Batman: Knightfall – Part 1: Knightfall - Review [ES - EN]

Después de la finalización del universo cinematográfico animado basado en los personajes de DC Comics, conocido como "Tomorrowverse"; esa decisión les ha llevado a presentar muy pocas producciones en los últimos 2 años, una dividida en dos capítulos, Watchmen (2024), y  Aztec Batman (2025); a ambas películas les sigue una trilogía protagonizada por el icónico Batman, la cual relata uno de sus arcos más inolvidables e importantes en su historia como el vigilante de Gótica al enfrentar a un formidable enemigo que buscará quebrar su cuerpo y su espíritu.

Following the conclusion of the animated cinematic universe based on DC Comics characters, known as “Tomorrowverse,” that decision has led them to release very few productions over the past two years—just one, divided into two parts: Watchmen (2024) and Aztec Batman (2025); both films are followed by a trilogy starring the iconic Batman, which recounts one of the most unforgettable and significant story arcs in his history as Gotham’s vigilante as he faces a formidable enemy who seeks to break both his body and his spirit.

Posiblemente, el arco de Knightfall sea de los más apreciados en lo que es la historia de Batman, no solamente por el hecho de cómo él es derrotado y lo que posteriormente deba suceder, pero el hecho de la violencia y el diseño de los personajes es lo que seguramente se convirtió en un complemento perfecto en esa trilogía de cómics, lo cual fue perfecto para la época en la cual fue estrenada. Esa característica de ser una historia violenta, gráfica, con un estilo de animación colorido y con un diseño de personajes muy grotesco e intimidante, era lo que esperaba ver en esta nueva producción cinematográfica sobre estos personajes y me alegra que tanto DC Comics como WB mantuvieran esa idea, lo cual me generó nostalgia no solo por el cómic, sino por otras producciones animadas de esa época, en especial la basada en el personaje de "Spawn".

The Knightfall story arc is arguably one of the most beloved in Batman’s history—not only because of how he is defeated and what happens afterward, but also because the violence and character design were what truly made it a perfect fit for that comic book trilogy, which was spot-on for the era in which it was released. That characteristic—a violent, graphic story with a colorful animation style and very grotesque, intimidating character designs—was exactly what I hoped to see in this new film adaptation of these characters, and I’m glad that both DC Comics and Warner Bros. stayed true to that vision. It made me feel nostalgic not only for the comic but also for other animated productions from that era, especially the one based on the character “Spawn.”

La historia está muy bien maquetada, aunque posiblemente para los fieles fans podrán pensar que se resumió en demasía la primera parte de esta trilogía, pero hay que recordar que son formatos diferentes y seguramente cuando se estrenen las dos otras partes, habrá una versión extendida uniendo para así generar una historia completa. Me gustó que de primer momento se provee una información más que relevante para el espectador con respecto a los motivos de cada uno de los protagonistas de esta historia; otra cosa es que funciona muy bien para quien no tenga un pleno conocimiento y este sea la primera vez que ve el quiebre de Batman. Justamente, el transitar para que podamos ser testigos de cómo cae el Caballero de la Noche es lo que más me ha fascinado, porque hay que decir que Batman no cae derrotado al final de este capítulo, sino que se siente perdido desde el comienzo; eso es lo que más he disfrutado, porque este personaje tiene un solo motivo y cuando existe algo que supera tal sentimiento, eso le hace perder su norte, lo cual está muy bien representado en el film.

The story is very well put together, although die-hard fans might feel that the first part of this trilogy was summarized a bit too much. But we must remember that these are different formats, and surely when the other two parts are released, there will be an extended version combining them to create a complete story. I liked that, right from the start, the film provides viewers with highly relevant information about the motivations of each of the story’s protagonists; it also works very well for those who aren’t fully familiar with the source material and are seeing Batman’s downfall for the first time. In fact, witnessing the process by which the Dark Knight falls is what has fascinated me the most, because it must be said that Batman isn’t defeated at the end of this chapter—rather, he feels lost from the very beginning; that’s what I’ve enjoyed the most, because this character has a single driving force, and when something overpowers that feeling, it causes him to lose his way—which is portrayed very well in the film.

En términos generales, "Knightfall" como primera parte de esta trilogía es un verdadero acierto, por lo que considero que fue una muy buena versión cinematográfica; a pesar de ser una producción muy corta, ya que cuenta con una duración de 1 hora con 18 minutos, creo que abarcan lo importante de la historia, dando protagonismo tanto a Batman como a Bane, aunque eso sí, preparan el terreno para el inevitable protagonismo que tendrá el personaje de "Azrael" en los próximos films. Me parece genial que nuevamente se esmere en demostrar la inestabilidad mental de tanto los héroes como los villanos, aunque claramente está la manera en cómo Batman se diferencia de todos por cómo él percibe la justicia y la imparte en una ciudad que cada vez más está hundida en el caos. Todos esos factores hacen que pareciera ser imposible no perder la cordura para sobrevivir en esa ciudad y hago mucha acotación a eso porque ese es uno de los temas importantes en esta historia y lo cual hace que Batman/Bruce caigan derrotados contra un gran rival. La segunda parte de esta historia será estrenada a finales de este año y habrá que esperar algo más para el desenlace de esta historia, ya que posiblemente en el primer trimestre del próximo año es que pueda ser estrenada; personalmente recomiendo este film, sean o no fans del personaje, porque es muy entretenido, aunque eso sí, este es una película dirigida al público adulto por el gran uso de la violencia.

Overall, "Knightfall", as the first installment of this trilogy, is a real success, so I consider it a very good film adaptation; despite being a very short production—it runs just 1 hour and 18 minutes—I think it covers the essentials of the story, giving equal prominence to both Batman and Bane, though it does set the stage for the inevitable prominence the character “Azrael” will have in future films. I think it’s great that the film once again takes great care to showcase the mental instability of both the heroes and the villains, although it’s clear how Batman stands out from the rest because of how he perceives justice and dispenses it in a city that’s increasingly sinking into chaos. All these factors make it seem impossible to survive in that city without losing one’s sanity, and I emphasize this because it’s one of the central themes of the story—and it’s what ultimately leads Batman/Bruce to be defeated by a formidable foe. The second part of this story will be released later this year, and we’ll have to wait a little longer for the story’s conclusion, as it will likely be released in the first quarter of next year. Personally, I recommend this film—whether or not you’re a fan of the character—because it’s very entertaining, though it’s important to note that this is a film intended for adult audiences due to its heavy use of violence.
