Faltan pocas semanas para que se lleve a cabo la entrega de los Premios de la Academia; justamente en los actuales se aprecia (en mi opinión) un mejor listado de las películas nominadas de lo que fue el pasado año aunque lamentablemente hay algunas que recibieron aclamadas críticas y no sé tomaron en cuenta para ser parte de esa gran noche de premios al cine o solamente obtuvieron una sola nominación y en esta publicación haré reseña de ese film que espero que con ese único reconocimiento pueda captar aún más público que debió tener en el momento de su estreno.
There are only a few weeks left until the Academy Awards; precisely in the current ones (in my opinion) there is a better list of nominated films than last year, although unfortunately there are some that received acclaimed reviews and were not taken into account to be part of that great night of film awards or only got a single nomination and in this publication I will review that film that I hope that with that single recognition can capture even more public than it should have had at the time of its release.
El género "coming of age" es uno de los cuales me gusta mucho ver; en mi opinión hay muy buenas historias dramáticas que tienen un contenido real, fuerte que puede por momentos ser esperanzador, divertido y devastador; justamente en La noche de ayer por fin le di oportunidad a una de las muchas producciones de A24, un film que está dentro de ese género y que fue estrenado primeramente en el Cannes Film Festival en su edición número 75 y que posteriormente tuvo un estreno en las salas de cine entre octubre y noviembre del pasado año; el film a qué hago referencia es "Aftersun" la cual relata la historia de un recuerdo, los últimos días de vacaciones que disfrutó "Sophie" junto a su padre, "Calum", en Turquía. En esta película veremos como una niña de 11 años empieza a tener curiosidad por lo que ofrece el mundo mientras su amoroso padre siente y sabe que no podrá estar a su lado para acompañarla y apoyarla cuando sea el momento de experimentar todo lo que puede ofrecer la vida.
The "coming of age" genre is one of those that I really like to watch; in my opinion there are very good dramatic stories that have a real, strong content that can at times be hopeful, funny and devastating; Just last night I finally gave a chance to one of the many productions of A24, a film that is within that genre and that was first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in its 75th edition and later had a theatrical release between October and November last year; the film to which I refer is "Aftersun" which tells the story of a memory, the last days of vacation enjoyed by "Sophie" with her father, "Calum", in Turkey. In this film we will see how an 11 year old girl begins to be curious about what the world has to offer while her loving father feels and knows that he will not be able to be by her side to accompany and support her when it is time to experience all that life has to offer.
Este film fue dirigido y escrito por Charlotte Wells el cual es su primer trabajo cumpliendo ambas funciones y del cual no solo ha recibido aclaradas críticas, nominaciones y premios los cuales están más que nada identificados al cine independiente; en este primer trabajo decide mostrar pocos momentos de una mujer adulta y se enfoca más que nada en las vivencias de una niña que recientemente cumplió 11 años de edad y quién pareciera estar preparada para experimentar todo lo que le ofrece la vida; eso nos da la posibilidad de ver diferentes momentos o escenas que pueden ser meramente normales, tener tomas normales o en algún momento crear perspectivas diferentes dependiendo de los ángulos que ofrece la cámara la cual en su mayoría nos da imágenes impresionantes; hay tomas que son difíciles de obviar sea por la fotografía o por los momentos importantes de la historia y eso en mi opinión hace que artísticamente sea excelente.
La historia es completamente hermosa y dramática; una autobiografía emocional tal como lo ha descrito Wells, nos muestra en parte algo sobre la relación de ella y su padre; en esta oportunidad la historia mayormente la apreciamos desde el punto de vista de una niña que está entrando a la adolescencia; la curiosidad y la necesidad de encajar la convierte en una espectadora silenciosa sin miedo al fracaso aunque creo que eso es debido al amor que sabe que encontrará cada vez que esté con su padre el cual pareciera que también se prepara para ese cambio que deberá enfrentar su hija aunque él tenga que lidiar con otros aspectos de su vida; esto es magnífico y hermoso porque en momentos puede ser nostálgico el revivir con ayuda de ese relato esos momentos de vida en dónde dejamos atrás la niñez y empezamos a disfrutar del comienzo de la adolescencia.
This film was directed and written by Charlotte Wells which is her first work fulfilling both functions and which has not only received rave reviews, nominations and awards which are mostly identified to independent cinema; in this first work she decides to show few moments of an adult woman and focuses more than anything on the experiences of a girl who recently turned 11 years old and who seems to be ready to experience everything life offers her; This gives us the possibility to see different moments or scenes that can be merely normal, have normal shots or at some point create different perspectives depending on the angles offered by the camera which mostly gives us impressive images; there are shots that are difficult to miss either because of the photography or because of the important moments of the story and that in my opinion makes it artistically excellent.
The story is completely beautiful and dramatic; an emotional autobiography as described by Wells, it shows us in part something about her and her father's relationship; this time the story is mostly from the point of view of a girl who is entering adolescence; the curiosity and the need to fit in turns her into a silent spectator without fear of failure although I think that is due to the love she knows she will find every time she is with her father who seems to be also preparing for the change his daughter will have to face although he has to deal with other aspects of his life; this is magnificent and beautiful because at times it can be nostalgic to relive with the help of this story those moments of life where we leave childhood behind and begin to enjoy the beginning of adolescence.
