Plot
The film opens with an aerial view of the cold, towering Mount Everest, where we see a team of climbers attempting to reach the summit. However, due to a severe storm, they are unable to continue and inform billionaire Preston Blake of the situation. In his stubbornness and madness, he decides to press on, even if it means going alone. Upon reaching the summit of the massive mountain, he freezes to death, and his body is transported by plane while a news channel shows us everything and reports on the event. His company, Blake Media, faces uncertainty about its future, as its owner died without leaving a will.

This is one of those Adam Sandler movies that I don’t always remember or recommend because I didn’t think it was as entertaining as it actually is. However, after giving it one last chance before writing this, I realized why I felt it was different from the vast majority of movies I’ve seen in my life starring this great actor. The main reason is the film’s sense of humor, which isn’t all that different from the rest of Sandler’s filmography—except that it isn’t as adult-oriented as one might expect.
Despite being produced by Sandler’s production company in partnership with New Line Cinema and distributed by Columbia Pictures, Mr. Deeds honestly feels more like a Disney movie from that era. Maybe it’s because it’s a remake of a 1930s film, or simply because the plot itself doesn’t present a protagonist who embodies certain traits of a typical American man from that era. You know, the typical drunk, womanizing guy, and so on. Although that could apply to any kind of protagonist from any country, it’s interesting that this pattern is only repeated in Hollywood.
Esta es una de esas películas de Adam Sandler que no siempre llego a recordar o recomendar debido a que no me parecía tan entretenida como realmente lo es. Sin embargo, luego de darle una última oportunidad antes de escribir esto supe la razón del por qué sentía que es diferente a la gran mayoría de películas que he visto en mi vida de este grandioso actor. La razón principal es el tipo de humor que posee la película, la cual no es muy diferente a cualquiera de toda la filmografía de Sandler, solamente que su tipo de humor no es tan para adultos como uno esperaría.
A pesar de ser una película hecha por la productora de Sandler junto con New Line Cinema y distribuida por Columbia Pictures, Mr. Deeds parece más una película de Disney de aquella época, sinceramente. Tal vez y sea porque es un remake de una cinta de los años 30 o simplemente porque la misma trama no nos ofrece a un protagonista que nos den ciertos aspectos de un típico hombre estadounidense de aquella época. Ya saben, típico hombre borracho, mujeriego, etc. Aunque eso se puede aplicar para cualquier tipo de protagonista de cualquier país, es curioso que solo se repita este patrón en Hollywood.

But anyway, setting aside the issue of the main character, the rest of the movie is also quite entertaining. Mostly because of its plot involving a relative of a billionaire who owns a huge American company. The hour-and-a-half-long film is basically about a kind-hearted man who becomes a millionaire out of nowhere and travels to New York City, where he falls in love with a woman who later cheats on him because of her job as a journalist. It doesn’t sound as bad as it seems; in fact, it’s quite entertaining with its funny moments and unique characters.
What caught my attention the most was Adam Sandler’s performance in this movie. It’s not his best by any means, but it’s somewhat special because of the personality he takes on in this story. We see that the role of Longfellow Deeds is somewhat special—not because he’s mentally challenged or a thirty-something acting like a child or a homeless person, but because he’s more like a kind, hardworking man who isn’t interested in money or possessions and really enjoys helping people. His positive, friendly, and gentle attitude toward everyone is even funny.
Pero bueno, dejando de lado el tema del protagonista, el resto de la película también es bastante entretenida. Más que nada por su trama relacionada con un familiar de un multimillonario y dueño de una enorme empresa estadounidense. La hora y media de película trata prácticamente de un hombre bondadoso que se convierte en millonario de la nada y viaja a la ciudad de Nueva York donde se enamora de una mujer que luego lo engaña debido a su trabajo de periodismo. No suena tan mal como parece, es más, entretiene bastante con sus momentos graciosos y sus personajes tan particulares.
Lo que más me llamó la atención fue la actuación que hace Adam Sandler en esta película. No es la mejor de todas, ni de lejos, pero es un tanto especial debido a la personalidad que asume en esta historia. Vemos que el papel de Longfellow Deeds es un tanto especial, no porque sea un retrasado o un treintañero actuando como un niño o un vagabundo, sino porque es más como un hombre bondadoso, trabajador, desinteresado por el dinero y las posesiones y que le gusta mucho ayudar a la gente. Su actitud positiva, amable y apacible con todo el mundo es hasta gracioso.

