La existencia de historias, sean en un film o serie basada en criminales, es algo que la mayoría de veces me atrae de ver; producciones sobre robos es algo que siempre he creído que existe un gran número de factores que proveen diversión, entretenimiento y es que así como otros géneros, el uso de los clichés será algo fundamental para el éxito o no de estos proyectos. Netflix es quien en los últimos años han apoyado mucho a este tipo de historias en dónde se basan en llevar a cabo el plan perfecto y realizar un gran robo, películas como "Army of the Dead", "Army of the Thieves" o por nombrar la famosa serie española "La Casa de Papel" son producciones originales o no en dónde se explora el tema de los robos y no son las únicas, ya que hay muchas más como la serie (o miniserie) que hago reseña en esta oportunidad.
The existence of stories, whether in a film or series based on criminals, is something that most of the time attracts me to see; productions about robberies is something that I have always believed that there are a number of factors that provide fun, entertainment and is that as well as other genres, the use of clichés will be something fundamental to the success or not of these projects. Netflix is who in recent years have been very supportive of this type of stories where they are based on carrying out the perfect plan and make a great robbery, movies like "Army of the Dead", "Army of the Thieves" or to name the famous Spanish series "La Casa de Papel" are original productions or not where the theme of theft is explored and they are not the only ones, as there are many more like the series (or miniseries) that I review in this opportunity.
El pasado año se me hizo difícil ver series producidas por TV y de servicio streaming; en realidad vi muy pocas y por eso en este nuevo año quiero cambiar eso y darle oportunidad a historias que posiblemente sean buenas; sé que empezar con una producción original de Netflix es difícil por las decisiones que tienen después de estrenar muchas otras series y es que la mayoría que vieron la luz en el pasado año terminaron siendo canceladas, pero como en este año tengo una nueva resolución pensé que era mejor arriesgarme a ver historias que me pueda gustar; una de esas producciones que me llamó la atención fue "Kaleidoscope", una serie que relata cómo un grupo de criminales se reúnen para llevar a cabo un robo; una historia simple vista en un gran número de oportunidades, pero está tiene la particularidad de que no existe un orden en específico para ver sus ocho episodios que la conforman y que solamente existe una regla y esa es ver el episodio llamado "WHITE" de último.
Last year it was difficult for me to watch series produced by TV and streaming service; actually I saw very few and that's why in this new year I want to change that and give a chance to stories that are possibly good; I know that starting with a Netflix original production is difficult because of the decisions they have after releasing many other series and most that saw the light in the past year ended up being canceled, but as this year I have a new resolution I thought it was better to risk seeing stories that I might like; one of those productions that caught my attention was "Kaleidoscope ", a series that tells how a group of criminals get together to carry out a robbery; a simple story seen in a great number of opportunities, but this one has the particularity that there is no specific order to watch its eight episodes and there is only one rule and that is to watch the episode called "WHITE" last.
Esta serie fue creada por el escritor Eric Garcia, quien ha escrito dos novelas que sirvieron para influenciar a dos films, una es "Matchstick Men" y la otra "The Repossession Mambo" también conocido como "Repo Man"; en esta oportunidad y como dije anteriormente, creó una historia que se puede ver de cualquier manera y eso para muchas personas es algo original; podemos ver el pasado, presente y futuro de estos personajes y así tener un mejor conocimiento del porqué son en el presente y de cómo se comportarán en el futuro y justamente eso fue lo que me atrajo de la historia, quería ver algo que me hiciera pensar, que me mantuviera en la intriga, el suspenso de saber que sucedió en un momento en específico y desencadenó todo lo que veremos en algunos episodios; ahora una cosa es pensarlo, escribirlo, planearlo y otra es llevar a cabo y en mi opinión el resultado final no fue tan perfecto como esperaba.
This series was created by the writer Eric Garcia, who has written two novels that served to influence two films, one is "Matchstick Men" and the other "The Repossession Mambo" also known as "Repo Man"; in this opportunity and as I said before, he created a story that can be seen in any way and that for many people is something original; we can see the past, present and future of these characters and thus have a better understanding of why they are in the present and how they will behave in the future and that's exactly what attracted me to the story, I wanted to see something that made me think, that kept me in the intrigue, the suspense of knowing what happened at a specific time and triggered everything we will see in some episodes; now one thing is to think it, write it, plan it and another is to carry it out and in my opinion the end result was not as perfect as I expected.
