After three tedious days (thanks to the horrible internet😤) I was finally able to see the long awaited return of one of my favorite witch trio: Hocus Pocus 2 (El Retorno de Las Brujas o Abracadabra, for its translation). I remember that I was about 7 or 8 years old when I saw the first installment, I saw it on the mouse channel and then it was always shown on a national television channel (which later was taken off the air), it was always on at this time of the year, and I never missed it. I had everyone bored at home because if it was shown on cable, I watched it, and if it was shown on open signal, I watched it again (the compulsion to watch repeated movies was born with me). And since I have my inner child awake 24/7, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to watch this wonderful sequel.

Luego de tres tediosos días (gracias internet horrible😤) pude, por fin, ver el tan anhelado regreso de uno de mis tríos favoritos de brujas: Hocus Pocus 2 (El Retorno de Las Brujas o Abracadabra, por su traducción). Recuerdo que en su primera entrega tendría como unos 7 u 8 años, la vi en el canal del ratón y luego la pasaban siempre en un canal de televisión nacional (que después sacaron del aire), la colocaban siempre para estas fechas, y nunca me la perdía. Ya tenía a todos aburridos en casa porque si la pasaban por la cablera, la veía, y si la pasaban por señal abierta, la volvía a ver (la compulsión por ver películas repetidas como que nació conmigo). Y como yo tengo a mi niña interior despierta 24/7, no pude dejar pasar la oportunidad de ver esta maravillosa secuela.

Let's do a little retrospective about the first part released in 1993: As the story has told us, the witches were kept alive and young by absorbing the youth of children, this is what leads the Sanderson sisters to the gallows when they were discovered by the people of Salem. The last girl to be victimized had an older brother whom the sisters had turned into a black cat when he tried to confront them and save his little sister, leaving him in this form forever. Hundreds of years later, on Halloween, a group of young people go to have a good time going to the witches' house. As everything is dark, the boy lights a candle that, if lit by a virgin, brings back the sisters, and it is here that their hunt begins again before dawn breaks and they have to go back the way they came.

Hagamos un poco de retrospección acerca de la primera parte estrenada en 1993: Como nos lo ha dicho la historia, las brujas se mantenían vivas y jóvenes por absorber la juventud de los niños, esto es lo que lleva a la hermanas Sanderson a la horca al ser descubiertas por el pueblo de Salem. La ultima niña que fue víctima, tenía un hermano mayor al cual las hermanas lo habían convertido en un gato negro al tratar de enfrentarlas y salvar a su pequeña hermana, quedando en esta forma para siempre. Cientos de años después, en Halloween, un grupo de jóvenes van a pasarla bien yendo a la casa de las brujas. Como todo está oscuro, el chico enciende una vela que, si la prende alguien virgen, trae de vuelta a la hermanas, y es aquí donde comienza de nueva su cacería antes de que amanezca y tengan que volver por donde vinieron.

Yes, I could realize that it was not the end, since the sisters' magic book was still alive, but I did not imagine that they would wait 29 years to come back with a new installment. This time, we are shown a bit of the childhood of the sisters who were still unaware of their magical qualities, until they flee Salem into the forbidden forest and meet the witch mother. The witch mother reveals to them their skills as witches and because it is Wini's 16th birthday, she gives her book of spells as a gift. With the book, the sisters vow to take revenge on all of Salem for trying to separate and banish them, but above all, to take revenge on Reverend Trask.

Si me pude percatar de que no había sido el final, ya que el libro mágico de las hermanas aún estaba con vida, pero no imaginé que iban a esperar 29 años para volver con una nueva entrega. Esta vez, nos muestran un poco la infancia de las hermanas que aún desconocían sus cualidades de magia, hasta que huyen de Salem hacia el bosque prohibido y se consiguen con la madre bruja. La madre bruja les revela a ellas sus aptitudes de brujas y por ser el cumpleaños 16 de Wini, le obsequia su libro de hechizos. Ya con el libro, las hermanas juran vengarse de todo Salem por intentar separarlas y desterrarlas, pero sobre todo, vengarse del reverendo Trask.

