Yesterday I was looking for information about a book and I found out that a story about it had a movie adaptation that had just been released almost two months ago, so clearly I did not miss the opportunity and I knew I had to see it, I already know the story thanks to the book, so I would say that my expectations are based on this story and even having had bad experiences with similar cases of movies based on books, it never hurts to keep the hope that it is a good adaptation, so, today I want to talk about "The Boogeyman".

The plot of this movie released on June 2, 2023 is very similar to most horror movies, I mean, there is some kind of entity that haunts and wreaks havoc, in this case, we are presented with two sisters whose mother died in an accident recently and their father is not aware of them, as apparently the death of his wife affected him more than he tells, one day the father who is a therapist receives an unexpected visit from a patient, who unknowingly brings with him an entity that haunts him.

The film begins with a scene of a little girl who does not stop crying while we hear a voice that claims to be her father, but when she approaches we see a hand that is not human, seconds later, the little girl dies off camera. Then we meet our protagonists, the Harper family, consisting of sisters Sadie and Sawyer, plus their father Will, who is a therapist, each member of the family is struggling with the recent death in a car accident of Will's wife and mother of the girls.

Sawyer suffers from nightmares and seems to have a certain fear of the dark, which ends up generating certain night terrors, so he sleeps with many lights on. Sadie goes back to school and must adapt again, but everyone treats her as if she had some disease, they see her out of the corner of their eye and some of them only tell her that they regret the death of her mother, the only girl who cares about her is an old friend, who has a new group of friends who apparently do not get along very well with Sadie, so, in a quarrel with them, Sadie ends up returning home.

Will attends to different patients while his daughters are not at home, when one of these patients leaves, seconds later someone else arrives, someone that Will does not know so he did not expect it, but he tells him that he needs to talk to someone because if not, he does not know what he can do. It is a man named Lester, who explains the situation in which he finds himself, his three children have died and although there are those who think he is to blame, Lester assures him that it is an entity who has killed them.

Will leaves for a few moments to alert the police, he considers that Lester is a mentally ill person who could do harm and ensures that he is home alone, what he does not know is that Sadie has returned and is also there. While Sadie is attracted by some knocks in a room, she ends up reaching a closet where she hears more loud knocks, when she opens the door and enters there is nothing, seconds later her father arrives because he also heard the loud sounds, but he realizes that Lester lies dead and hanging on the door, to what the police consider to have been a suicide, but, has he really committed suicide?

First I want to talk about what drew my attention to see it, as I mentioned at the beginning, I really decided I wanted to see it because it is based on a 1978 story called "The Coconut" by Stephen King and although they certainly do have certain similarities, in the film they took many liberties because they clearly had to adapt much more time, but I must say that if I judge the movie taking into account the story, I really found it bad, because honestly I was expecting them to expand much more on how Lester's children died (this is not a spoiler) when he mentions it to the therapist, but taking away the story and basing myself merely on the movie as an independent product, I found it quite interesting and I want to tell you why.

Well I said it at the beginning when I mentioned the plot of the film, it is very similar to other films of the same genre and what usually differentiates them is usually the entity present in the films, in this chaos "The boogeyman" (being the entity of the film) I found it interesting how they adapted it, the way he is designed did generate certain emotions when I saw him, I couldn't be sure if it was fear or discomfort, because seeing him in real life wouldn't be pleasant at all honestly, but this made the movie more striking, besides the way the scenes in which they show him are constructed.

If there is something this movie is guilty of I would say it is the same as the rest, they are very predictable, they follow the same plot of all horror movies, almost always the result is the same, even I am sure that if I decided to take several horror movies I could find similar scenes or at least many similarities in the same story, if this would really work I would not be complaining, but not being the case, I consider that it becomes a little boring to enjoy "new" horror movies that practically offer the same thing only with another title.

I found the movie entertaining at certain moments and this is what made me able to finish it, but there were also other moments when I just wanted to take it away, something I save from the "boring" scenes is that they try to draw your attention at certain points so that you concentrate there and this allows that the following will be a surprise, something quite used also in others, but I would say that here it works a little better, so everything is not so bad.

It's not the movie I would recommend the most if someone wants to see some horror, but I would say it's worth watching at least once, I also have in mind that I watch a lot of horror movies, so I'm used to many things, but maybe for someone who doesn't usually watch movies of this style if they find it scarier and that's why I would recommend it for people who are not so much horror lovers, because I would say that for them it could be enjoyable, but for those who are looking for genuine horror it's not the best movie, but it's not the worst they could see either.

El día de ayer estaba buscando información sobre un libro y me enteré de que un cuento de éste tenía una adaptación en una película que justamente se había estrenado hace casi unos dos meses atrás, por lo que claramente no perdí la oportunidad y sabía que tenía que verla, ya me conozco la historia gracias al libro, por lo que diría que mis expectativas están basadas en este cuento y aún habiendo tenido malas experiencias con casos similares de películas basadas en libros, nunca está mal mantener la esperanza de que sea una buena adaptación, así que, el día de hoy quiero hablarles de “The Boogeyman: Tu miedo es real”.

