En una zona de Manhattan una gran comunidad latina sueña con tener una mejor vida... "In The Heights"
De los muchos géneros que existen en el mundo del cine el que menos he visto son los musicales; de niño he visto varias películas tanto animadas como de acción-real, pero de adulto he visto pocas más que nada que tengan una tónica diferente a lo que siempre se basan este tipo de films y es que esto es lo que siempre me ha gustado muy poco, ya que no puedo relacionar los diálogos que cantan los personajes en estas películas y es por eso que me he alejado de disfrutar alguna que otra película que tenga mucha fama en el público en general, pero tanto el año pasado como lo que va de este en curso se han estrenado importantes producciones las cuales han llamado mi atención y he decidido el verlas para saber si tanto críticos especializados como los fans de este género están en lo cierto; he decidido ver tres films musicales y en esta publicación hablaré del primero de estos proyectos.

In one area of Manhattan, a large Latino community dreams of a better life... "In The Heights"
Of the many genres that exist in the world of movies the one I have seen the least are musicals; as a child I have seen several films both animated and action-real, but as an adult I have seen few more than nothing that have a different tonic to what is always based on this type of films and this is what I have always liked very little, since I can not relate to the dialogues that sing the characters in these films and that is why I have moved away from enjoying some other film that has much fame in the general public, but both last year and so far this year important productions have been released which have caught my attention and I have decided to watch them to see if both specialized critics and fans of this genre are right; I have decided to see three musical films and in this publication I will talk about the first of these projects.
"In The Heights" nos relata la historia de "Usnavi de la Vega" quien vive en Washington Heights, un vecindario Dominicano de Manhattan en New York City, él es dueño de una bodega la cual heredó de sus padres que lamentablemente ya no están con él, pero eso no significa que sea un hombre solitario porque a su lado hay una gran comunidad de latinos que le quiere y le apoya, todos con sus "Sueñitos" en dónde lo importante es tener una mejor vida, una que no esté llena de problemas; la diferencia del sueño que tiene Usnavi y sus amigos es que para él su sueño es hacer cumplir el sueño de su difunto padre y tal vez eso le haga despedirse de quién lo apoya y ama durante mucho tiempo, dejar atrás al barrio que lo ha visto crecer y es donde deberá pensar que sueño alcanzar, si el propio de él o de otros.
"In The Heights" tells the story of "Usnavi de la Vega" who lives in Washington Heights, a Dominican neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City, he owns a bodega which he inherited from his parents who unfortunately are no longer with him, but that does not mean that he is a lonely man because at his side there is a large community of Latinos who love and support him, all with their "Sueñitos" where the important thing is to have a better life, one that is not full of problems; The difference between the dream that Usnavi and his friends have is that for him his dream is to fulfill the dream of his late father and maybe that will make him say goodbye to the one who supports and loves him for a long time, to leave behind the neighborhood that has seen him grow up and is where he will have to think about which dream to achieve, if his own or others'.
Está película es basada en una obra musical la cual tiene el mismo nombre, producida por Quiara Alegría Hudes y Lin-Manuel Miranda, ambos estuvieron muy ligados en esta versión cinematográfica y creo que eso siempre es importante cuando se tiene un proyecto como una obra teatral, libro, comic y se lleva a la gran pantalla porque de esta forma a pesar de que puedan existir cambios, siempre existe una fuerte presencia del material original. Para este film se decidió que la dirección debería venir con alguien con mucha experiencia dentro de este género, Jon M. Chu sin ninguna duda es un director que ha estado muy unido a lo que son este tipo de producciones, claro anteriores proyectos como las películas que dirigió para la franquicia de "Step Up" no se compara a la producción realizada en este film en particular, pero creo que la experiencia ayudó a la filmación de las muchas escenas musicales y de bailes en "In The Heights", lo otro es que a esta película ser muy enfocada en la comunidad latina, era justo que se pueda transmitir eso, la mayoría del cast es latino y era necesario que siempre estuviera presente eso, en este tema se ve también la experiencia del director que a pesar de tener un origen asiático, justamente dirigió un importante y exitoso film para la comunidad que represente como fue "Crazy Rich Asians"; con todo esto descrito no existe ninguna duda que su trabajo es muy bueno, hay muy buenas escenas musicales muy bien hechas y por eso creo que se ha ganado el reconocimiento de la crítica especializada.
