No hay duda que en el mundo del entretenimiento existen un gran número de historias de terror que justamente captan la atención de un gran número de personas; estás historias convierten a viles asesinos y sobrevivientes en iconos que son admirados de diferentes maneras; en especial los personajes que crean terror porque se convierten en una marca, algo imposible de no pasar desapercibido y es que el éxito de este tipo de historias depende del impacto que cause al que considero como el verdadero protagonista de la historia; ahora todo lo que he descrito es sobre films en los cuales veremos personajes ficticios, pero ¿Qué pasa cuando en el mundo real existen este tipo de personas con tanta maldad? ¿Se debe admirar por lo que se convirtió? ¿Se debe admirar por lo que nos enseñan los medios? Estás preguntas son hechas en la nueva miniserie de Netflix que relata la historia de uno de los asesinos en serie de EEUU.
There is no doubt that in the world of entertainment there are a large number of horror stories that rightly capture the attention of a large number of people; these stories turn vile murderers and survivors into icons that are admired in different ways; especially the characters that create terror because they become a brand, something impossible not to go unnoticed and is that the success of such stories depends on the impact caused by what I consider as the real protagonist of the story; now everything I have described is about films in which we will see fictional characters, but what happens when in the real world there are such people with so much evil? Should we admire them for what they became? Should we admire them for what the media teaches us? These questions are asked in the new Netflix miniseries that tells the story of one of America's serial killers.
A pesar de haber visto varias películas de terror, en especial las slasher y ver thrillers en dónde existe casos en dónde se deba atrapar a asesinos en serie, y es que las únicas producciones que relatan historias reales sobre asesinos seriales en los Estados Unidos son las realizadas por Netflix; series como "Mindhunter" de David Fincher o el documental sobre "John Wayne Gacy" eran las únicas que había visto antes de la miniserie sobre "Jeffrey Dahmer" creada por Ryan Murphy. Creo que Dahmer y "Ted Bundy" deben ser los asesinos a los cuales se le ha hecho diferentes versiones cinematográficas, que no he visto ninguna de las películas, documentales y series de estos dos terroríficos asesinos, pero decidí dar oportunidad porque quería saber que ofrecía esta historia en dónde parece que existía una excelente producción, relato y actuación por todas las personas que eran parte de esta nueva miniserie de Netflix. En "Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story" tal como lo dice el extenso título, veremos toda la historia de conocido como "Milwaukee Cannibal" o "The Milwaukee Monster"; no hay duda de que sin ver un minuto de la historia y tan solo leer cualquier información sobre Jeffrey, podemos ver el impacto que tuvo en todo un país causa a cada horrible asesinato que cometió, pero hay otras historias que contar, de personas que tuvieron gran culpa de todo lo ocurrido y de las víctimas que hasta el día de hoy no obtienen una verdadera y completa justicia.
Despite having seen several horror movies, especially slasher movies and thrillers where there are cases where serial killers must be caught, and the only productions that tell true stories about serial killers in the United States are those made by Netflix; series like "Mindhunter" by David Fincher or the documentary about "John Wayne Gacy" were the only ones I had seen before the miniseries about "Jeffrey Dahmer" created by Ryan Murphy. I think that Dahmer and "Ted Bundy" must be the killers to which different movie versions have been made, that I have not seen any of the movies, documentaries and series of these two terrifying killers, but I decided to give it a chance because I wanted to know what this story offered where it seems that there was an excellent production, storytelling and acting by all the people who were part of this new Netflix miniseries. In "Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story" as the extensive title says, we will see the whole story of the man known as "Milwaukee Cannibal" or "The Milwaukee Monster"; there is no doubt that without seeing a minute of the story and just reading any information about Jeffrey, we can see the impact he had on an entire country because of each horrible murder he committed, but there are other stories to tell, of people who were greatly to blame for everything that happened and of the victims who to this day do not get a true and complete justice.
