Para alguien que le gusta ver thrillers, historias de misterio, de detectives y demás; mi conocimiento sobre "Edgar Allan Poe" es mínima; la primera vez que supe de ese escritor fue gracias a uno de los episodios de "The Simpsons" en dónde se realizó una versión sobre su famoso poema conocido como "The Raven", de ahí en adelante mi conocimiento siempre fue algo muy vago, pero al momento de ver esta nueva producción de Netflix, pensé que una serie con gran impacto en la cultura pop fue la que me presentó a este gran escritor en mi niñez, pero de igual manera no fue desarrollado mucho más porque en mi adolescencia no hubo otro medio más que impulsará descubrir otros trabajos de Allan Poe y solo queda ver y (posiblemente) disfrutar de otras producciones que se pueden tomar libertadores del trabajo original o la vida de este gran escritor.

For someone who likes to watch thrillers, mystery stories, detective stories and others; my knowledge about "Edgar Allan Poe" is minimal; the first time I knew about that writer was thanks to one of the episodes of "The Simpsons" where a version was made about his famous poem known as "The Raven", from then on my knowledge was always something very vague, but at the moment of watching this new Netflix production, I thought that a series with great impact on pop culture was the one that introduced me to this great writer in my childhood, but in the same way it was not developed much more because in my adolescence there was no other means more that will push to discover other works of Allan Poe and it only remains to see and (possibly) enjoy other productions that can be taken liberators of the original work or the life of this great writer.
Primera reseña de un film estrenado en este año y es de uno de los proyectos el cual tenía curiosidad de ver, aunque antes de su estreno parece que no impactó mucho en varios críticos y eso hizo que mis expectativas bajarán, pero de igual manera quería ver más que nada el trabajo de los actores que lideran este thriller que relata la historia de un retirado detective y un cadete con un futuro formidable. En "The Pale Blue Eye" nos situaremos en 1830 y nos enfocamos en la vida de "Augustus Landor" un retirado y experimentado detective que vive solo en un lugar muy rural; él es contratado por el ejército norteamericano para investigar un caso atípico que ha sucedido en la Academia Militar en West Point, Nueva York; esto hace en lo que parecía un simple hecho, se convierta en algo más complicado de resolver y eso hará que esté jubilado detective busque ayuda en uno de los cadetes de dicha academia, ese cadete es el muy peculiar "Edgar Allan Poe" que con toda la curiosidad del mundo acepta el trabajo para esclarecer un misterio que podrá cambiar no solo la vida de dicho cadete, sino de quién dirige esa investigación.
First review of a film released this year and it is one of the projects which I was curious to see, although before its release it seems that it did not impact much on several critics and that made my expectations lower, but I wanted to see more than anything the work of the actors who lead this thriller that tells the story of a retired detective and a cadet with a formidable future. In "The Pale Blue Eye" we are set in 1830 and focus on the life of "Augustus Landor" a retired and experienced detective living alone in a very rural place; he is hired by the US Army to investigate an atypical case that has happened at the Military Academy at West Point, New York; This makes what seemed a simple fact, becomes something more complicated to solve and that will make this retired detective seek help from one of the cadets of the academy, that cadet is the very peculiar "Edgar Allan Poe" that with all the curiosity in the world accepts the job to solve a mystery that can change not only the life of the cadet, but who directs the investigation.
Este film es dirigido y escrito por Scott Cooper, del cual solo he visto uno de sus trabajos y es el film "Black Mass" (2015). En esta oportunidad en la parte direccional en mi opinión hace un correcto trabajo,.me gusta mucho la tonalidad en las escenas y eso es debido a la poca iluminación que tienen, justamente tiene un tono azul tanto en las que transcurre en el día como en la noche y me gustó porque nos hace viajar a esa época; otras características que resalto es darle importancia a ciertos momentos del film y es que los pocos dónde hay tensión, los resalta muy bien sin importar que sucedan en un pasillo o en pleno bosque, el uso de la poca iluminación y el sonido es algo vital para que funcionen dichas escenas y justamente Cooper lo hace muy bien; ojalá se hubiera explorado mucho más en otras escenas.
La historia es lo que encontré regular; aunque para ser justo, hay mayormente factores buenos qué malos; por ejemplo la investigación realizada por el personaje de "Landor" me gustó igual que la realizada por "Poe", así como los diálogos que comparten ambos personajes; ahora mi problema es como se desarrolla el crimen en sí, como funciona con las pistas que nos dan mientras transcurre la película y es que a pesar de ser soy de los que piensa que no todo puede ser revelado en una historia y que habrá cosas que deberán ser entendibles por parte del espectador; creo que se pudo desarrollar mucho mejor dentro del guion si necesidad de contar tanto y es que en mi opinión todo se resuelve muy convenientemente y por eso creo que se pudo hacer algo mejor aunque el resultado final, ese último acto es lo mejor del film.
