Hace dos años pude ver un buen film de fantasía y que relataba una historia de la fuerte amistad dos niñas de mundos diferentes, pero que se deberán unir para salvar todo lo que ellas aman; está historia se llama "Wolfwalkers"; un film producido por "Cartoon Saloon" la cual es un estudio de filmación irlandés que se encarga más que nada de crear films cortos y películas para la TV, pero en varios años han creado películas las cuales obtuvieron un gran reconocimiento y hasta recibieron nominaciones a los grandes premios del cine y es por eso que desde el anuncio del estreno en Netflix de la película a la cual hago reseña, decidí verla porque estaba convencido de que disfrutaría de una buena historia.

Two years ago I was able to see a good fantasy film that told a story of a strong friendship between two girls from different worlds, but who must unite to save everything they love; this story is called "Wolfwalkers"; a film produced by "Cartoon Saloon" which is an Irish film studio that is mostly responsible for creating short films and films for TV, but in several years they have created films which obtained great recognition and even received nominations for major film awards and that is why since the announcement of the premiere on Netflix of the film which I review, I decided to watch it because I was convinced that I would enjoy a good story.
Hace días por fin vi "My Father's Dragon" del cual me había creado ciertas expectativas por las razones antes descritas y como en otras oportunidades decidí no leer una completa sinopsis ni mucho menos ver el trailer para sí no arruinar mi experiencia. En este film veremos la historia de "Elmer", un niño que junto a su madre "Dela" tenían una pequeña, pero concurrida tienda en un pequeño pueblo lejos de la gran ciudad, pero al pasar algún tiempo, diferentes problemas aparecen y deberán dejar su tranquila vida y dirigirse hacia una ciudad en dónde el color gris prevalece; en ese lugar los problemas y preocupaciones que no existían, aparecen para crear sentimientos que Elmer no había experimentado y eso lo hace huir hasta encontrar a amigos que le darán la oportunidad de ser parte de una aventura en dónde conocerá a Boris quien tiene una misión y obligación de ser un salvador, un héroe y estará en ellos unirse dependiendo de sus necesidades para crecer, hacerse fuertes y así no solo salvar quienes los necesiten sino ayudarse así mismos.
A few days ago I finally saw "My Father's Dragon " of which I had created certain expectations for the reasons described above and as in other opportunities I decided not to read a complete synopsis nor much less watch the trailer so as not to ruin my experience. In this film we will see the story of "Elmer", a boy who with his mother "Dela" had a small but busy store in a small town far from the big city, but after some time, different problems appear and they must leave their quiet life and go to a city where the gray color prevails; In that place the problems and worries that did not exist, appear to create feelings that Elmer had not experienced and that makes him flee to find friends who will give him the opportunity to be part of an adventure where he will meet Boris who has a mission and obligation to be a savior, a hero and it will be in them to join depending on their needs to grow, become strong and thus not only save those who need them but also help themselves.
Este film es basado en una novela escrita en, 1948 por Ruth Stiles Gannett y que en su segunda versión fílmica fue dirigida por Nora Twomey, quien en el 2017 dirigió "The Breadwinner", film que recibió varias nominaciones como por ejemplo la de Mejor Película Animada en la nonagésima edición de los Premios de la Academia. En esta oportunidad regresa la dirección para crear un mundo sencillo que ayude al enfoque de sus personajes y es que así como ocurre con otras producciones de Cartoon Saloon, cada diseño de los lugares donde se lleva a cabo la historia son un calor ejemplo de como seguramente se ve en los libros y en mi opinión es una gran virtud por parte no solo de esta directora sino de todo un equipo de animación y es que siempre he dicho que los libros hacen que nuestra imaginación florezca, que crezca y cuando vemos a estos films basados en libros pienso que posiblemente esto que vemos en el film sea lo que padres y niños se imaginan al leer tan maravillosa historia.
El guion fue escrito por Meg LeFauve quien ha escrito excelentes guiones de películas como "Inside Out" (la secuela también), "The Good Dinosaur" y ha recibido reconocimiento de crear historias que influyen en guiones en otros films cómo son "Captain Marvel" y "Onward"; en esta oportunidad de una historia creada por ella junto a John Morgan y basada en un libro escrito hace más de 70 años vemos cómo la relación entre una madre y su hijo al enfrentar problemas puede afectar la relación entre ambos; debo decir que personalmente me sentí identificado con la historia porque mi madre hizo lo imposible para que mis hermanos y yo nunca nos faltará nada, pero al mismo tiempo nosotros entendíamos la situación y siempre fuimos en nuestra manera un apoyo hacia ella y mi padre; esto me fascina de la historia en dónde vemos cómo la vida puede dar un vuelco repentino y cambiar todo obligando a crecer o enfrentar responsabilidades y que a pesar de ser una historia llena de fantasía, creo que demuestra un gran grado de realidad desde los relatos de las historias de sus muchos personajes; en mi opinión el guion es fantástico.