The events we saw in the first part are over and we find ourselves in the present day. A trio of friends who are attracted to magic have a tradition of spending October 31st together, which also happens to be the birthday of one of them, Beca. This year is particularly different, since Beca turns 16, Cassie will not be sharing with them that day and, without realizing it, they set a trap for them to bring the Sanderson sisters back to life. Everything went crazy for these girls who tried to trick the witches into believing that in this era, everyone loved them and they no longer had to hunt children because they already sold the potions in the apothecaries.

Pasaron los hechos que vimos en la primer parte y nos encontramos en la actualidad. Un trio de amigas que sienten atracción por la magia, tienen como tradición pasar juntas el 31 de octubre, fecha en la que también es el cumpleaños de una de ellas, Beca. Este año es particularmente distinto, ya que Beca cumple 16 años, Cassie no estará compartiendo con ellas ese día y, sin darse cuenta, les tienden una trampa para que traigan de nuevo a la vida a las hermanas Sanderson. Todo se volvió una locura para estas chicas que intentaban engañar a las brujas haciéndoles creer que en esta época, todos las amaban y ya no tenían que cazar niños porque ya vendían las pócimas en las botiquerías.

All this causes a lot of fun, as everyone in town is in costume, they think the sisters are too, they flatter them for their authentic costumes and great resemblance to the witches. This distracts them a little, they have their egos sky high, but realizing that they are being tricked by the young women, they go after them, lock them up and return to their goal: to get the descendant of the reverend, who is now the mayor, or failing that, his daughter Cassie.

Todo esto causa mucha gracia, como todos en el pueblo están disfrazados, creen que las hermanas también lo están, las adulan por sus atuendos tan auténticos y gran parecido a las brujas. Esto las distrae un poco, tienen el ego por las nubes, pero al darse cuenta de que están siendo engañadas por las jóvenes, éstas van tras ellas, las encierran y vuelven a su objetivo: conseguir al descendiente del reverendo, que ahora es el alcalde, o en su defecto, a su hija Cassie.

While they wanted revenge on the town and to kill the mayor, in the midst of their anger Wini decides that they will cast the spell they promised the witch mother never to cast: the Magical Maxima. The book, which has a conscience, tries to stop them from casting the spell, but it is useless, it cannot disobey the orders of its owners. Blinded, they put their plan into action and cast a spell on the town to find the mayor and deliver him to them, which turned out to be a very funny fiasco.

Si bien querían vengarse del pueblo y matar al alcalde, en medio de su ira Wini decide que harán el hechizo que le prometieron a la madre bruja jamás hacer: el Magical Maxima. El libro, que tiene conciencia, trata de impedir que hagan el hechizo, pero es inútil, no puede desobedecer las órdenes de sus dueñas. Enceguecidas, ponen en marcha su plan y hechizan al pueblo para que encuentren al alcalde y se lo entreguen a ellas, lo cual se volvió un fiasco muy gracioso.

While all this is going on, Beca realizes that she also possesses magic, but because of how fast all the events are happening, she can't process it and tries to stop the Sanderson sisters from hurting anyone. In addition to this, to make the potion for the Magical Maxima spell, they need certain ingredients and among them, is the head of a lover. In the first movie, we are told that Wini's lover was Billy and that he had cheated on her with her sister Sara (that's why she kills him), but on that occasion he could not explain the facts because his lips were sewn together by a spell. This time, when he is found to do the spell and already without sewn lips, he explains that he was never her lover, it was simply a matter of a kiss (this is also shown at the beginning of this sequel). This gives us to think that the spell that Wini and her sisters want to do, would not work, but I think they did not realize that little flaw in the story and continued with the plot.

Mientras sucede todo esto, Beca se da cuenta de que también posee magia, pero por lo rápido de todos los acontecimientos, no puede procesarlo e intenta impedir que las hermanas Sanderson le hagan daño a alguien. Además de esto, para hacer la poción para el hechizo Magical Maxima, necesitan ciertos ingredientes y entre ellos, se encuentra la cabeza de un amante. En la primera película, nos cuentan que el susodicho amante de Wini era Billy y que éste la había engañado con su hermana Sara (por eso lo mata), pero en esa oportunidad él no pudo explicar los hechos porque tenía los labios cosidos por un embrujo. Esta vez, cuando es encontrado para hacer el hechizo y ya sin labios cocidos, explica que nunca fue su amante, simplemente fue cuestión de un beso (esto también lo muestra al inicio de esta secuela). Esto nos da a pensar que el hechizo que Wini y sus hermanas quieren hacer, no resultaría, pero creo que no se dieron cuenta de ese pequeño fallo en la historia y continuaron con la trama.