Al momento del estreno de esta miniserie hubo personas que se preguntaron ¿Por qué nuevamente hacer otra producción sobre un asesino serial? o ¿Por qué exponer nuevamente a la familia de las víctimas a revivir el dolor? Pienso que todas estas producciones de alguna manera explotan y exponen diferentes situaciones que no se manejaron de la mejor manera hace muchos años y que hasta el día de hoy, a muy pocas se les hace frente de una manera diferente, como por ejemplo la necesidad de realizar una producción cinematográfica o televisiva de algún hecho traumático y con eso, sumo el de buscar una motivación o dar un cierre satisfactorio, uno en dónde de alguna forma se muestre justicia; estoy seguro de que en esta serie "Dahmer - Monster" cumple con lo antes descrito, ya que explora la historia desde tres puntos de vista, una del asesino, otra de los padres, de las víctimas y sus familiares; esto es algo que personalmente me gustó porque tenemos la posibilidad de ver cómo fue el comportamiento de una persona que hizo cosas atroces y de como fue la relación con sus padres y sus víctimas, sus fantasías, deseos, llegar a cumplirlas y después evolucionar para obtener una mejor satisfacción; esto me sorprendió y a la vez me causó repulsión porque lo que muestra está historia con respecto Jeffrey es semejanza y diferencia con cualquier persona en el mundo, ya que pienso que cada quien tiene expectativas de encontrar algo en ser bueno, aprender a mejorarlo, ser mejor y después evolucionar; estoy seguro de que toda persona piensa en eso, en un motivo de vida y al ver cómo este personaje evoluciona en su locura me hizo pensar, me sorprende lo que puede llegar alguien si en su mente encuentra normalidad en la maldad y que cualquiera sin importar que puede ser una víctima en potencia.
At the time of the premiere of this miniseries there were people who wondered why again make another production about a serial killer? or why expose again the family of the victims to relive the pain? I think that all these productions somehow exploit and expose different situations that were not handled in the best way many years ago and that to this day, very few are faced in a different way, such as the need to make a film or television production of a traumatic event and with that, I add the need to find a motivation or give a satisfactory closure, one where somehow justice is shown; I am sure that in this series "Dahmer - Monster" fulfills the above described, since it explores the story from three points of view, one of the murderer, the other of the parents, the victims and their families; This is something that I personally liked because we have the possibility to see how was the behavior of a person who did atrocious things and how was the relationship with his parents and his victims, his fantasies, desires, get to fulfill them and then evolve to obtain a better satisfaction; this surprised me and at the same time caused me repulsion because what this story shows with respect to Jeffrey is similarity and difference with any person in the world, since I think that everyone has expectations to find something in being good, learn to improve it, be better and then evolve; I am sure that every person thinks about that, in a reason for life and seeing how this character evolves in his madness made me think, I am surprised what someone can get if in his mind finds normality in evil and that anyone regardless of that can be a potential victim.
Lo referente al desarrollo de esta historia mostrando la evolución en diferentes momentos de la vida de Jeffrey, junto a la relación de sus familiares que nunca pudieron ayudarlo por no enfrentar el verdadero problema y que para ser sincero, lo impulsaron a convertirse en un mejor depredador fue lo otro que me gustó; anteriormente no me gusta todo el asunto de profundizar en el motivo de un asesino, pero está no es una historia ficticia, está es una miniserie basada en hechos reales y es necesario que se profundice en la historia, que exista una explicación no para crear una empatía hacia el asesino la cual es imposible, sino para descubrir de que nadie hizo realmente algo que pudiera evitar de que está persona cometiera tan viles crímenes. Sé que Ryan Murphy junto a todo el equipo de directores y guionista tuvieron la gran idea de mostrar diferentes líneas en el tiempo para relatar la historia y no hacer predecible algo que es de conocimiento de muchos y que tal como dije con anterioridad tiene un gran número de producciones; esto ayuda a estar pendiente de la historia, ha saber cuándo y como ocurrieron varios asesinatos y saber de sus víctimas y de sus familias, pero también nos da el cómo su padre y abuela tuvieron que lidiar con este grave problema y como consiente o inconscientemente decidieron mirar hacia otro lado; esto crea el debate de como un hijo y nieto tiene todo para ser algo muy grave y cuando sucede, entonces no hay que mirar a otros para saber quién es el verdadero culpable.
