordance and I thought that in the end it would have relevance is the use of the security camera, since in the films there are scenes that show what happens as if you were watching a surveillance camera, to imply that in that city there is always someone being watched, but they do nothing with that, they just leave it as something aesthetic. The music is not memorable and neither is the design. It tries to imitate other cult sci-fi films, without bringing out anything new or original, and fails at what it emulates. It's like a bad copy of Blade Runner .

Personally I wouldn't recommend it, and much less to someone who loves or knows the genre. It can entertain you, but it's not worth it when you have better alternatives.