This film is directed and written by Scott Cooper, of whom I have only seen one of his works and that is the film "Black Mass" (2015). In this opportunity in the directional part in my opinion he does a correct job,. I really like the tonality in the scenes and that is due to the low lighting they have, just has a blue tone both in which takes place in the day and at night and I liked it because it makes us travel to that time; Other features that stand out is to give importance to certain moments of the film and is that the few where there is tension, highlights them very well regardless of whether they happen in a hallway or in the woods, the use of low lighting and sound is vital to make these scenes work and precisely Cooper does it very well; I wish it had been explored much more in other scenes.
The story is what I found regular; although to be fair, there are mostly good factors than bad; for example the investigation carried out by the character of "Landor" I liked the same as the one carried out by "Poe", as well as the dialogues shared by both characters; now my problem is how the crime itself is developed, how it works with the clues that we are given while the film is going on and despite I am one of those who think that not everything can be revealed in a story and that there will be things that must be understandable by the viewer; I think it could be developed much better within the script without the need to tell so much and in my opinion everything is solved very conveniently and therefore I think it could be done better although the final result, the last act is the best of the film.
Las actuaciones de Christian Bale y Harry Melling son lo mejor del film; el trabajo de ambos actores es correcto porque en ningún momento son exagerados, sus personajes no necesitan demostrar más de lo que son; no existe ese diálogo en dónde deben dejar en ridículos a otros personajes o entre ellos mismos para demostrar inteligencia; eso me pareció magnífico porque no existe la competitividad entre ellos y eso hace que está historia se sienta diferente; ahora sí por separado, Bale sabe interpretar a alguien solitario que es perseguido por memorias del pasado y que no disfruta nada de lo que hace a pesar de sentirse obligado a hacer justicia y aunque dije que no actúa para demostrar su inteligencia, su personaje por supuesto que es inteligente, serio, sereno, pero tal como dije no deja de ser alguien que no disfruta para nada la vida; con respecto al trabajo de _Melling interpretado a una versión joven de "Edgar Allan Poe", me gustó que no es tan exageradamente dispuesto a demostrar que tan diferente es, creo que su relación con "Landor" pudo derribar muros y mostrarse tal como es y es que la confianza entre ambos es un tema importante para esta historia y justamente eso hace que su personaje sea relevante, más que el interpretado por Bale que en mi opinión en gran parte se convierte en un actor de reparto, algo necesario para el relato de esta historia.
The performances of Christian Bale and Harry Melling are the best of the film; the work of both actors is correct because at no time are they exaggerated, their characters do not need to show more than what they are; there is no dialogue where they must ridicule other characters or each other to show intelligence; I thought that was great because there is no competitiveness between them and that makes this story feel different; now separately, Bale knows how to play someone lonely who is haunted by memories of the past and does not enjoy anything he does despite feeling obliged to do justice and although I said that he does not act to demonstrate his intelligence, his character of course is intelligent, serious, serene, but as I said, he is still someone who does not enjoy life at all; regarding the work of _Melling played a young version of "Edgar Allan Poe", I liked that he is not so exaggeratedly willing to show how different he is, I think his relationship with "Landor" could break down walls and show himself as he is and the trust between them is an important issue for this story and that is exactly what makes his character relevant, more than the one played by Bale who in my opinion largely becomes a supporting actor, something necessary for the narrative of this story.
Puede ser contradictorio que clasifique a The Pale Blue Eye como un film regular a pesar de tener cosas buenas, pero es que hay elementos que en mi opinión hacen que parte de su relato decaiga o sé que convierta en predecible y eso me decepcionó por un momento aunque los treinta minutos finales hace que el film tenga una mejor valoración de la que ya tiene por las actuaciones de sus dos actores principales, pero estoy convencido de que pudo ser mejor, algo que resalte el misterio del crimen que se está investigando y ahí seguramente se hubiera hecho un mejor trabajo. Este film es lento como la mayoría de los thrillers, pero tiene muchas cosas interesantes que ya he citado en los párrafos anteriores, hay un breve fan service, pero a pesar de ser una historia lenta en su primera hora, creo que lo que sucede en el segundo y tercer acto recompensa al espectador y eso es algo que debo señalar porque muchas veces observamos producciones de Netflix en dónde pareciera que no saben cómo terminar una historia y gratamente en esta producción sucede todo lo contrario; así que sin importar (en mi opinión) algunos fallos que presente, recomiendo este film, es un buen misterio que resolver, un film entretenido con muy buenas actuaciones.
It may be contradictory that I classify The Pale Blue Eye as a regular film despite having good things, but there are elements that in my opinion make part of the story decay or become predictable and that disappointed me for a moment although the final thirty minutes makes the film have a better rating than it already has for the performances of its two main actors, but I am convinced that it could have been better, something that highlights the mystery of the crime that is being investigated and there surely would have done a better job. This film is slow like most thrillers, but it has many interesting things that I have already mentioned in the previous paragraphs, there is a brief fan service, but despite being a slow story in its first hour, I think what happens in the second and third act rewards the viewer and that is something I must point out because many times we watch Netflix productions where it seems that they do not know how to end a story and pleasantly in this production the opposite happens; so regardless (in my opinion) of some flaws it presents, I recommend this film, it is a good mystery to solve, an entertaining film with very good performances.
