The term "cult films" is widely used in the world of cinema to describe productions that weren't a complete box-office success but later find a niche audience that adores them and values them highly. This term fits horror movies particularly well, as they are ultimately more likely to be considered cult classics due to the loyalty of the genre’s fans—though that doesn’t necessarily mean the movie itself is good or bad. I specifically want to highlight the value of a film earning this designation because it seems that these days, labeling a movie as a cult classic happens all too easily, and, in my opinion, that can diminish the value of such a classification.

The Empty Man, a film released in 2020 during the pandemic, is based on a comic book of the same name. Although it did not perform very well in test screenings with different audiences prior to its release, it was still released in theaters, where it had poor box office results despite its low production cost. Some time later, both critics and audiences began to change their minds about the film, which is now considered a cult classic. This supernatural horror film tells the story of a former police officer named “James Lasombra,” who has a traumatic past and decides to investigate the disappearance of a young woman, leading him to uncover a cult with disturbing secrets; this simple synopsis provides a great and straightforward introduction to a story that made a significant effort to demonstrate originality in its narrative.

David Prior serves as both screenwriter and director; this is his first—and, so far, only—feature film to be released. As I mentioned earlier, Prior strives to demonstrate originality in the narrative by seeking to capture the viewer’s attention with various events that cause the story to shift between horror and thriller. In my opinion, this film belongs more to the thriller genre than to horror, since the horror we see in both the first act (or prologue) and the second act is mostly a decoy to create a mystery for which there is no answer—and this is precisely where the first problem arises: the screenplay shows a significant divide between the two genres rather than blending them to create a better story. Prior’s direction is, for the most part, competent yet unremarkable; this is because while he succeeds in setting the mood for a suspenseful narrative, none of the jump-scare scenes are effective.

I’d like to know what led certain audiences and critics to label The Empty Man a cult film; personally, I’m not just referring to the film’s quality—which is poor—but also to the fact that it contributes absolutely nothing to any of the genres it draws upon in its narrative. I think that if this film had been released in 2000 or during the boom in Japanese horror movie remakes, it might have achieved some success because its influence on the work of Prior both in terms of direction and screenplay—but in this case, despite using elements already seen in a large number of films—such as an entity or curse that causes death, a protagonist haunted by his past, a mystery to be solved, and a possible plot twist—none of these elements work. This film didn’t entertain me, and perhaps the fact that it carries the “cult classic” label is what led me to have expectations that weren’t met—and the worst part is that I know even without that label, I wouldn’t have had any expectations for it; even so, I’d still consider it a mediocre to bad film.

That happens to us sometimes—we have high expectations for a movie, especially when we’ve read about it or had it recommended to us. The truth is, not all that glitters is gold, and here’s an example of that. It’s pretty disappointing to see how we waste our time watching something that goes nowhere.

¡Interesante!