The development of this story showing the evolution in different moments of Jeffrey's life, together with the relationship of his relatives who could never help him for not facing the real problem and that to be honest, for me, pushed him to become a better predator was the other thing I liked; previously I don't like the whole thing about delving into the motive of a killer, but this is not a fictional story, this is a miniseries based on real events and there needs to be a deeper story, an explanation not to create empathy for the killer which is impossible, but to find out that no one really did anything that could prevent this person from committing such vile crimes. I know that Ryan Murphy along with the whole team of directors and screenwriter had the great idea to show different timelines to tell the story and not make predictable something that is known to many and that as I said before has a large number of productions; this helps to be aware of the story, to know when and how several murders happened and to know about their victims and their families, but also gives us how his father and grandmother had to deal with this serious problem and how consciously or unconsciously decided to look the other way; this creates the debate of how a son and grandson has everything to be something very serious and when it happens, then you do not have to look at others to know who is the real culprit.
Las actuaciones son buenas, no las mejores, pero si buenas; Evan Peters quien interpreta a "Jeffrey Dahmer" se esfuerza para mostrar un gran parecido físico con este asesino; me gustaría decir que su tono de voz o su actuación es igual a quien interpreta y al haber una entrevista de Jeffrey después de su arresto decidí el verla para poder entender que tan profundo fue el trabajo de Peters y como dije su aspecto es perfecto, su actitud calmada, de controlar lo que quiera, de hacer dudar si dice la verdad es algo que se nota y puedo decir que este actor preparó muy bien su papel como uno de los asesinos más crueles de USA. Sobre las demás actuaciones puedo referirme tanto a Richard Jenkins y Niecy Nash quienes interpretan a "Lionel Dahmer", padre de Jeffrey y "Glenda Cleveland", vecina de Jeffrey; ambos tienen protagonismo en la historia en dónde uno debió hacer más para detener a su hijo y la otra nunca fue escuchada a pesar de hacer todo lo posible para detener a un asesino; no hay duda que los dos representan diferentes caminos en esta historia aunque pienso que Glenda es otra grave víctima de Jeffrey, en cambio, el padre de Jeffrey no, nunca fue víctima de los pecados de su hijo, sí de la vergüenza de que su hijo sea un asesino, pero nunca sintió el dolor de las víctimas; ambos actores con sus trabajos pueden crear un debate sobre que pudieron hacer para detener todo lo que ocurría y en eso creo que su actuación es aceptable; son importantes para el relato porque en ellos está el otro punto de vista que debemos ver en esta historia.
The performances are good, not the best, but good; Evan Peters who plays "Jeffrey Dahmer" does his best to show a great physical resemblance to this murderer; I would like to say that his tone of voice or his acting is the same as the one he plays and since there was an interview of Jeffrey after his arrest I decided to watch it to understand how deep was the work of Peters and as I said his look is perfect, his calm attitude, to control what he wants, to make doubt if he tells the truth is something that is noticeable and I can say that this actor prepared very well his role as one of the cruelest murderers in the USA. About the other performances I can refer to both Richard Jenkins and Niecy Nash who play "Lionel Dahmer", Jeffrey's father and "Glenda Cleveland", Jeffrey's neighbor; both have protagonism in the story where one should have done more to stop his son and the other was never listened despite doing everything possible to stop a murderer; there is no doubt that the two represent different paths in this story although I think Glenda is another serious victim of Jeffrey, on the other hand, Jeffrey's father is not, he was never a victim of his son's sins, yes of the shame of his son being a murderer, but he never felt the pain of the victims; both actors with their works can create a debate about what they could have done to stop everything that was happening and in that I think their performance is acceptable; they are important for the story because in them is the other point of view that we must see in this story.