This film is based on a novel written in, 1948 by Ruth Stiles Gannett and that in its second film version was directed by Nora Twomey, who in 2017 directed "The Breadwinner", a film that received several nominations such as Best Animated Feature at the ninetieth edition of the Academy Awards. In this opportunity she returns the direction to create a simple world that helps the focus of her characters and as it happens with other Cartoon Saloon productions, each design of the places where the story takes place are a warm example of how it surely looks in the books and in my opinion it is a great virtue not only of this director but of the whole animation team and I have always said that books make our imagination flourish, and when we see these films based on books I think that possibly what we see in the film is what parents and children imagine when they read such a wonderful story.
The script was written by Meg LeFauve who has written excellent scripts for movies like "Inside Out" (the sequel as well), "The Good Dinosaur" and has received recognition for creating stories that influence scripts in other films such as "Captain Marvel" and "Onward"; in this opportunity of a story created by her together with John Morgan and based on a book written more than 70 years ago we see how the relationship between a mother and her son facing problems can affect the relationship between both of them; I must say that I personally felt identified with the story because my mother did the impossible so that my brothers and I never lacked anything, but at the same time we understood the situation and we were always in our way a support to her and my father; this fascinates me about the story where we see how life can take a sudden turn and change everything forcing us to grow or face responsibilities and that despite being a story full of fantasy, I think it shows a great degree of reality from the stories of the stories of its many characters; in my opinion the script is fantastic.
Cómo dije en el anterior párrafo, los personajes son muy interesantes; por ejemplo "Elmer" y "Boris" quienes son los principales protagonistas; ambos creen que tiene el peso de ser los salvadores, de ayudar a todos, de crear magia para obtener la solución a los problemas y eso en vez de hacerlos sentir importantes lo que en realidad los llena es de presión y subsiguiente frustración y tristeza; es por eso que ambos conectan posiblemente creando una gran amistad que les ayudará a enfrentar todos los inconvenientes que deberán afrontar de ahora en adelante; ambos personajes son magníficos, están muy bien desarrollados e interpretados, son divertidos, en especial Boris que es mi personaje favorito así como "Soda" quien siempre he creído que es necesario conocer en algún momento de nuestras vidas alguien tan entusiasta y positiva. Tenía mucho tiempo que no disfrutaba de cada personaje en una historia.
As I said in the previous paragraph, the characters are very interesting; for example "Elmer" and "Boris" who are the main protagonists; both believe they have the weight of being the saviors, of helping everyone, of creating magic to obtain the solution to the problems and that instead of making them feel important what actually fills them is pressure and subsequent frustration and sadness; That's why they both connect possibly creating a great friendship that will help them to face all the inconveniences they will have to face from now on; both characters are magnificent, they are very well developed and interpreted, they are funny, especially Boris who is my favorite character as well as "Soda" who I have always believed that it is necessary to meet at some point in our lives someone so enthusiastic and positive. It has been a long time since I enjoyed every character in a story.
Al momento de ver My Father's Dragon, Netflix te indica que está historia está enfocada para un público infantil, de 7 años de edad en adelante y tienen toda la razón; el diseño de diferentes lugares, el mar, la isla, los animales y la magia; es algo que capta la vista de niños, pero la historia puede es completamente general, para cualquier público, es divertida , tiene aventuras, excelente música, hermosos colores y tal como ya lo he dicho, muy buenos personajes; aunque con todo eso, en mi opinión es un film más pequeño de lo que fue Wolfwalkers el cual creo que la animación fue mucho mejor, pero esta historia tiene menos drama que la anterior película producida por Cartoon Saloon y es que este nuevo film no destaca por tener a un terrible villano, sino demuestra lo que la desesperación puede hacer entre cada quien lo cual nos lleva a cometer errores de que después será difícil de arrepentirse, pero a la vez también demuestra el poder de la compresión, del entendimiento, del poder de la comunicación y eso es maravilloso; es por eso que esta película demuestra un gran relato sobre cosas que poco se ve al día de hoy y lamento que este film no tuviera más promoción o mayor opinión del público que disfruta del servicio de Netflix y ojalá que algún momento pueda captar al público y obtener el reconocimiento que merece.
When you watch My Father's Dragon, Netflix tells you that this story is focused for a child audience, 7 years old and up, and they are right; the design of different places, the sea, the island, the animals and the magic; is something that captures the view of children, but the story can be completely general, for any audience, it is fun, has adventures, excellent music, beautiful colors and as I said before, very good characters; although with all that, in my opinion it is a smaller film than Wolfwalkers which I think the animation was much better, but this story has less drama than the previous film produced by Cartoon Saloon and this new film does not stand out for having a terrible villain, but shows what desperation can do between everyone which leads us to make mistakes that later will be difficult to regret, but at the same time also shows the power of compression, understanding, the power of communication and that is wonderful; that is why this film shows a great story about things that are rarely seen today and I regret that this film did not have more promotion or more opinion from the public that enjoys the Netflix service and hopefully at some point it can capture the public and get the recognition it deserves.
