Still, he knows who should wear the Green Lantern ring; that expectation, expressed in the eulogy read in the previous episode, shows that in some way Hal was indeed prepared to give up the ring—possibly out of fear of succumbing to his legacy—but that didn’t stop him from believing that whoever took up his mantle could do the job, and that’s why he chose to use words written on a piece of paper to show his support and respect.
