Netflix has become a great help for the time we are living and the large number of releases they have for this year has taken a great relevance for good or bad, many productions have been released, movies and series, but it has been the movies that have had a good and bad reception, the critics and the general public has focused on three of its releases which are based on comics, first was "Extraction" based on the comic book "Ciudad", then came "The Last Days of American Crime" based on the comic book of the same name and now "The Old Guard", the first two films had a very different reception, although both criticized by the press, one was well received by the public in contrast the other is considered one of the worst films made so far this year, that's why at the time of the release of this last film I personally had few expectations.
"The Old Guard" is a very entertaining film, not the best made, but I think it fulfills in being an "origin" film because it has good characters, very good action scenes and the potential to be a franchise, but it must be said that this must be one of the least original stories I've seen, I think that since "Den of Thieves" (2018), I haven't seen a film that is so unoriginal and although I am an advocate that in the world of cinema it is very difficult to be original, I think that there are times when screenwriters must do what is necessary to create stories that are not so similar to others.
This film is the first action film made by director and screenwriter Gina Prince-Bythewood, both her work as a director and screenwriter has been focused on romantic dramas and comedies, but I think she has taken an excellent opportunity by directing a film that does not have a high budget, This makes it easy for you to focus on trying to tell a story and when it comes to action scenes, you can do the necessary shots to highlight your top star, Charlize Theron, it's a smart way to show a good character with good fights and more when most scenes occur in closed sets.
The performances are good, most of the characters are excellent, especially what makes up the group of the four and then five immortals, each actor does a good job playing these people with their clichés to be recognized in the group, the strong, the sensitive, the comic, the new and the leader, This last character is the one who plays most of the story, "Andromache of Scythia/Andy" played by Charlize Theron, she focuses on how living so long she thinks there is nothing that motivates her to keep leading her team because she does not see any change in the world. I think her previous works in "Æon Flux", "Mad Max: Fury Road " and "Atomic Blonde" make it much easier to play this character that has the characteristics of being strong, solitary and a great leader.
Now I must speak what I did not like about this film and that is the little original of its history, while watching this film despite its characters, action scenes and how entertaining it is, I kept thinking many things I had seen in the film "Highlander" (1986), this is an action and fantasy story starring two immortal characters one much older than the other and precisely the most experienced will have to teach everything he knows to the one who has recently discovered his power, these immortals may face battles but they must know that there is a way to die and that every time one of them is "born" or is close, the others who are like him will be able to perceive it and at the end or in the course of his eternal life he will be able to help humanity anonymously, as you see all the above written is the basis of the story of "The Old Guard ", they may try to change one or other things, but in the end there is very little change between the two stories and that is something I did not like in this film.
I've read many critics, most of them are about the poor script made by the creator of this comic book, Greg Rucka, personally I would like to read the original material to compare both stories and although I know that there are changes it's not bad to remember that the film is based on the comic book and not a copy, that's why this scriptwriter took many liberties so that his creation could work in a two hour film and because of what has happened in the great acceptance it has had, It seems that he found the formula to make his work a success and for sure, as I said before, he will be able to create a franchise because his story has the necessary material to achieve it. I only hope that it will be original in everything that comes from now on and that the future sequels will be better than this first part.

Hola Hivers, les traigo la reseña de la nueva película de Netflix que siguen en este 2020 aferrados a estrenar películas basadas en comics.
Netflix se ha vuelto una gran ayuda para la época que estamos viviendo y la gran cantidad de estrenos que tienen para este año ha tomado una gran relevancia tanto para bien o para mal, muchas producciones han sido estrenadas, películas y series, pero justamente han sido las películas las que han tenido un recibimiento tanto bueno como malo, la crítica especializada y el público en general se ha enfocado en tres de sus estrenos los cuales son basados en cómics, primero fue "Extraction" basada en el comic "Ciudad", después vino "The Last Days of American Crime" basado en el comic del mismo nombre y ahora "The Old Guard", las dos primeras películas tuvieron un recibimiento muy diferente, aunque ambas criticadas por la prensa, una solo fue bien recibida por el público en cambio la otra es considerada como una de las peores películas hechas en lo que va de año, es por eso que al momento del estreno de esta última personalmente tenía pocas expectativas.