La historia por momentos la puedo relacionar como un cuento de hadas, pero en realidad es una historia muy ligada a lo que es la comunidad latina de cierta clase social, una en la que cree en el trabajo, pero a la vez cree que puede tener mejores cosas y que no se aparta del buen camino para lograr ese cambio, esto me gustó mucho de este film ya que se enfoca en lo positivo de una gran comunidad, de gente buena que demuestra que haciendo el bien se puede obtener buenas cosas; me gustó que también demuestre la dificultad para obtener una mejor vida, del sacrificio que hacen los padres para que sus hijos tengan lo que ellos no tuvieron o no disfrutaron, eso lo relaciono mucho a como es mi familia y lo que han hecho mis padres por mí, esto es lo sin ninguna duda hizo que conectará con la historia y que pudiera disfrutarla porque es un film positivo que aunque enseñe y sume a esa imagen del latino alegre, que le guste el baile, que tenga una forma particular de hablar, creo que es algo muy bueno que enseñe a latinos trabajadores, que pensemos en ser mejores y que respetemos y amemos a nuestra comunidad, creo que eso debería existir siempre y más cuando se está en otro lugar.
This film is based on a musical play which has the same name, produced by Quiara Alegría Hudes and Lin-Manuel Miranda, both were very linked in this film version and I think that is always important when you have a project such as a play, book, comic and it is taken to the big screen because in this way even though there may be changes, there is always a strong presence of the original material. For this film it was decided that the direction should come with someone with a lot of experience within this genre, Jon M. Chu without any doubt is a director who has been very attached to what are this type of productions, of course previous projects like the films he directed for the franchise of "Step Up" does not compare to the production made in this particular film, but I think the experience helped the filming of the many musical scenes and dances in "In The Heights", the other thing is that this film is very focused on the Latino community, it was fair that it can transmit that, most of the cast is Latino and it was necessary that this was always present, in this issue is also seen the experience of the director that despite having an Asian origin, just directed an important and successful film for the community that represents as it was "Crazy Rich Asians"; With all this described there is no doubt that his work is very good, there are very good musical scenes very well done and that is why I think he has earned the recognition of the specialized critics.
The story at times I can relate it as a fairy tale, but in reality it is a story closely linked to what is the Latino community of a certain social class, one that believes in work, but at the same time believes that it can have better things and that it does not deviate from the good path to achieve that change, I really liked this film because it focuses on the positive of a great community, of good people who show that doing good can get good things; I liked that it also shows the difficulty to obtain a better life, the sacrifice that parents make for their children to have what they did not have or did not enjoy, I relate this to my family and what my parents have done for me, this is what undoubtedly made me connect with the story and enjoy it because it is a positive film that even though it teaches and adds to the image of the happy Latino, who likes to dance, who has a particular way of speaking, I think it is something very good that teaches hard working Latinos, that we think about being better and that we respect and love our community, I think that should always exist and even more so when you are in another place.
En la parte de las actuaciones, me gustaron porque varias se basan en los sueños de cada uno de sus personajes, por ejemplo el de Usnavi interpretado por Anthony Ramos, el cual es un hombre que está cerca de los 30 años de edad, tiene un negocio propio, gente que lo quiere, pero sabe que no es suficiente y su problema es que persigue sueños ajenos perdiendo los propios y tal vez perdiendo la oportunidad de otros de conseguir sus propios sueños, Ramos sabe interpretar la felicidad de vivir en un buen sitio y tambien la preocupación y tristeza a saber que tal vez se pierda cosas mejores, justamente una de las grandes pérdidas es no hacer una vida junto a Vanessa interpretada por Melissa Barrera, puede ser el personaje que más me ha gustado en este film, mujer independiente, decidida, feliz, trabajadora la cual tiene el sueño de tener un negocio propio enfocado en la moda, pero al fallar al alcanzar lo que más quiere hace que poco a poco pierda la esperanza de tener algo mejor; otros personajes como Nina y Abuela Rosario, son buenos personajes, el primero es interpretado por Leslie Grace y la segunda por Olga Merediz; Nina es el personaje en el cual muchas personas se pueden enfocar, es la considerada diferente y que puede traer orgullo a la comunidad, me gustó cómo es interpretada al comienzo del film, pero creo que su desarrollo final no es el mejor, pero igual creo que Grace interpreta muy bien lo que se quiere contar desde el punto de vista de este personaje, de la Abuela Rosario puede decir que en cualquier barrio podemos conseguir un personaje tal como este, alguien de quien aprender, respetar y tomarle una gran cariño, Olga transmite todo eso, es una buena actuación y no tengo duda de que es otro de los mejores personajes de este film.
