Plot
The film begins by showing us different settings where the camera focuses on a person—a different woman in each one. We hear them all tell us about a night out they had, a “dream” date with a man named Henry Roth, who, after finishing a date with another girl, returns to Sea Life Park Hawaii on Oahu, where he works as a veterinarian at the park. We learn that his dream is to take a boat trip to where walruses live in order to study them. However, during one expedition, his boat breaks down, so he has to return for help and waits at a café, where he meets a beautiful blonde woman.

Very few movies evoke as much emotion, nostalgia, and fascination in me as this one does. Coincidentally, 50 First Dates is one of the very few Adam Sandler movies that I’ve loved watching countless times since I was a kid. Right around the time it came out, other Sandler movies were released that I also really liked. And I’m not just saying that because of how funny they are—since that’s true of the vast majority of them. I’m saying it because of the story and that blend of romance, comedy, and even a touch of drama that can actually bring a tear to your eye.
That’s what I mean when I say there are very few Sandler movies that evoke such a strong emotional response in me when I watch them, no matter how many times I’ve seen them in the past. The same goes for 50 First Dates—no matter how many times I watch it, I can’t help but get emotional during certain iconic scenes. We’ve seen before that Adam Sandler has a certain talent for drama, but here we don’t see a man suffering because he can’t become a father; instead, we see a sailor suffering because the woman he loves doesn’t remember him.
Muy pocas películas me causan tanta emoción, nostalgia y fascinación como lo hace esta película. Casualmente 50 First Dates es una de las poquísimas películas de Adam Sandler que me ha encantado ver incontables veces desde pequeño. Justamente en la época en la que se estrenó también salieron otras películas de Sandler que también me gustaron bastante. Y no solo lo digo por lo humorísticas que son ya que la gran mayoría ocurre igual. Sino que lo digo por su historia y por esa mezcla de romance con comedia y hasta algo de drama ahí que te llega incluso a sacar alguna lágrima.
A eso es a lo que me refiero con que son muy contadas las películas de Sandler que me generan dicha cantidad de emoción al verlas, sin importar que las haya visto ya incontables veces en el pasado. En el caso de 50 First Dates ocurre igual, no importa cuántas veces la vea, me es imposible no sentirme emocionado en ciertas escenas tan icónicas. He’s a womanizer—of course—who tends to date women who live outside his work area to avoid a more serious relationship. He literally tells us that he doesn’t want to “get tied down” to anyone, since his dream of sailing the open seas prevents him from having a serious relationship with someone of the opposite sex. However, all that changes when he meets the beautiful blonde girl at Café Hukilau. Their first encounter is perfect, fun, and even magical.
However, the next day, when they see each other again, he realizes she doesn’t remember him. Thinking she’s joking, he keeps insisting until a member of the café staff takes him outside and explains the situation. In short, Lucy Whitmore has a serious short-term memory problem and can’t remember anything after the accident that caused it (anterograde amnesia, or as it’s called in the movie, “Goldfield’s syndrome”). Despite her memory issues, our protagonist, Henry Roth, decides to make sure she at least remembers him every day.

Personally, I find the movie’s premise fascinating, since it doesn’t just present the typical love story we’ve seen time and again, but weaves in a memory problem affecting one of the main characters, which leads to a rather fascinating plot twist. The movie starts off one way, but then shifts from its humorous, adult-oriented tone to something more complex as we learn about Lucy’s daily life and how her family copes with her condition. However, the male lead also makes his presence felt by trying to win her heart every day, even though he has nothing to gain from it.
Then everything takes a more serious turn when Lucy discovers one day that she’s losing her memory, and we see her painfully come to terms with it all. Its romantic tone is perfect, as Adam Sandler’s talent for making people laugh comes across perfectly through the character of Henry Roth, even managing to make Lucy fall in love with him a little more each day. Although, it’s true that at times the film’s suggestive, adult-oriented humor does overshadow the romantic moments a bit. Here we also see the great Rob Schneider make an appearance.

This is an American romantic comedy that’s actually worth watching. Or at least that’s what I say, since I’m not only a romantic but I also like to suffer a little while watching movies. That’s why I really loved seeing those dramatic elements in this movie. They make it worth putting up with the movie’s typical adult jokes, which lighten the emotional tension and drama between scenes. The rest of the cast’s performances aren’t too bad either, though there are a few who stand out for being… strange, funny, and very unique.
Something I really like about this movie is how they set this whole love story in a somewhat unique and special place like Hawaii. I’m not very familiar with the place, but watching a romance set in a place like that sounds pretty good—regardless of how it appears, since it’s supposedly a very romantic spot. However, we only get to know the place and little else; we learn almost nothing about the people’s traditions. But that’s okay, since the variety of characters and the pacing of much of the movie more than make up for it.

O bueno, al menos eso digo yo ya que no solo soy un romántico sino que también me gusta sufrir un poco con las películas que veo. Por eso es que ver dichos elementos dramáticos en esta película me encantaron bastante. Hacen que valga la pena aguantar los típicos chistes para adultos que tiene la película y que alivianan la emoción y el drama entre una escena y otra. Las actuaciones del resto del elenco tampoco están tan mal, aunque hay uno que otro que se destacan por ser… extraños, graciosos y muy particulares.
Algo que me gusta mucho de esta película es cómo ambientan toda esta historia de amor en un lugar un tanto único y especial como lo es Hawaii. No soy muy conocedor de ese lugar, pero ver una película de amor ambientada en un sitio así suena bastante bien, indiferentemente de lo que parece ya que es un sitio muy romántico, según. Sin embargo, sólo conocemos el lugar y poco más, no conocemos casi nada de las tradiciones de la gente. Pero igual no hace falta ya que lo compensa muy bien la variedad de personajes y el ritmo que tiene gran parte de la película.

I might be exaggerating a little with what I’m about to say, but I actually really like this story—mostly because of what it conveys to us in the end. There are a few lines spoken at the end that really touched my heart because of their meaning. Sometimes, no matter how much we accomplish in life, life itself snatches everything away from us in an act of cruelty. However, when we’re with the right person, we manage to find meaning in life and keep moving forward. No matter what happens, how many years go by, or what we may forget, life is enjoyed in the present.
50 First Dates teaches us that we shouldn’t worry about the hardships of the past or the anxieties of the future; rather, the most important thing is to make the present a day that’s impossible to forget. The film also features one of the most remarkable displays of unconditional love in the story of Henry Roth, as we see him transform from his usual womanizing ways to completely changing his life plan and dreams just to be with the love of his life. Perhaps the message here is that no one changes until that ideal person comes along who manages to “light up” your life, but here we see it in a rather special way.
Puede que exagere un poco con lo que les voy a decir, pero en realidad me gusta mucho esta historia, más que nada por lo que logra transmitirnos al final. There are also a few pretty iconic and unforgettable scenes in this movie, such as the scene of their first meeting, which is even portrayed in the movie itself in a pretty funny way. The sound effects aren’t bad either, but they’re nothing compared to the film’s soundtrack.
Personally, I give it a rating of 8.5/10 as far as the comedy and romance genres are concerned.

Los efectos de sonido tampoco están mal, pero nada comparado con la banda sonora que tiene esta película.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de comedia y romance.
