Hello friends, I'm here to with an interesting movie that I watched on Netflix title Shaft and I would like to share with you here.

The movie is about a New York City police detective who goes on a personal mission to make sure the son of a real estate tycoon is brought to justice after a racially motivated murder.

It starts In 1998, called in to investigate the grievous assault of someone outside a restaurant, a NYPD Detective arrests him., the son of a wealthy real estate tycoon, after noticing blood on him.

He claims self-defense. The detective notices an injured waitress, eyeing him, and unsuccessfully tries to coax a statement from her.

His friend tells Shaft that when she and him entered the restaurant, he racially harassed him. He humiliated him back and left the restaurant, pursued by him.

He looks for her, but she has left. Likewise, he goes into a seizure and dies; when he mocks him, Shaft punches him on the nose, and does it again after being threatened with reassignment to another precinct.

At the trial, the judge grants him bail of $200k. He later calls him to thank him for breaking his nose, and says he has fled to Switzerland.

Two years later, he returns to the U.S., and he greets and arrests him. His friends throw him a celebratory party where the Uncle appears, the same character from the 1971 movie, and warns him that his wealth raises his chances of acquittal.

While he is temporarily detained at police headquarters, Dominican drug lord Peoples Hernandez, whom he previously arrested, befriends him.

At the hearing, the judge has him surrender his passport and sets bail at $1 million. He resigns from the police force, vowing to bring him to justice on his terms.

He searches for her but only locates her mother, while he offers his deceased mother's jewelry to hire Peoples to go after her.

Peoples wants him to join them in his drug business, but agrees to the job provided that he sells the jewelry.

Peoples hires his former colleague officers to tail him; the pair reveal a snitch among Peoples' gang who had told him what was happening.

Disguised, him and his former partner, mug him of the money he gathered from selling the jewelry. He then plants the money on them, and makes Peoples think they are double-crossing him.

However, after getting word that he has left the scene, they follow him. Having traced a phone call, he eventually locates her, but Peoples' gang attacks them.

In the shootout, he kills Peoples' little brother. Her brothers arrive to retrieve her, but one is stabbed by Peoples. They regroup at someone's apartment, but are secretly followed by someone.

She tells him her eyewitness account of him murdering someone, he threatens her to keep silent, and then she agrees to accept a payoff provided that she disappears. Meanwhile, Peoples angrily attacks him over his brother's death.

Find out what happened next on Netflix as people's angrily want to avenge the death of their brother.

    Thanks for reading my post.

  2. Film Review: Shaft (2000)@drax1120d

    (source: tmdb.org)

One of the most important important films in the history of early 1970s American cinema was Shaft. It launched a brand new subgenre of action thrillers known as “blaxploitation” and, more importantly, provided African Americans and black people in general with their own first iconic action hero, paving the way for elimination of the last remaining racial barriers in subsequent years and decades. The trend, however, didn’t last long and Shaft received only two sequels. Many years later John Singleton, renowned African American film maker and great fan of the original, tried to resurrect the franchise with another sequel, 2000 film Shaft.

While the protagonist of the original Shaft was New York private detective John Shaft (played by Richard Roundtree). He appears in small cameo as owner of successful detective agency, but the real protagonist is John Shaft (played by Samuel L. Jackson), his nephew who chose career of detective within New York Police Department. Plot begins when he gets assigned the case of Trey Howard (played by Mekhi Phifer), black college student who got beaten by death by Walter Wade Jr. (played by Christian Bale), racist son of wealthy and influential family. Shaft doesn’t take much to find the perpetrator, but Diane Palmieri (played by Toni Collette), waitress who witnessed the crime, goes into hiding. Wade’s wealthy father and political influence ensure that Wade would get released after posting ridiculously low bail and immediately escape to Switzerland. He returns after two years, but Shaft has been patiently waiting for him. He has him rearrested, but during detention Wade befriends Dominican drug dealer Peoples Hernandez (played by Jeffrey Wright). He offers him money to find and permanently silence Diane Palmieri and, if necessary, Shaft himself.