He leído algunas opiniones negativas sobre Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story; la principal es lo innecesaria que es nuevamente una producción sobre este asesino que parece que nuevamente glorifica estos horribles sucesos que se llevaron a cabo hace mucho tiempo; personalmente pienso que se pudo enfocar en las historias de las víctimas, hombres de raza negra en su mayoría, gays, de un estatus social de clase media o pobre, fáciles de ser víctimas por primero querer divertirse con un encuentro casual o por querer obtener dinero de "manera fácil"; enfocarse en ellos en que los llevó a diferentes lugares para convertirse en víctimas pudo ser más satisfactorio que solo explorar una y otra vez la vida de un asesino buscando una respuesta del porqué cometió tan viles crímenes y es que aquí encuentro una disyuntiva porque aprecio que esta historia tenga diferentes puntos de vista, pero pienso que no es bien desarrollado y hace la serie extensa, varios episodios son muy largos, es muy lenta y por momentos se me hizo difícil de seguir, por eso no considero que sea perfecta a pesar de muchas escenas perturbadoras e impactantes que justifica la crítica sobre glorificar las muertes y lo otro que no me gusta es que extrañamente crea una crítica sobre el manejo de la noticia por parte de medios de comunicación o del mundo del entretenimiento a mediados de los 90' como si en esta época no exista el morbo por descubrir más sobre hechos terroríficos y pienso que con eso la serie trata de criticarse a sí misma. Hubo cosas que me gustó de ver y esa fue la crítica al sistema de como fue un importante factor en los muchos asesinatos, me sorprende que los lugares en donde ocurrieron cada una de las muertes, era sitios donde Jeffrey sabía que pudiera ser beneficiado por quién es y eso demuestra lo peligroso que era, como eligió a sus víctimas y todo lo que hizo para desaparecer a cada uno de ellos; siempre protegido por un sistema que no lo ve como una amenaza y sin ninguna duda eso lo benefició y lo empujó a hacer todo lo que hizo; creo que por eso recomendaría el ver esta miniserie, para que otras personas vean como mucho tiempo después exista un mismo patrón en dónde se sigue beneficiando a un grupo de psicópatas por el hecho de no ser considerados como una amenaza y que las víctimas y sus familiares nunca obtienen una verdadera justicia.
I have read many negative reviews about Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story; the main one is how unnecessary it is again a production about this killer that seems to again glorify these horrible events that took place a long time ago; personally I think it could have focused on the stories of the victims, mostly black men, gay, of a middle class or poor social status, easy to be victims for first wanting to have fun with a casual encounter or wanting to get money the "easy way"; focusing on them in what led them to different places to become victims could be more satisfying than just exploring again and again the life of a murderer looking for an answer of why he committed such vile crimes and here I find a dilemma because I appreciate that this story has different points of view, but I think it is not well developed and makes the series long, several episodes are very long, it is very slow and at times it was difficult to follow, that's why I don't consider it perfect despite many disturbing and shocking scenes that justify the criticism about glorifying the deaths and the other thing I don't like is that it strangely creates a criticism about the handling of the news by the media or the entertainment world in the mid 90's as if in this era there is no morbid curiosity to discover more about terrifying facts and I think that with that the series tries to criticize itself. There were things that I liked to see and that was the criticism of the system of how it was an important factor in the many murders, it surprises me that the places where each of the deaths occurred, were places where Jeffrey knew he could be benefited by who he is and that shows how dangerous he was, how he chose his victims and everything he did to disappear each one of them; always protected by a system that does not see him as a threat and without any doubt that benefited him and pushed him to do everything he did; I think that is why I would recommend watching this miniseries, for other people to see how long after there is the same pattern where a group of psychopaths continues to benefit from the fact that they are not considered a threat and that the victims and their families never get real justice.