Más que nada porque lo vemos relacionarse con gente poderosa, gente millonaria de Nueva York que ven a nuestro protagonista como un ignorante, un idiota, un hazmerreír. Esto se debe mayormente a la malicia que se superpone entre esta sociedad de gente orgullosa, importante, millonaria y egoísta. El objetivo principal de esta película es evidente al notar cómo pintan a la gente de esta gran ciudad que vista Deeds. Vemos cómo lo tratan, se burlan de él, lo humillan y lo engañan una y otra vez por gente que apenas llega a conocer y los trata como si fueran sus mejores amigos.

There’s also a touch of romance throughout much of the plot, although it unfolds in a way that’s different from what we’re used to seeing in other romantic comedies. To avoid any spoilers, I’ll just say that the relationship between Longfellow Deeds and Babe Bennett is both questionable and, in its own way, special. The movie doesn’t set out to teach us any profound lessons, much less provide dramatic moments that make us think. It’s a movie that’s meant, more than anything, to pass the time—just switch off your brain and enjoy it.
However, it’s hard to ignore all the narrative details in the movie itself. But hey, at least most of it makes sense, and the various characters we meet are entertaining in their own way. There are a few supporting characters who manage to stand out from the crowd due to various somewhat striking and even strange traits. The great thing about these Adam Sandler movies is that they always offer us a variety of funny and unique characters in different styles. They also have a knack for throwing in absurd scenes every so often that are just plain hilarious.

Para no darles ningún spoiler solo diré que dicha relación que tiene Longfellow Deeds con Babe Bennett es tanto dudosa como a su vez especial, de alguna forma u otra. La película no busca darnos ninguna lección profunda ni mucho menos momentos dramáticos que nos pongan a pensar. Es una película que sirve más que nada para pasar el tiempo, desconectando tu cerebro para disfrutarla y ya.
Sin embargo, es difícil ignorar todos los detalles narrativos que tiene la misma película. Pero bueno, al menos llega a tener sentido en su mayoría y los diferentes personajes que conocemos también entretienen a su manera. Hay uno que otro personaje secundario que logra destacarse por sobre la mayoría debido a diversas características un tanto llamativas y hasta extrañas. Lo bueno de estas películas de Adam Sandler es que siempre nos ofrece una variedad de personajes graciosos y únicos en diferentes estilos. También tiene ese detalle de cada ciertos momentos darnos escenas tan absurdas que solo dan risa.

As for the ending, I don’t have much to say either, since most of Adam Sandler’s comedy movies have this trademark of giving us a conclusion that elevates the moment and wraps everything up in such an absurd way that there’s no point in overthinking it. Although I did actually like the way it tied up certain details at the end, to be honest. On the other hand, as for the audiovisual aspects, there isn’t much to talk about either, aside from the views of New York City and little else.
It makes me laugh how they show us the small, rural town where our protagonist is from, as well as how the rich people are visually distinguished from the rest of the ordinary folks—and the protagonist, too. The cinematography is good, as is the use of light, shadow, and the color palette. The film doesn’t have any particularly striking visuals or many special effects worth highlighting. Most of what we see throughout the film is practical, and it’s not bad. The sound effects are decent too, though you know I always prefer the soundtrack.
Personally, I'd give it a 7.5 out of 10 as far as the comedy and romance genres are concerned.
En cuanto a su final, tampoco tengo mucho qué decir ya que la mayoría de películas de comedia de Adam Sandler tienen ese distintivo de darnos un cierre al final que eleva el momento y concluye con todo de una manera tan absurda que no tiene sentido darle vueltas. Aunque parte de la manera en la que concluye ciertos detalles al final sí me agradaron, la verdad. Por otro lado, en cuanto a su apartado audiovisual tampoco hay mucho de qué hablar, aparte de las vistas de la ciudad de Nueva York y poco más.
Me da risa cómo nos muestran el pequeño y rural pueblo de donde se origina nuestro protagonista, además de ver cómo se diferencian visualmente la gente rica con el resto de personas comunes y el protagonista también. La fotografía está bien, al igual que el uso de luces, sombras y la paleta de colores. La película no tiene grandes planos visuales ni tampoco muchos efectos especiales a resaltar. Todo lo que vemos en gran parte de la misma es práctico y no está mal. Los efectos de sonido también están decentes, aunque saben que siempre prefiero la banda sonora.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 7.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de comedia y romance.