Mi problema con esta serie es lo indefinido de su relato; principalmente se comporta como la típica historia sobre un grupo de criminales y el plan para realizar un arriesgado robo; cumple con el cliché del motivo del robo, el reclutamiento del grupo y por supuesto la diversidad entre quienes conforman dicho grupo; esto es algo que se ejecuta bien en un específico episodio, pero en otros se pierde interés porque no son desarrollados cómo tal aunque hay un factor que influye en varios de estos personajes y eso es la interpretación de los actores la cual en momentos es aburrida, sobreactuada y por eso se me hizo muy difícil conectar con varios de estos personajes y justamente por eso apunto el buen trabajo de Giancarlo Esposito como "Ray Vernon" y Paz Vega como "Ava Mercer", los cuales son los que más disfruté. Lamentablemente, estas producciones pierden la oportunidad de dejar una huella o marca con la creación de personajes que creen algo de admiración y al contener a los actores que interpretan a personajes simples hace que afecten a la historia; eso me hace pensar que posiblemente si llega a haber una segunda temporada, entonces podrá haber una posible mejora en esos personajes que no cumplieron las expectativas.
My problem with this series is the indefinite nature of its story; it mainly behaves as the typical story about a group of criminals and the plan to carry out a risky robbery; it complies with the cliché of the motive of the robbery, the recruitment of the group and of course the diversity among those who make up the group; This is something that is well executed in a specific episode, but in others it loses interest because they are not developed as such although there is a factor that influences several of these characters and that is the interpretation of the actors which at times is boring, overacted and therefore I found it very difficult to connect with several of these characters and that is precisely why I point out the good work of Giancarlo Esposito as "Ray Vernon" and Paz Vega as "Ava Mercer", which are the ones I enjoyed the most. Unfortunately, these productions miss the opportunity to leave an imprint or mark with the creation of characters that create something to admire and by containing the actors playing simple characters makes them affect the story; that makes me think that possibly if there comes to be a second season, then there may be a possible improvement in those characters that did not meet the expectations.
No puedo decir que tenía grandes expectativas con esta serie, pero mínimo esperaba entretenerme y lamentablemente se me hizo difícil de ver algunos episodios, aunque pude disfrutar otros dónde el drama de la historia de su protagonista se me hizo algo muy bien hecho y es que por momentos, la interpretación de Esposito es convincente porque tiene el temple y la calma de un líder, pero también la preocupación de alguien que debe cuidar a quienes más ama; en eso vi genial la historia y creo que debió dar un mejor protagonismo a ese personaje, hacerlo más meticuloso, misteriosos y despiadado y es aquí donde digo que está serie es regular porque cuando tengo ese pensamiento de que "Debió ser mejor", "Este personaje debió ser de esta manera" es cuando creo que faltó algo más y creanme, a Kaleidoscope le faltó mucho para ser algo sumamente bueno. Ahora habrá que esperar si tiene o no la suerte de ser renovada y a pesar de las críticas mixtas que ha recibido y que en lo personal no cumplió las pocas expectativas que tengo, debo decir que si vería una segunda temporada, una en dónde el hecho de no ser una historia lineal se haga mejor y así crear un gran misterio en una historia de criminales.
I can't say that I had great expectations with this series, but at least I expected to be entertained and unfortunately it was difficult to watch some episodes, although I could enjoy others where the drama of the story of its protagonist was very well done and at times, the interpretation of Esposito is convincing because he has the temper and calm of a leader, but also the concern of someone who must take care of those he loves the most; In that I saw the story great and I think it should have given a better role to that character, make him more meticulous, mysterious and ruthless and this is where I say that this series is regular because when I have that thought that "It should have been better", "This character should have been this way" is when I think that something else was missing and believe me, Kaleidoscope lacked a lot to be something extremely good. Now we will have to wait whether or not it has the luck to be renewed and despite the mixed reviews it has received and that personally did not meet the few expectations I have, I must say that if I would see a second season, one where the fact of not being a linear story is made better and thus create a great mystery in a story of criminals.