We know what ambition does to ambitious souls, Wini didn't escape that rule, even if they say witches don't have souls. The mother witch warned them when she gave them Libro, and the book itself tried to prevent it, there was a huge warning to achieve the spell: sacrifice what they loved the most, but the sisters ignored it and Wini had to pay the consequences of that atrocious act. When they were finally able to complete the spell, Sara and Mary began to fade away as Wini grew stronger and stronger. As her sisters vanished, it was too late to do anything, no strong magic could bring them back to her side, save one. Beca and her friends conjured it and Wini accepted it as the greatest gift anyone could receive, she would be reunited with her sisters after all, though not on this plane.

Sabemos lo que hace la ambición a las almas ambiciosas, Wini no escapaba de esa norma, aunque digan que las brujas no tienen alma. La madre bruja se los advirtió cuando les regaló a Libro, y el mismo libro intentaba impedirlo, había una advertencia enorme para lograr hacer el hechizo: sacrificar lo que más amaban, pero las hermanas lo ignoraron y Wini tenía que pagar las consecuencias de ese atroz acto. Cuando por fin pudieron completar el hechizo, Sara y Mary empezaron a desvanecerse mientras Wini se volvía más y más fuerte. Al desaparecer sus hermanas, ya era demasiado tarde para hacer algo, ninguna fuerte magia podría regresarlas a su lado, salvo uno. Beca y sus amigas lo conjuraron y Wini lo aceptó como el mayor regalo que alguien podría recibir, se reuniría con sus hermanas después de todo, aunque no en este plano.

A bit of a sad ending, I won't deny it, I cried, but there was no other way. The witches weren't bad at all, or maybe they made them seem so to please, after all it's a family movie, it's almost impossible not to take a liking to them. Also, they are very awkward and have silly fights, I laughed through most of the movie at all the crazy things going on and how the sisters interacted with the modernity of these times. It also gives an air of nostalgia to see that the Sanderson sisters are played by the original actresses. Another interesting detail, is that this second part shows that the costume of the Witch Mother is very similar to that of the girl in the first movie; I remember that in the first part they do talk about the Sanderson sisters, but about the Witch Mother, which makes an interesting detail. The details they used to give "life" to the book, filling so much emotion to your eye was impressive. Many might say that sequels are bad, but there are exceptions as in this case, it is still understandable that this film is not to the liking of many. While I was watching it and getting excited about everything, my husband was with a WTF? face, he never liked this movie and well, I had to get excited on my own. So if you ask me, get your blanket and some sweets, snuggle up, and as I always say: "If you haven't seen it, see it, and if you have already seen it, see it again, you can't miss it at all".

Un final un tanto triste, no lo niego, lloré, pero no había otra forma. Las brujas no eran malas del todo, o tal vez las hicieron parecer así que agradaran, después de todo es una película familiar, es casi imposible no tomarles cariño. Además, son muy torpes y tienen peleas tontas, me reí durante casi toda la película por todas las cosas locas que pasaba y cómo interactuaban las hermanas con la modernidad de estos tiempos. También da un aire de nostalgia al ver que las hermanas Sanderson son interpretadas por las actrices originales. Otro detalle interesante, es que esta segunda parte se ve que la vestimenta de la Madre Bruja es muy parecido a la de la niña que sale en la primera película; recuero que en la primera parte si hablan de las hermanas Sanderson, pero acerca de la Madre Bruja, lo que hace un detalle interesante. Los detalles que usaron para darle “vida” al libro, llenar de tanta emoción a su ojo fue impresionante. Muchos podrían decir que las secuelas son malas, pero hay excepciones como en este caso, igual se entiende que este film no es del agrada de muchos. Mientras la veía y me emocionaba por todo, mi esposo estaba con cara de WTF?, nunca le gustó este película y bueno, me tocó emocionarme sola. Así que si me preguntan, busquen su cobijita y unas chucherías, acurrúquense, y como siempre les digo: “Si no la han visto, véanla, y si ya la vieron, vuélvanla a ver, no tiene pérdida de nada”.
