JJ Shaft is a data analyst for the FBI and he is trying hard to be different from his father, John Shaft II (Samuel L Jackson) who had supposedly abandoned him and his mother, Maya (Regina Hall) when he was still a baby. His best friend, an army veteran and a recovering drug addict who is trying to find his footing again dies as a result of a drug overdose. Unsatisfied with the toxicology report and backed by his doctor friend’s, Sasha Arias (Alexandra Shipp) insistence that the quantity of drugs found in his friend’s system was too much for an overdose, he decides to investigate the matter himself. Unable to get his way, he seeks the help of his estranged father. Together, they investigate the case and develop a bond long denied them by circumstances and a mother’s fear for the life of her child.
This Shaft movie sequel is everything we expected it to be. It is so good to see Samuel L Jackson reprise his role in this movie. I love the father/son relationship and how much John Shaft II seeks to teach his son about being a man in the short time they get to meet each other. The mixture of comedy and action was just perfect and not over the top. Shaft II keeps asking his ex-wife, Maya, to break it up for him and she refuses but he is quite sure that she wants to. It is so funny. The appearance of grandpa Shaft I (Richard Roundtree) was a bonus that did nothing to spoil the flow of the story and I definitely expect to see another sequel soon.
John Shaft Jr. may be an FBI cyber security expert, but to uncover the truth behind his best friend's untimely death, he needs an education that only his dad can provide. Absent throughout his childhood, the legendary John Shaft agrees to help his son navigate the heroin-infested underbelly of Harlem, N.Y. Besides, the locked and loaded Shaft has his own score to settle -- both professional and personal.