La trama de esta película estrenada el 2 de junio del año 2023 es muy similar a la mayoría de películas de terror, quiero decir, hay alguna especie de entidad que asecha y causa estragos, en este caso, se nos presenta a dos hermanas cuya madre murió en un accidente recientemente y su padre no está al tanto de ellas, pues al parecer la muerte de su esposa le afectó más de lo que cuenta, un día el padre quien es un terapeuta recibe una visita inesperada de un paciente, quien sin saberlo trae consigo una entidad que le persigue.

La película comienza con una escena de una pequeña niña quien no para de llorar mientras escuchamos una voz que dice ser su padre, pero cuando se acerca vemos una mano que no es humana, segundos después, la pequeña niña muere fuera de cámara. Acto seguido conocemos a nuestros protagonistas, la familia Harper, conformada por las hermanas Sadie y Sawyer, además de su padre Will, quien es un terapeuta, cada miembro de la familia se encuentra luchando por la reciente muerte en un accidente automovilístico de la esposa de Will y madre de las niñas.

Sawyer sufre de pesadillas y parece tenerle cierto temor a la oscuridad, lo cual le termina generando ciertos terrores nocturnos, por lo que para dormir lo hace con muchas luces encendidas. Sadie vuelve a asistir a la escuela y debe adaptarse nuevamente, pero todos la tratan como si tuviese alguna enfermedad, la ven de reojo y algunos lo único que le dicen es que lamentan la muerte de su madre, la única chica que se preocupa por ella es una antigua amiga, la cual tiene un nuevo grupo de amigas que por lo visto no se llevan muy bien con Sadie, por lo que, en una riña con ellas, Sadie termina regresando a casa.

Will atiende a distintos pacientes mientras sus hijas no están en casa, cuando uno de estos pacientes se va, segundos después llega alguien más, alguien que Will no conoce por lo cual no lo esperaba, pero éste le dice que necesita hablar con alguien porque si no, no sabe qué pueda hacer. Es un hombre llamado Lester, quien le explica la situación en la que se encuentra, sus tres hijos han muerto y aunque hay quienes piensan que él es el culpable, Lester asegura que es una entidad quien los ha asesinado.

Will sale por unos momentos para alertar a la policía, considera que Lester es un enfermo mental que podría hacer daño y asegura que está el solo en casa, lo que no sabe es que Sadie ha regresado y también se encuentra allí. Mientras Sadie es atraída por algunos golpes en una habitación, termina llegando a un closet donde escucha más golpes fuertes, al abrir la puerta y entrar no hay nada, segundos después su padre llega porque también escuchó los fuertes sonidos, pero éste se percata de que Lester yace muerto y colgado en la puerta, a lo que la policía considera ha sido un suicidio, pero, ¿realmente se ha suicidado?

Primero quiero hablar de lo que me llamó la atención para verla, como lo mencionaba al principio, realmente me decidí que quería verla porque está basada en un cuento de 1978 llamado “El Coco” de Stephen King y aunque ciertamente si tienen ciertas similitudes, en la película se tomaron muchas libertades porque claramente debían adaptar mucho más tiempo, pero debo decir que si juzgo la película teniendo en cuenta el cuento, realmente me ha parecido mala, porque honestamente me esperaba que ampliaran mucho más el cómo murieron los niños de Lester (esto no es ningún spoiler) cuando se lo menciona al terapeuta, pero quitando el cuento y basándome meramente en la película como producto independiente, me resultó bastante interesante y quiero decirles el por qué.

Bien lo decía al comienzo cuando mencioné lo de la trama de la película, es muy similar a otras películas del mismo género y lo que suele diferenciarles normalmente suele ser la entidad presente en las películas, en este caos “The boogeyman” (siendo la entidad de la película) me resultó interesante el cómo lo adaptaron, la manera en que está diseñado sí me generó ciertas emociones cuando le veía, no sabría asegurar si era miedo o incomodidad, porque verle en la vida real no sería nada agradable honestamente, pero esto hizo que la película fuese más llamativa, además de la manera en que están construidas las escenas en que te lo muestran.

Si hay algo de lo que peca esta película diría que es de lo mismo que el resto, son muy predecibles, siguen el mismo argumento de todas las películas de terror, casi siempre el resultado es el mismo, incluso estoy seguro que si decidiese tomar varias películas de terror podría encontrar escenas similares o al menos muchas similitudes en una misma historia, que si esto funcionera realmente no me estuviese quejando, pero al no ser el caso, considero que vuelve un poco aburrido el disfrutar de “nuevas” películas de terror que prácticamente ofrecen lo mismo sólo que con otro título.

La película me pareció entretenida en ciertos momentos y esto fue lo que hizo que pudiera terminarla, pero también hubo otros momentos en los que sólo quería quitarla, algo que salvo de las escenas “aburridas” es que intentan llamar tu atención en ciertos puntos para que te concentres allí y esto permita que lo siguiente será una sorpresa, algo bastante usado también en otras, pero diría que aquí funciona un poco mejor, por lo que todo no es tan malo.

No es la película que más recomendaría si alguien desea ver algo de terror, pero diría que vale la pena verla al menos una vez, también tengo en cuenta que soy de ver muchas películas de terror, por lo que estoy acostumbrado a muchas cosas, pero quizás para alguien que no suele ver películas de este estilo si le resulte más aterrador y justo por eso es que la recomendaría para personas que no son tan amantes del terror, porque diría que para ellos podría ser disfrutables, pero para aquellos que busquen terror genuino no es la mejor película, pero tampoco es lo peor que podrían ver.
