Plot
The anime begins by introducing us to Yoi Yakiguchi, a high school student who looks more like a boy. Her first appearance takes place on a train, where she defends a female student from a harasser and is mistaken for a boy—whether because of her haircut, her height, or her somewhat masculine appearance. Because of this, she’s known at school as “the Prince.” However, Yoi isn’t the only person at this school with that nickname; another student named Kohaku Ichimura is also called “Prince.” During their first striking encounter, Kohaku mistakes Yoi for a boy.

As you just read above, this anime attracted attention at the time because of its protagonist’s striking appearance and how she’s introduced to us at the beginning. We already know that it’s a shōjo anime—that is, aimed at a teenage female audience—and we can see this in the striking appearance of the “attractive” male characters. However, being introduced to a girl—a woman—with this kind of appearance is a bit unsettling at first, since you don’t know what direction this anime will take.
But I’m here to tell you that you have nothing to worry about, since this anime has all the teenage romance we’re so used to discussing and seeing in this space. From the very first episode—with Yoi Yakiguchi’s encounter with Kohaku Ichimura—to the way she confesses her feelings and what follows afterward, it’s a clear example of a teenage love story that aims to be a bit “special” for obvious reasons.

Desde ya sabemos que es un anime Shōjo, o sea, dirigido a un público adolescente femenino y esto lo podemos notar con la notable apariencia de los protagonistas a personajes masculinos “atractivos”. Sin embargo, que nos presenten a una chica, una mujer con esta apariencia es algo que preocupa un poco al principio ya que no sabes qué dirección tendrá este anime.
Sin embargo, aquí estoy yo para decirles que no tienen de qué preocuparse, ya que este anime contiene toda esa dosis de romance adolescente que tanto estamos acostumbrados a hablar y ver en este espacio. Desde el primer episodio con el encuentro que tiene Yoi Yakiguchi con Kohaku Ichimura hasta la forma en la que se le declara y lo que sigue después de esto es una clara demostración de una historia de amor adolescente que busca ser un tanto “especial” debido a evidentes razones.

One of those reasons is the main character, Yoi, who—unlike the vast majority of female and lead characters in teen romance anime—stands out not only because of her “masculine” appearance, but also because of her personality. She is forced to take on the role of “Prince” in front of others, helping and being generous toward the other girls at her school. The craziest part is that, even though everyone knows she’s actually a woman, Yoi constantly receives compliments and even love confessions from other girls at her school.
The key point to highlight here is the problem stemming from the fact that Yoi has accepted a role she ultimately doesn’t want to play. She is a woman—a girl with feelings and emotions very typical of any other teenager. However, all of this is suppressed by a prejudiced society that categorizes and labels others with titles and treats her in a way she ultimately doesn’t like. Una de esas razones es la protagonista, quien a diferencia de la gran mayoría de personajes femeninos y principales en todo anime de romance adolescente, Yoi se diferencia bastante no solo por su apariencia “masculina”. Sino también por su personalidad, adoptando por obligación el papel de “Príncipe” ante los demás ayudando y siendo generosa con las demás chicas de su escuela. Lo más loco es que, aún sabiendo que en realidad es mujer, Yoi recibe siempre halagos y hasta confesiones de amor de otras chicas de su escuela.
El detalle a destacar de todo esto es el problema que radica el que Yoi haya aceptado asumir un papel que no le gusta ser al final. Es una mujer, una chica con sentimientos y emociones muy típicos de cualquier otra adolescente. Then Kohaku Ichimura arrives, making a rather striking and unforgettable appearance in the anime’s first episode. At first, his manner toward Yoi Yakiguchi is brusque and direct, lacking any tact. But unlike the others, he notices something that no other man has noticed or acknowledged about our protagonist: that she’s a beautiful girl. Even with her masculine features, voice, haircut, and appearance, Kohaku sees Yoi as a beautiful—and even attractive—woman at heart. They start out as friends, then start dating and all that. It has some really funny moments, but it’s clear that comedy isn’t its strongest point—unlike the romance, for example.
Yoi Yakiguchi’s personality is striking because she doesn’t seem to be what she actually turns out to be throughout the series. The contrast between her true personality and the persona she puts on for others at school is quite interesting. And even though she has the look of a typical, generic male lead, there are moments in the anime where we see her shine as the beautiful woman she is. On the other hand, Kohaku Ichimura is everything you’d expect from a rebellious, shameless guy from a millionaire family in this anime.

His recklessness, stubbornness, and the way he treats Yoi show what kind of male character Kohaku is, which can come across as a bit cliché at times. It’s true that they do give him some character development by showing us a little about his family life, part of his past, and his trust issues. But in the end, he doesn’t stand out as much as any other male character in these romance animes aimed at girls would. One thing I do like about this anime, at least, is that Yoi and Kohaku’s relationship develops significantly and evolves into something more.
Last but not least, let’s talk about the audiovisual aspects of this anime. While it doesn’t have the top-notch animation of other romance animes I’ve covered earlier this season, it does maintain a fairly acceptable level of quality and detail. At the very least, the art style and character designs are very well done, especially since they manage to highlight each main character’s gender and facial features in some way. Additionally, the vibrant color palette and the use of light and shadow aren’t bad either.
In fact, the anime makes heavy use of these visual effects to highlight its various romantic moments. It doesn’t have the same level of fluidity as some popular anime in this genre, but it manages to maintain its level of detail in most scenes, without straying too far or resorting to “chibi” art styles or animations, for example. The shots, environments, and details are top-notch, as are the sound effects. Well, I’m not going to lie—I always prefer the soundtrack over the sound effects, but honestly, it doesn’t really matter here.
Personally, I give it a rating of 8.5/10 as far as the romance genre is concerned.
Su imprudencia, terquedad y forma de tratar a Yoi demuestra el tipo de personaje masculino que es Kohaku, lo cual llega a ser un tanto cliché a veces. Si es cierto que le meten algo de desarrollo al personaje al mostrarnos un poco sobre su vida familiar, parte de su pasado y sus problemas de confianza. Pero al final no llega a destacarse tanto como lo haría cualquier otro personaje masculino de estos animes de romance para chicas. Algo que me agrada por lo menos de este anime es que la relación que tienen Yoi con Kohaku tiene un notable desarrollo y mejora a algo más.
Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos del apartado audiovisual que tiene este anime. Si bien no tiene una gran animación como otros animes de romance que ya les había traído antes de esta temporada, sí mantiene una calidad y nivel de detalles bastante aceptables. Por lo menos el estilo de dibujo y el diseño de los personajes están muy bien hechos, sobre todo porque logra destacar de alguna forma el género y los rasgos faciales de cada personaje principal. Además, la paleta de colores vivos y el uso de luces y sombras tampoco están mal.
Es más, el anime utiliza mucho dichos efectos visuales para resaltar los diferentes momentos románticos que tiene. No posee una fluidez tan excelente como lo pueden llegar a tener algunos animes populares de este género, pero logra mantener su calidad de detalles en la mayoría de escenas, sin desviarse mucho ni utilizando estilos de dibujo o animaciones “chibi”, por ejemplo. Los planos, entornos y detalles son de lo mejor, al igual que lo son los efectos de sonido que tiene. Nah, quién le engaño si siempre prefiero la banda sonora antes que los efectos de sonido, pero aquí da igual, sinceramente.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de romance.
