Este año he visto pocas películas de terror sobrenatural; creo que en años anteriores este estilo de films lo ha opacado el uso de las escenas jumpscare y en mi opinión, eso quita relevancia porque esas escenas son usadas para promocionar el film en los trailers y al momento de ver el film no hay nada que produzca miedo; ahora, en este año he visto alguno que otro film de terror sobrenatural y debo decir que las he disfrutado con los muchos clichés que las conforman y es que son dejar atrás las escenas jumpscare, creo que le dan importancia a la historia que quieren desarrollar y eso junto a buenas actuaciones de sus protagonistas y excelente trabajo de sus directores es lo necesario para crear una producción de calidad y ser un éxito en la taquilla.

This year I have seen few supernatural horror films; I think that in previous years this style of films has been overshadowed by the use of jumpscare scenes and in my opinion, that takes away relevance because those scenes are used to promote the film in the trailers and at the time of watching the film there is nothing to produce fear; now, this year I have seen some supernatural horror films and I must say that I have enjoyed them with the many clichés that make them up and they are leaving behind the jumpscare scenes, I think they give importance to the story they want to develop and that along with good performances of its protagonists and excellent work of its directors is what is necessary to create a quality production and be a success at the box office.
Las expectativas son en ocasiones el peor enemigo que puede tener una producción cinematográfica; diferentes opiniones sobre un film puede causar de que exista un temor de que no poder disfrutar por completo una historia la cual quieres ver y un ejemplo es el film que hago reseña en esta oportunidad y que ha recibido el nombramiento de ser la mejor película de terror del 2022, pero a pesar de recibir esa definición, mis expectativas son iguales desde el momento que vi el primer trailer de "Smile". En este film veremos la historia de "Rose", ella es una psiquiatra con un gran convicción para ayudar a cada paciente que va a su consultorio; un día debe tratar a una joven mujer sumamente alterada y que alega de que está siendo perseguida por un ente/espíritu que toma el rostro de otras personas y que la única manera de diferenciarlo es por una sonrisa terrorífica; en ese instante un evento sumamente traumático sucede que hará que Rose recuerde lo que vivió en su niñez y que comience a sentirse perseguida, que sienta que pierde la cordura y más cuando comience a ver a diferentes personas sonreírles de una manera macabra.
Expectations are sometimes the worst enemy that a film production can have; different opinions about a film can cause that there is a fear of not being able to fully enjoy a story which you want to see and an example is the film that I review in this opportunity and that has received the appointment of being the best horror film of 2022, but despite receiving that definition, my expectations are the same from the moment I saw the first trailer of "Smile ". In this film we will see the story of "Rose", she is a psychiatrist with a great conviction to help every patient who comes to her office; one day she must treat a young woman extremely altered and who claims that she is being pursued by an entity/spirit that takes the face of other people and that the only way to differentiate it is by a terrifying smile; At that moment an extremely traumatic event happens that will make Rose remember what she experienced in her childhood and she begins to feel persecuted, she feels that she loses her sanity and even more when she begins to see different people smiling at her in a macabre way.
Esta película fue dirigida y escrita por Parker Finn, el cual hace su debut como director de un largometraje con esta película que está basada en un Short Film que el mismo dirigió y que recibe el nombre de "Laura Hasn't Slept". El trabajo realizado por Finn es de lo mejor que he visto dentro del género del terror en este año; su manera de realizar diferentes tomas en muchas escenas fue algo que me sorprendió, tanto como la edición y fotografía, que es muy buena; mis escenas favoritas son las que dan comienzo al film porque podemos ver cómo cada vez se va haciendo más turbio el ambiente de esta historia y que funciona porque de esa manera vamos viendo como el mundo de "Rose" se va deteriorando por lo que debe experimentar.
La historia me ha gustado aunque siendo sincero es para nada original, primero que nada es notorio que al estar basada en una maldición, cumple con los muchos clichés que se encuentran en este tipo de historias, ahora con eso no quiero referirme a lo poco original del film, ya que es muy parecido a lo que fue "It Follows" y las muchas películas de terror hechas en Japón; con esto no quiero restar mérito a Finn al crear un relato en dónde use el terror que debe experimentar una persona cada vez que debe enfrentar un trauma, culpa y el dolor por una perdida; todo eso es real y me gusta que en gran parte del film deba suceder diferentes momentos en dónde la protagonista demuestre que no está loca; eso junto a como está desarrollado el tercer acto es de lo mejor que tiene esta película.
