The Boys - Final Season Review [ES - EN]

Después de 7 años, la producción original de Amazon Prime Video, "The Boys", llegó a su final en lo que fue su muy criticada 5.ª temporada. Esta producción basada en el cómic del mismo nombre ofreció una panorámica diferente a lo que se estaba consumiendo con respecto a tanto películas como series basadas en héroes de cómic y, en el momento de su estreno, fue más que un aire fresco, ya que en esta oportunidad los llamados héroes, desde sus imperfecciones y corrompidos por sus poderes, cumplieron la función de villanos y un grupo de marginados con sed de venganza eran quienes tenían la difícil misión de detenerlos, eso sí, sin la gran necesidad de ser llamados héroes.

After seven years, the Amazon Prime Video original series, "The Boys", came to an end with its highly criticized fifth season. This series, based on the comic book of the same name, offered a different perspective from what was typically seen in both movies and TV shows featuring comic book heroes. At the time of its premiere, it was more than just a breath of fresh air, as this time around the so-called heroes, with their flaws and corrupted by their powers, played the role of villains, and a group of outcasts thirsting for revenge were the ones tasked with the difficult mission of stopping them—though they certainly didn’t need to be called heroes.

Ahora, enfocándome en lo que fue la temporada final de esta serie, no diré que la expectativa causada por lo que era su final fue algo que no había visto en anterioridad, pero justamente esa emoción en fans (y otros no tanto) de la serie, personalmente, me hizo ser precavido con cómo se iba a relatar esta parte de la historia, a sabiendas de que el enfrentamiento final entre sus protagonistas era lo más evidente que sucediera, así que con eso dicho, solo quedaba ver cómo deberían llevar a cabo la nueva misión de este grupo de locos personajes que de una forma u otra debería concretarse y justamente en eso es en lo que critico (de manera negativa) tanto esta temporada como las dos anteriores, en donde el generar una idea para poner fin a la poderosa amenaza de los "Supes" se hizo repetitiva; no molesta, pero creo que en eso se extendió la historia a pesar de durar tan solo 5 temporadas.

Now, focusing on the final season of this series, I won’t say that the anticipation surrounding its ending was something I hadn’t seen before, but it was precisely that excitement among fans (and others who aren’t quite as devoted) of the series that, personally, made me cautious about how this part of the story would be told, knowing that the final showdown between the main characters was the most obvious outcome, so with that said, all that was left was to see how this group of crazy characters would carry out their new mission, which in one way or another had to come to fruition—and that is precisely what I criticize (negatively) about both this season and the two previous ones, where coming up with a way to put an end to the powerful threat of the “Supes” became repetitive; It’s not annoying, but I think that’s where the story dragged on, even though it only lasted five seasons.

El guion posiblemente fue el más correcto para funcionar como una despedida y posiblemente eso fue lo que generó el rechazo en ciertos fans con respecto a decisiones que rehusaron aceptar; el hecho de generar o desarrollar las historias de muchos de los personajes en esta temporada posiblemente generó menos tiempo en escena a los considerados como favoritos, pero personalmente creo que ciertas decisiones fueron acertada y otras no tanto, por ejemplo las que considero acertada fue dar protagonismo a "Ashley", "The Deep" o a la relación muy disfuncional entre "Soldier Boy" y "Homelander" y entre las no acertadas fue la historia familiar de "Starlight" o los cameos sin ninguna relevancia de personajes del ya cancelado spin-off "Gen V", a todo eso debo sumar los signos de fatiga que presentaba Prime Video con su exitosa producción; lamentablemente, el presupuesto debió ser muy bajo porque la calidad de escenas fue muy pobre, y estuve convencido de que el mayor gasto se hizo en la batalla dentro del campo de concentración y, por supuesto, el enfrentamiento final, pero aparte de todo eso, lo demás no fue para nada bueno.

The script was probably the best choice for a farewell, and that may be what led certain fans to reject decisions they refused to accept; the fact that this season focused on developing the stories of many characters likely meant less screen time for fan favorites, but personally, I think some decisions were spot-on and others not so much. For example, I think it was a good call to give a prominent role to “Ashley,” "The Deep," or the highly dysfunctional relationship between "Soldier Boy" and "Homelander." Among the missteps were "Starlight’s" family storyline or the irrelevant cameos of characters from the now-canceled spin-off "Gen V." To all that, I must add the signs of fatigue Prime Video was showing with its hit production; unfortunately, the budget must have been very low because the quality of the scenes was very poor, and I was convinced that the biggest expense went into the battle inside the concentration camp and, of course, the final showdown, but aside from all that, the rest was not good at all.

