Reviewing Movies I Don't Like: 'Creep' by Patrick Kack-Brice

Review by @namiks · 3012d · of Creep

Creep.jpeg

Blumhouse Productions is known mostly for their awful found-footage films. Their low-budget horrors that never seem to convey anything of worth; no particular emotions, no interesting narrative, and mediocre performances. Unfortunately, Creep is yet another.

A filmmaker is pursuing an advertisement requesting help filming a diary for his son, in the event that his illness results in his death soon. For the day, Aaron is offered $1,000, which seems too good to pass up given his current financial instability.

Aaron spends his time filming Josef, who seems particularly strange and excited about their newfound friendship, with Josef often pulling strange pranks on Aaron, and slowly telling truths to his occasional small lies. Eventually, Aaron starts to feel unsafe and begins to find ways to escape, but in typical horror genre fashion, he also avoids every prior opportunity of escaping to make another dumb decision.

Being relatively oblivious to the film's narrative, I very early on began to theorise, thinking that the film could pull a smart twist and have the viewer believe Josef is the 'creep' by pulling off questionable actions, but ultimately is truthful and the creep is in fact Aaron, who is mostly behind the camera. This felt like it would have been a much better story, as it simply wouldn't have been as predictable.

Unfortunately, there's really not much here. The odd jump scare, a short run-time, and a whole lot of obviousness. By the end, there's nothing stopping you from saying 'well, could have been a lot worse, but I wish I just watched something else for an hour', and that's disappointing given the low budget side of the film wasn't ever majorly evident outside of its locations, its performances weren't all that bad, and its visuals were what you'd expect from a 'found footage' film.

Great review. I honestly enjoyed this film. As a microbudget filmmaker, I liked the idea that I could have made something like this myself. Definitely extremely predictable but it was kind of easy to identify with the main character/ filmmaker for me, although I wouldn't be this stupid.

    Have a great weekend, buddy!