This film was directed and written by Parker Finn, who makes his feature directorial debut with this film, which is based on a short film he directed himself called "Laura Hasn't Slept". The work done by Finn is one of the best I've seen in the horror genre this year; his way of doing different shots in many scenes was something that surprised me, as well as the editing and photography, which is very good; my favorite scenes are the ones that start the film because we can see how the atmosphere of this story becomes increasingly murky and it works because that way we see how the world of "Rose" is deteriorating because of what she must experience.
I liked the story although being honest it is not original at all, first of all it is notorious that being based on a curse, it complies with the many clichés that are found in this type of stories, now with that I do not want to refer to the unoriginality of the film, as it is very similar to what was "It Follows" and the many horror films made in Japan; with this I do not want to detract merit to Finn to create a story where he uses the terror that a person must experience every time he must face a trauma, guilt and pain for a loss; all that is real and I like that in much of the film must happen different moments where the protagonist shows that she is not crazy; that along with how the third act is developed is the best thing about this film.
Este año he visto buen trabajo de actrices liderando películas de terror; actrices como Mía Goth, Maika Monroe y Rebecca Hall, son una de las cuales he visto que han hecho un gran trabajo en este año y después de ver este film debo incluir en esta breve lista a Sosie Bacon; ella es la película, su actuación es muy buena y la cual defino como incómoda; su personaje demuestra como alguien sin importar el status que tenga, puede tener una vida que no es completamente feliz por diferentes hechos que la perturban y que pueden convertirla en una bomba de tiempo, en algo frágil. Posiblemente, el personaje de Rose sea algo atípico en estas historias, ya que desde un principio, no es alguien que es sumamente estable para enfrentar todo lo que debe experimentar, pero justamente eso la hace perfecta a la historia del film y eso demuestra el potencial que tiene Sosie, porque he visto diferentes actuaciones en dónde puede hacer de una mujer fuerte y decidida como su breve trabajo en la serie de Netflix "Narcos México" o de alguien que tiene un gran sentimiento de culpa que posiblemente la hunda más en una maldición.
This year I have seen good work from actresses leading horror movies; actresses like Mia Goth, Maika Monroe and Rebecca Hall, are one of the ones I have seen that have done a great job this year and after watching this film I must include in this short list Sosie Bacon; she is the film, her performance is very good and which I define as uncomfortable; her character shows how someone no matter what status she has, can have a life that is not completely happy because of different events that disturb her and that can turn her into a time bomb, into something fragile. Possibly, Rose's character is something atypical in these stories, since from the beginning, she is not someone who is extremely stable to face everything she must experience, but precisely that makes her perfect to the story of the film and that shows the potential that Sosie has, because I have seen different performances where she can play a strong and determined woman like her brief work in the Netflix series "Narcos Mexico" or someone who has a great sense of guilt that possibly sinks her deeper into a curse.
Smiles me gustó mucho, me sorprendió y me pareció genial y a pesar de eso, no sé si nombrar la como el mejor film de terror del año, creo que está a la par de Barbarian, Watcher y The Black Phone y esto lo digo porque lamentablemente la falta de originalidad le resta para considerarla como la mejor aunque el desarrollo de la historia, el trabajo de Finn en la dirección y la actuación de Sosie la convierten el gran éxito que es, pero eso mismo lo percibí de los films antes nombrados; con esto no resto merito a esta película, creo que es una gran presentación para todo lo que es como producción y por todas las personas que están envueltas en el proyecto; creo que puedo considerada como una excelente unión en ese estilo del extrañamente llamado Terror Elevado y el tipo film con escenas jumpscare y eso me pareció sumamente divertido y por eso recomiendo Smile en un 100%, es otro excelente trabajo dentro del género del terror y les digo que lamentablemente por su éxito seguro que está será el primer film de una franquicia y si es así, solo espero que para la próxima cuenten en la dirección y escritura del guion con Parker Finn.
I really liked Smiles, I was surprised and I thought it was great and despite that, I don't know if I should name it as the best horror film of the year, I think it is on par with Barbarian, Watcher and The Black Phone and I say this because unfortunately the lack of originality subtracts it to consider it as the best although the development of the story, the work of Finn in the direction and the performance of Sosie make it the great success that it is, but that same I perceived from the films mentioned above; This is not to take away from the merit of this film, I think it is a great presentation for everything that it is as a production and for all the people involved in the project; I think I can consider it as an excellent union in that style of the strangely named Elevated Horror and the type of film with jumpscare scenes and that seemed to me extremely fun and that is why I recommend Smile 100%, it is another excellent work within the horror genre and I tell you that unfortunately for its success I am sure that this will be the first film of a franchise and if so, I just hope that for the next one they count on Parker Finn to direct and write the script.