In the performances, I liked them because several of them are based on the dreams of each of their characters, for example, Usnavi played by Anthony Ramos, which is a man who is close to 30 years old, he has his own business, people who love him, but he knows that it is not enough and his problem is that he pursues other people's dreams losing his own and perhaps losing the opportunity for others to achieve their own dreams, Ramos knows how to interpret the happiness of living in a good place and also the concern and sadness to know that maybe he will miss better things, precisely one of the great losses is not making a life with Vanessa played by Melissa Barrera, may be the character that I liked the most in this film, independent, determined, happy, hardworking woman who has the dream of having her own business focused on fashion, but failing to achieve what she wants most makes her slowly lose the hope of having something better; other characters like Nina and Abuela Rosario, are good characters, the first one is played by Leslie Grace and the second one by Olga Merediz; Nina is the character that many people can focus on, she is the one considered different and that can bring pride to the community, I liked how she is interpreted at the beginning of the film, but I think that her final development is not the best, but I still think that Grace interprets very well what is wanted to tell from the point of view of this character, of Abuela Rosario can say that in any neighborhood we can get a character like this, someone to learn from, respect and take a great affection, Olga conveys all that, it is a good performance and I have no doubt that it is another of the best characters in this film.
A pesar de que no veo musicales este pude disfrutarlo, la historia de sus personajes a pesar de sus diferentes puntos de vistas siempre está unido por querer tener una vida mejor, una en dónde se sientan importantes, que tengan esa sensación de ser responsables, de no responder a otros y claro, también sueñan de tener reconocimiento y ser tomado como ejemplo para futuras generaciones, está es una gran idea por un grupo de mujeres y hombres trabajadores siempre con ganas de superarse; esto es lo importante de este film en dónde te muestran lo bueno y lo malo de querer ser más, una lucha constante llena de obstáculos y todo está en la fuerza interna y la ayuda que brinden la familia y amigos para superar y alcanzar los sueñitos y es que está película es eso una historia real contada o mejor dicho cantada porque justamente la música y el baile le da un mejor toque, un toque latino, urbano y eso es otro punto positivo del film. Al ser un musical es justo que tuviera muchas escenas en donde sus protagonistas deban cantar y bailar y como dije anteriormente no me gustan mucho esas escenas, pero en este caso no es así porque las mejores escenas son de las muchas que son musicales en especial la del inició con el tema "In the Heights" o el tema enfocado en Nina, llamado "Breathe" o la canción de la Abuela Rosario, "Paciencia y Fe" (mi escena favorita) o la breve escena de Nina junto Benny con la canción "When the Sun Goes Down" y hasta la divertida "Piragua" cantada por el "Piragüero" interpretado por Lin-Manuel Miranda; es claro porque este film ha gustado, lamentablemente la poca promoción, no tener actores famosos (lo son ahora) y el estreno simultáneo en streaming no acompañó a qué tuviera un éxito en taquilla, pero eso no evita de que sea un buen film.
Even though I don't see musicals I was able to enjoy it, the story of its characters despite their different points of view is always united by wanting to have a better life, one where they feel important, they have that feeling of being responsible, of not answering to others and of course, they also dream of having recognition and being taken as an example for future generations, this is a great idea by a group of hardworking women and men always wanting to improve themselves; This is the important thing about this film where they show you the good and the bad of wanting to be more, a constant struggle full of obstacles and everything is in the inner strength and the help that family and friends provide to overcome and achieve the dreams and this film is that a true story told or rather sung because the music and dance gives it a better touch, a Latin, urban touch and that is another positive point of the film. Being a musical it is fair that had many scenes where its protagonists must sing and dance and as I said before I do not like those scenes, but in this case it is not so because the best scenes are of the many that are musical especially the one at the beginning with the theme "In the Heights" or the theme focused on Nina, called "Breathe" or the song of Abuela Rosario, "Paciencia y Fe" (my favorite scene) or the brief scene of Nina together with Benny with the song "When the Sun Goes Down" and even the funny "Piragua" sung by the "Piragüero" interpreted by Lin-Manuel Miranda; it is clear why this film has been liked, unfortunately the little promotion, not having famous actors (they are now) and the simultaneous release in streaming did not help it to be a success at the box office, but that does not prevent it from being a good film.