Después de ver el film, pude leer que Wells planeo que tanto Paul Mescal como Frankie Corio pasaron un tiempo vacacional en el resort para que al momento de comenzar a filmar se viera natural su relación como padre e hija y ese fue un plan que funcionó perfectamente. La actuación de Corio como la joven "Sophie" fue sumamente buena; me gusta que tenga esa sensación de depender del amor de su padre, de disfrutar los momentos que tienen juntos y que quiera verlo feliz así como seguramente ella lo está, pero también me gusta que tenga esa independencia al momento de ver cómo otras personas actúan y tener la curiosidad de experimentar algo parecido a lo que ella ve con mucha naturalidad; me gusta que este personaje mantenga un alto grade de inocencia, curiosidad e independencia, es algo que me gustó ver y ojalá hubiera recibido algún reconocimiento por su trabajo. Este film recibió una sola nominación a los Premios de la Academia y fue por el trabajo de Mescal el cual interpreta a "Calum" padre de Sophie; posiblemente sea en gran parte del film el hombre más positivo del mundo y que está enfocado a crear momentos imborrables, felices, momentos llenos de consejos, apoyo y un incondicional amor; creo que esa es mi manera de describir a este personaje que está dispuesto a todo para demostrar el más alto grado de normalidad aunque en mi opinión, Calum está dispuesto a enseñar a su hija que la ama con tal fuerza que por momentos le hace superar cualquier sufrimiento; con esto diré que el trabajo de Mescal es suficiente para recibir esa nominación y me gustaría decir que puede hasta ganar, pero la competencia con respecto al renglón de mejor actor, es una muy competitiva.
After watching the film, I was able to read that Wells planned for both Paul Mescal and Frankie Corio to spend some vacation time at the resort so that by the time filming began it would look natural for their relationship as father and daughter and that was a plan that worked perfectly. The performance of Corio as the young "Sophie" was extremely good; I like that she has that feeling of depending on her father's love, of enjoying the moments they have together and that she wants to see him happy as she surely is, but I also like that she has that independence to see how other people act and have the curiosity to experience something similar to what she sees very naturally; I like that this character maintains a high degree of innocence, curiosity and independence, it is something I liked to see and I wish she would have received some recognition for her work. This film received only one Academy Award nomination and that was for the work of Mescal who plays "Calum" Sophie's father; he is possibly for much of the film the most positive man in the world and is focused on creating indelible, happy, moments filled with advice, support and unconditional love; I think that's my way of describing this character who is willing to do anything to demonstrate the highest degree of normality although in my opinion, Calum is willing to teach his daughter that he loves her with such strength that at times it makes him overcome any suffering; with this I will say that the work of Mescal is enough to receive that nomination and I would like to say that he can even win, but the competition regarding the line of best actor, is a very competitive one.
No tengo ninguna duda en decir que está es una de las mejores películas que he visto; el relato de las vacaciones de esta niña junto a su padre me hizo recordar vivencias que tuve junto a mi padre tanto cuando era niño y adolescentes y que ahora hago lo posible e imposible para cuidarlo así como él me cuido a mí; puede ser esto lo más personal que escriba en una reseña, pero siempre he creído que para poder sentir que un film o una historia es perfecta, es cuando puedes relacionarla con momentos de tu vida; esto ya me sucedió con "Banshees of Inisherin" y ahora mucho más con "Aftersun". Me hubiera gustado que Wells recibiera una nominación sea como mejor director o por guion original porque este trabajo por completo ha creado un impacto sobre muchas personas, es algo muy poderoso, muy bien hecho porque de imágenes, simpleza, pocos diálogos aunque con frases perfectas y eso sí con la música especial, nos va preparando para algo que en realidad no se puede lidiar y por eso crea el impacto fuerte al momento de terminar la historia; ojalá que en un futuro vea más trabajos de Wells, creo que es una de las directoras y guionistas a estar pendiente en el futuro sea cual sea la historia que quiera relatar y también hago referencia a los dos protagonistas en dónde Mescal ya ha creado una gran base de seguidores y próximamente será parte de grandes producciones y con respecto a Frankie Corio solo puedo decir que en su primer rol protagónico ya ha recibido siete premios y seguramente muy pronto se volverá a ver en la gran o pequeña pantalla. No se queden solamente en ver las películas nominadas cómo las mejores, vean otras más como Aftersun que debió estar en esa lista, vean la que realmente fue una de las mejores películas del 2022.
I have no doubt in saying that this is one of the best movies I have ever seen; the story of this little girl's vacation with her father made me remember experiences I had with my father as a child and teenager and that now I do my best and impossible to take care of him as he took care of me; this may be the most personal thing I write in a review, but I have always believed that to be able to feel that a film or a story is perfect, is when you can relate it to moments of your life; this already happened to me with "Banshees of Inisherin" and now much more with "Aftersun". I would have liked that Wells received a nomination either as best director or for original screenplay because this work has completely created an impact on many people, it is something very powerful, very well done because of images, simplicity, few dialogues although with perfect sentences and that yes with the special music, it prepares us for something that in reality cannot be dealt with and that is why it creates the strong impact at the moment of finishing the story; I hope to see more work from Wells in the future, I think she is one of the directors and screenwriters to watch out for in the future whatever the story she wants to tell and I also refer to the two protagonists where Mescal has already created a large fan base and will soon be part of major productions and with respect to Frankie Corio I can only say that in his first starring role he has already received seven awards and surely very soon will be seen again on the big or small screen. Don't just watch the movies nominated as the best, watch others like Aftersun that should have been in that list, watch the one that really was one of the best movies of 2022.
