La ambición de un hombre lo hará hacer lo imposible para obtener fama y poder... "Nightmare Alley"
Por fin pude ver cada una de las nominadas a Mejor Película en los Premios Oscars; me tomé el tiempo de ver lo que consideré un buen grupo de films a pesar de que seguramente existe algún que otro film que pudo ser parte de este selecto grupo, pero para ser sincero, cada una de estas películas tienen características especiales para estar dentro de las nominadas aunque también debo decir de estas películas elegidas para competir en este prestigioso premio existen varias que son mejores del film ganador; el último film que me faltaba de ver era uno el cual es un remake y que a la vez es basado en una novela realizada a mediados de los años 40' y que el primer film también se estrenó en esa época.

Finally I was able to see each of the nominees for Best Picture at the Oscars; I took the time to see what I considered a good group of films even though there is surely some other film that could have been part of this select group, but to be honest, each of these films have special characteristics to be within the nominees although I must also say that of these films chosen to compete in this prestigious award there are several that are better than the winning film; the last film I had yet to see was one which is a remake and is based on a novel made in the mid 40's and the first film was also released at that time.
"Nightmare Alley" nos relata la historia de Stanton "Stan" Carlisle, un hombre con un pasado oscuro que necesita un dar un nuevo inicio a su vida y esa oportunidad de cambio llega cuando comienza a trabajar en un carnaval que viaja entre ciudades enseñando sus diferentes shows, uno de esos espectáculos pertenece a "Madame Zeena" quien junto a su esposo "Pete" tienen un acto lleno de trucos para adivinar el pasado y presente de la vida de cada uno de sus espectadores; esto llama la atención de Stan quien decide entablar una amistad tanto con Zeena como su esposo el cual es un alcohólico, pero mantiene su gran talento y quién decide enseñar sus trucos al joven y ambicioso Stan el cual tiene un plan para dejar el carnaval y crear un nuevo espectáculo, pero para lograrlo necesitará la ayuda de la hermosa joven Molly quien no teme a dejar a su familia del carnaval y comenzar una nueva aventura con Stan; lo que no se esperaba ella es que sería otro peón más en el gran plan de un hombre que nunca tuvo nada y que de repente piensa tener el poder para lograr todo.
"Nightmare Alley" tells the story of Stanton "Stan" Carlisle, a man with a dark past who needs a new start to his life and that opportunity for change comes when he starts working in a carnival that travels between cities teaching their different shows, one of those shows belongs to "Madame Zeena" who along with her husband "Pete" have an act full of tricks to guess the past and present life of each of its viewers; This attracts the attention of Stan who decides to establish a friendship with both Zeena and her husband who is an alcoholic, but maintains his great talent and who decides to teach his tricks to the young and ambitious Stan who has a plan to leave the carnival and create a new show, but to achieve this he will need the help of the beautiful young Molly who is not afraid to leave her carnival family and start a new adventure with Stan; what she did not expect is that she would be another pawn in the great plan of a man who never had anything and suddenly thinks he has the power to achieve everything.
Sin ser un fiel fan del trabajo de Guillermo del Toro, puedo decir que he visto varios de sus producciones; ese amor por crear historias en dónde sean protagonizadas por monstruos es algo que siempre me ha gustado y tenía la esperanza de ver en esta historia. El trabajo en la dirección es excelente, dividir está historia en dos facetas de la vida de su protagonista es una gran decisión porque del Toro tiene la posibilidad de mostrar dos diferentes mundos; mientras la historia transcurre en el Carnaval, todo es oscuro, rural, gris y sucio, en cambio, cuando está en la ciudad, todo es elegante, limpio, predomina la luz artificial y los colores dorados y negro, pero a la vez todo es frío y sigue siendo todo muy oscuro; creo que esto es porque el director tiene la necesidad de que sea una representación de lo que es su personaje principal el cual pareciera que es acompañado por una nube oscura trayendo desgracia a quien lo rodea; otras características relevantes del trabajo de este director es que al ser está una historia Noir, justamente mantenga ese estilo haciendo homenaje a films de mediados de los 40', el juego con las luces y sombras que da un toque de misterio a varios de sus personajes es algo que me gustó y que junto a la elegancia de los movimientos de los actores, su forma de hablar y estar en cada escena es lo que hace que este homenaje se pueda considerar perfecto.
El guion escrito entre del Toro y Kim Morgan tiene algún que otro cambio con respecto al film de esta misma historia estrenado hace ya 75 años; la historia es fascinante y es de uno de los otros puntos positivos del film, me gusta que demuestre muchas cosas como que por ejemplo, tener una vida ambiciosa, algo que no es malo porque cualquiera puede ser ambicioso por ser mejor en un futuro, pero como siempre hay que diferenciar entre el bien y el mal y justamente esa final línea no existe en esta historia; lo otro es el uso del el poder de la palabra y de la información, esto es algo importante en esta historia porque al conocer y manejar ambas cosas es claro que se obtiene un gran poder que puede manejar hasta las mentes más refinadas, ya que hasta pueden hacer caer creencias muy definidas, pero lo que más me gusta de esta historia es que nos enseña como si no se hace las cosas bien en la vida podemos convertirnos en eso que nunca esperamos en ser.
Without being a loyal fan of Guillermo del Toro's work, I can say that I have seen several of his productions; that love for creating stories where monsters are the main characters is something I have always liked and I was hoping to see in this story. The work in the direction is excellent, dividing this story in two facets of the life of its protagonist is a great decision because del Toro has the possibility to show two different worlds; while the story takes place in the Carnival, everything is dark, rural, gray and dirty, on the other hand, when he is in the city, everything is elegant, clean, artificial light and golden and black colors predominate, but at the same time everything is cold and everything is still very dark; I think this is because the director has the need for it to be a representation of his main character who seems to be accompanied by a dark cloud bringing misfortune to those around him; Other relevant characteristics of this director's work is that since this is a Noir story, he keeps that style paying homage to films from the mid 40's, the game with lights and shadows that gives a touch of mystery to several of his characters is something that I liked and that together with the elegance of the movements of the actors, their way of speaking and being in each scene is what makes this homage can be considered perfect.