Shaft was greeted with low expectations, and not only because Hollywood had poor record in remaking or resurrecting 1970s classics. The production was beset by conflicts between Singleton and his main star Jackson, while both clashed with Richard Price, screenwriter who, according to their opinion, hadn’t properly understood character of John Shaft and spirit of the original films. Singleton, on the other hand, didn’t allow huge respect towards original Shaft (whose director Gordon Parks also appears in small camero role) to prevent him from delivering a solid crime thriller. Much of credits for that should go to Samuel L. Jackson, one of the most iconic and popular Hollywood stars at the time. He tried very hard to make young John Shaft as “cool” and “hip” as Richard Roundtree was while playing protagonist’s famous uncle.

The plot was, on the other hand, relatively weak and burdened with cliches. On the other hand, promotion of vigilantism as a method of obtaining justice in corrupt and still racially unequal America looked somewhat refreshing compared to “socially responsible” crime films of late 1990s and early 2000s Hollywood. The major difference between old and new Shaft was, however, infusion of “political correctness” that prevented protagonist of becoming “unstoppable love machine”; compared to Roundtree’s successful and charismatic ladies’ man, Jackson’s version looks like a monk. Some of the cast was disappointing, like rather disinterested Toni Collette and Christian Bale who, more or less, recycles his character from American Psycho. Supporting players are much better, including rapper Busta Rhymes in the role of Shaft’s sidekick. But all acting performances are overshadowed by Jeffrey Wright who even managed to win changes in the script to make character of Peoples more interesting. Shaft had mixed reviews, but box office results were solid. In 2019 another sequel titled Shaft was released, but it failed to repeat success of previous versions.

  3. SHAFT (MOVIE REVIEW)@bliss112470d

Shaft is action thriller and comedy movie. It was directed by Tim Story, written by Alex Barnow and Kenya Barris. The movie starred actors which includes Samuel L. Jackson who is one of my favorite, Jessie T. Usher, Richard Roundtree, Regina Hall, Alexandra Shipp and many others. The movie more or less tries to compare young to old generations. JJ(John Shaft Jr), a cyber security expert with a degree from MIT, wants to solve the mystery behind his best friend's untimely death, to do that he needs an assistance only his father can provide. A father who he never knew but heard about then became his only shot at solving the mystery. Although a sequel to the Shaft of 2000 but a bit different in terms of the comedy added to it.

The cast was an interesting one, Samuel L. Jackson (John Shaft) deserves some accolades for his amazing act, for those of us that may have seen some of the movies he starred in like....Iron man 2, Spider Man Far Away From Home, amongst others you would know what i mean. He was also good at delivering his comedic roles alongside being a badass dad. Although Samuel L. Jackson was not at the starting scenes but when he showed up it was no longer a film but a movie, there the action started. Jessie T. Usher (John Shaft Jr) as a modern day man who his mother has succeeded (well almost) in keeping away from the life of his father, with a "No violence" methods carried his role in a more simple manner than i expected. His character could just be omitted and you might not actually feel his absence, aside the fact that he was the one who brought his father to the screen who in turn did basically everything, the shooting, the fighting, talking to the bad guys and all, John Shaft Jr was just transforming to being a Shaft by act. So with the experience from his father during the period of solving the case he then became a true Shaft not just in name but in actions.

I cannot forget to comment on Richard Roundtree (John Shaft and), wow he looked so cool with his white beard, a badass grandpa i thought lol. Looks old but very energetic and so entertaining in delivering his roles. Regina Hall (Maya) also spiced up the movie alongside Samuel L. Jackson, a very hilarious duo at that. A very nice movie to see, a bit predictable here and there but nothing off the chart. The Shafts outfit was great, three of them together on a mission was fun to watch. As the movie went on, it all came together, the bonding of son and father, son and grandpa.

An entertaining movie to watch. If you are looking to see a movie and you haven't seen this you should add this up on your watch list.

Thanks for reading friends, have a great day.......

    Shaft1.jpg IMG

  5. Insomniac Trailer Reactions: Shaft (2019)@rvgenaille2573d

I am a little tired of the remakes, reboots, soft reboots, etc, etc. I get it of course, brands are something we can all get behind because we recognize it and can go with it. I did enjoy Godzilla: King of Monsters but we are getting A LOT of them this year. In fairness, I will likely see this, and probably enjoy it, but Shaft (2019) is not something we needed really.