Uno de los factores influyentes en el éxito de la serie se debió a la interpretación de sus personajes, en especial el trabajo de Antony Starr y Karl Urban como "Homelander" y "William Butcher"; personajes más que icónicos, no solo en la serie, sino en la cultura pop actual, y entre ellos (como debe ser) está el mantener a flote la temporada, y creo que cumplieron con ese importante rol y, repito, sé que se tenían altas expectativas con ambos personajes, en especial con el visto como un imponente dios, pero creo que su interpretación en esta temporada, rompiendo toda expectativa del público, fue correcta a todo lo que ofreció en temporadas anteriores y esta puede ser una opinión muy impopular, pero creo que Homelander como personaje no podía ofrecer más porque se haría aún más repetitivo; de igual manera ofrezco mi opinión sobre Butcher, que siempre fue fiel a su reacción primordial y a lo que motivó al desarrollo de esa historia y regreso a que su personaje, como los demás, pareciera ser parte de un círculo vicioso que avanzaba muy poco de la historia, pero al ser este el fin, puedo decir que tanto su cierre como el de su gran rival fue muy correcto.

One of the key factors in the series' success was the portrayal of its characters, particularly the performances of Antony Starr and Karl Urban as "Homelander" and "William Butcher"—characters who are more than just iconic, not only in the series but in today's pop culture as well. Among their roles (as it should be) is keeping the season afloat, and I believe they fulfilled that important role. I know there were high expectations for both characters, especially for the one seen as an imposing god, but I think their portrayal this season—defying all audience expectations—was on par with everything they offered in previous seasons. This may be a very unpopular opinion, but I believe that Homelander, as a character, couldn’t have offered more because it would have become even more repetitive; Similarly, I’d like to offer my opinion on Butcher, who always remained true to his core reaction and to what drove the development of that story. I’ll come back to the fact that his character, like the others, seemed to be part of a vicious cycle that moved the story forward very little, but since this was the end, I can say that both his conclusion and that of his great rival were very well done.

La temporada final no fue perfecta, pero afirmo que varias de sus decisiones fueron acertadas para generar el cierre satisfactorio de su episodio final llamado "Blood and Bone"; me pareció genial que justamente el final fuese relatado desde dos puntos de vista, primeramente por parte de Butcher, que se le presentó una oportunidad única en donde no podía posponer su venganza así estuvieran involucradas personas a quienes de alguna manera él ama. Ese relato sobre la necesidad de hacer justicia y poner fin al trauma que causó Homelander fue perfecto, pero así como él fue un gran protagonista, también necesitó que alguien relatara su historia y el encargado fue "Hughie Campbell", quien es la parte bondadosa de The Boys, lo verdaderamente correcto o, por lo menos, esa imagen buena (por así decirlo) que te habla en uno de tus hombros; creo que esa fue la mejor decisión del showrunner de la serie y de sus guionistas para hacer un muy buen episodio acorde no solo a la temporada, sino a toda la historia, lo cual generó uno de los finales más satisfactorios que he visto en los últimos años. The Boys fue muy buena serie, su crítica constante usando la sátira para burlarse primeramente de la explotación del genero de superhéroes y que se extendió a muchos otros ámbitos de la sociedad actual, fue lo que más me gustó, ya que hubo momentos en dónde describir a esta producción no como una serie, sino como un documental y aunque en esta temporada posiblemente no se sintió como tal, ya que era primordial preparar al cierre de la historia, creo que hubo elementos que hicieron referencia a la realidad, creo que eso es lo que más me gustó de esta serie que se atrevió a hacer una crítica justa y que actualmete no se observa y espero que en las próximas producciones a estrenar siga con ese tematica y que por supuesto sigan siendo de alta calidad. 

The final season wasn't perfect, but I'd argue that several of its decisions were spot-on in delivering a satisfying conclusion to the finale, titled "Blood and Bone"; I thought it was brilliant that the ending was told from two perspectives—first from Butcher's point of view, who was presented with a unique opportunity where he couldn't put off his revenge, even if it involved people he loves in some way. That narrative about the need to seek justice and put an end to the trauma caused by Homelander was perfect, but just as he was a great protagonist, the story also needed someone to tell his side, and that role fell to "Hughie Campbell," who represents the kind-hearted side of The Boys—the voice of what’s truly right, or at least that "good" image (so to speak) whispering in your ear; I think that was the best decision by the showrunner and the writers to create a truly great episode that fit not only the season but the entire story, resulting in one of the most satisfying endings I’ve seen in recent years. The Boys was a very good series; its constant critique, using satire to mock first and foremost the exploitation of the superhero genre—and which extended to many other areas of today’s society—was what I liked most, since there were moments where I could describe this production not as a series, but as a documentary. And although this season may not have felt like one, since it was essential to set the stage for the story’s conclusion, I think there were elements that referenced reality. I believe that’s what I liked most about this series—that it dared to offer a fair critique, something rarely seen today—and I hope that upcoming productions will continue with this theme and, of course, remain of high quality.