The script written between del Toro and Kim Morgan has some changes with respect to the film of this same story released 75 years ago; the story is fascinating and is one of the other positive points of the film, I like that it shows many things like, for example, having an ambitious life, something that is not bad because anyone can be ambitious to be better in the future, but as always you have to differentiate between good and evil and precisely that final line does not exist in this story; The other thing is the use of the power of the word and the information, this is something important in this story because when you know and handle both things it is clear that you get a great power that can handle even the most refined minds, because they can even bring down very definite beliefs, but what I like most about this story is that it teaches us how if you do not do things right in life we can become what we never expected to be.
Creo que entre la extensa duración y las actuaciones es lo que menos me ha gustado de esta película; sé que el trabajo de del Toro se hace evidente al señalar en qué forma se debe mover los actores en muchas de sus escenas y eso es evidente, pero el resto del desempeño no es el esperado y con esto me refiero a la actuación de Bradley Cooper el cual solo en pasajes se nota que hace un buen trabajo, pero en completo creo que debió ser mejor, creo su exceso de confianza desde un principio afectó la evolución de su personaje y pienso que si hubiera personificado a "Stan" con un perfil en el principio de la historia, creo que todo lo que le sucede y llega a convertirse hubiera creado un mayor impacto; lo otro es que no está al par de algunas de sus compañeras de actuación por ejemplo el de Cate Blanchett quien se adueña de las escenas con la elegancia que interpreta a la "Dra. Lilith Ritter", su voz, su risa, sus gestos es lo que no hace viajar en el tiempo y ver el tipo de actuación que se hacía en la década de los 40'. Puedo nombrar un excelente trabajo de Willem Dafoe, Toni Collette y el mismo Ron Perlman que desde su actuación tienen un rol importante para esta historia porque, así como sucede con el personaje interpretado por Blanchet, su imagen es perfecta para este tipo de historias y más como personalidades dentro del carnaval.
I think that between the long running time and the performances is what I liked the least about this movie; I know that the work of del Toro is evident when he points out how the actors should move in many of his scenes and that is evident, but the rest of the performance is not as expected and by this I mean the performance of Bradley Cooper which only in passages you can see that he does a good job, but in full I think it should have been better, I think his overconfidence from the beginning affected the evolution of his character and I think if he had personified "Stan" with a profile at the beginning of the story, I think everything that happens to him and he becomes would have created a greater impact; the other thing is that she is not on par with some of her fellow actors for example that of Cate Blanchett who owns the scenes with the elegance that she plays "Dr. Lilith Ritter", her voice, her laugh, her gestures is what makes you travel back in time and see the kind of acting that was done in the 40's'. I can name an excellent work of Willem Dafoe, Toni Collette and the same Ron Perlman that from their acting have an important role for this story because, as it happens with the character played by Blanchet, his image is perfect for this kind of stories and more as personalities within the carnival.
Nightmare Alley es un buen film a pesar de sus fallas, creo que el hacer desde primer momento al personaje de Stan completamente confiado en lo que puede lograr fue algo a favor y en contra de la historia y pienso que con otro actor tal vez haya funcionado está idea, pero el desarrollo extenso de su segundo acto hace que el trabajo de Cooper no sea el mejor porque cuando debe ocurrir el desespero o el deterioro de su personaje, no se siente como tal y eso para mí le quita relevancia a esta película; aparte de lo anteriormente dicho, está historia de ambición no enseña que cualquier mal que hagamos en este mundo de alguna forma será devuelto y es que está historia a pesar de no existir monstruos con deformidades físicas, sí existen personas sin escrúpulos que usan el engaño y la necesidad de otros para obtener beneficios sin importar las consecuencias; es importante que a pesar de ser una historia que tiene más de 70 años de realizada, pueda sentirse tan actual, ya que estás prácticas de engaño, ambición y el uso desmedido el poder se puede seguir observando en cualquier ámbito de nuestra vida actual y esto es lo que seguramente atrajo a Guillermo del Toro al realizar este film y lo que personalmente me gustó. En mi opinión, entre las nominadas a Mejor Película en los Oscars está por debajo de otras que considero que son mejores, tal vez por el nombre de su director y la producción que es muy buena, sea lo que se tomó en cuenta para su nominación, pero aparte de todo eso pienso que este es un buen film y lo recomiendo por el buen trabajo de su director y guionista.
Nightmare Alley is a good film despite its flaws, I think that making Stan's character from the beginning completely confident in what he can achieve was something for and against the story and I think that with another actor maybe this idea would have worked, but the extensive development of his second act makes the work of Cooper not the best because when the desperation or deterioration of his character should occur, it does not feel like it and that for me takes away the relevance of this film; apart from the above mentioned, this story of ambition does not teach that any evil we do in this world will somehow be returned and this story despite the fact that there are no monsters with physical deformities, there are unscrupulous people who use deception and the need of others to obtain benefits regardless of the consequences; It is important that despite being a story that is more than 70 years old, it can feel so current, since these practices of deception, ambition and the excessive use of power can still be observed in any area of our lives today and this is what surely attracted Guillermo del Toro to make this film and what I personally liked. In my opinion, among the nominees for Best Picture at the Oscars it is below others that I consider to be better, perhaps because of the name of its director and the production which is very good, is what was taken into account for its nomination, but apart from all that I think this is a good film and I recommend it for the good work of its director and screenwriter.