"The Old Guard" es una película muy entretenida, no es la mejor hecha, pero creo que cumple en ser una película de "orígenes", tiene buenos personajes, muy buenas escenas de acción y el potencial para ser una franquicia, pero hay que decir que este debe ser una de las historias menos originales que he visto, creo que desde "Den of Thieves" (2018), no veía una película que fuera tan poco original y aunque soy defensor de que en el mundo del cine es muy difícil ser original, creo que hay veces que los guionistas deben hacer lo necesario para crear historias que no sean tan parecidas a otras.
Este film es el primer film de acción hecho por la directora y guionista Gina Prince-Bythewood, tanto su trabajo como directora y guionista ha estado enfocado en dramas y comedias románticas, pero creo que ha tomado una excelente oportunidad al dirigir una película que no tiene un alto presupuesto, esto le hace sencillo su trabajo en enfocarse en tratar de contar un historia y cuando toca realizar las escenas de acción, puede hacer las tomas necesarias para resaltar a su máxima estrella, Charlize Theron, es una inteligente forma de mostrar a un buen personaje con buenas peleas y más cuando la mayoría de escenas ocurren en sets cerrados.
Las actuaciones son buenas, la mayoría de los personajes son excelentes, en especial lo que conforman al grupo de los cuatro y después cinco inmortales, cada actor hace un buen trabajo interpretando a estos personas con sus clichés para ser reconocidos en el grupo, el fuerte, el sensible, el cómico, la nueva y la líder, justamente en este último personaje recae la mayor parte de la historia, ese personaje es "Andromache of Scythia/Andy" interpretado por Charlize Theron, en ella se enfoca de como por vivir tanto tiempo piensa que no hay nada que la motive a seguir liderando a su equipo porque no ve ningún cambio en el mundo. creo que sus anteriores trabajos tanto en "Æon Flux", "Mad Max: Fury Road" y "Atomic Blonde" hace que sea mucho más fácil interpretar a este personaje que tiene como características ser fuerte, solitaria y gran líder.
Ahora debo hablar lo que no me gusto de este film y eso es lo poco original de su historia, mientras veía esta película a pesar de sus personajes, escenas de acción y lo entretenida que es, no dejaba de pensar muchas cosas las había visto en el film "Highlander" (1986), recordemos que esta historia de acción y fantasía está protagonizada por dos personajes inmortales uno mucho mayor que el otro y justamente el más experimentado deberá enseñar todo lo que sabe al que recientemente ha descubierto su poder, estos inmortales podrán enfrentar batallas pero deben saber que existe una forma de morir y que cada vez que uno de ellos "nace" o está cerca, los demás que son como él podrán percibirlo y al final o en el transcurso de su eterna vida podrá ayudar a la humanidad de forma anónima, como ven todo lo antes escrito es base de la historia de "The Old Guard", podrán tratar de cambiar una u otras cosas, pero al final es muy poco el cambio entre ambas historias y eso es algo que no me gustó de este film.
He leído muchas críticas, la mayoría son sobre el pobre guion realizado justamente por el creador de este comic, Greg Rucka, en lo personal me gustaría leer el material de origen para comparar ambas historias y aunque sé que hay cambios no es malo recordar que el film es basado en el comic y no una copia, es por eso que este guionista se tomó muchas libertades para que su creación pudiera funcionar en un film de dos horas y por lo que ha sucedido en la gran aceptación que ha tenido, parece que dio con la fórmula para que su trabajo fuera un éxito y de seguro como ya dije anteriormente podrá crear una franquicia porque su historia tiene el material necesario para lograrlo solo espero que sea original en todo lo que venga de ahora en adelante y que las futuras secuelas sean mejores que esta primera parte.
