Hello, anime fans. Today I’m here to bring you the latest RomCom anime from this past winter season that I’ll be reviewing. Just another run-of-the-mill anime with nothing more to offer than the typical teenage love story we’ve seen a million times, with a bit of mystery but almost no drama. Based on the manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Masakuni Igarachi, Tune in to the Midnight Heart is an animated adaptation produced by Gekkou studio. Hola, fanáticos del anime. En esta ocasión les vengo a traer el último anime RomCom del cual les pienso reseñar de la pasada temporada de invierno de este año. Un anime genérico más del montón que no tiene más que ofrecer que la típica historia de amor adolescente de siempre, con algo de misterio, pero sin casi nada de drama de por medio. Basada en la serie de manga homónima escrita e ilustrada por Masakuni Igarachi, Tune in to the Midnight Heart es una adaptación animada producida por el estudio Gekkou. Plot
The anime begins by introducing us to our protagonist, Arisu Yamabuchi, a dedicated high school student determined to find a girl his own age who used to host radio shows under the alias “Apollo.” Arisu uses somewhat unconventional methods to find the girl of his dreams—as he does on his first day of high school, when he manages to catch the attention of every girl in his class. But no matter how many girls talk to him, he can’t identify the one he’s looking for. Or so he thinks—until he suddenly runs into the members of the school’s broadcasting club: Shinobu Uzuki, Iko Kirino, Nene Himekawa, and Rikka Inohana.

El anime inicia presentándonos a nuestro protagonista, Arisu Yamabuchi, un estudiante de preparatoria dedicado y decidido a buscar a una mujer, una chica de su edad que solía hacer transmisiones de radio con el alias de “Apollo”. Arisu utiliza métodos un tanto particulares para encontrar a su chica soñada, como hace al presentarse en su primer día de preparatoria donde logra llamar la atención de todas las mujeres de su clase. Pero sin importar la cantidad de chicas que le hablan, no logra identificar a la que está buscando. O eso cree hasta que de repente se encuentra con las miembros del club de radiodifusión de la escuela: Shinobu Uzuki, Iko Kirino, Nene Himekawa y Rikka Inohana.

To be honest, I didn't expect to write a review of this anime—not because I don't like it or because it's bad per se, but simply because I got tired of talking about the typical, generic RomCom animes that have nothing new to offer. These kinds of animes are extremely common these days, appearing in every season. Very occasionally, one or two catch your attention—either because they have something interesting to offer or simply because of their excellent animation. However, in the case of the anime I’m reviewing today, none of that applies. Still, here’s my review because it did entertain me at first.
Tune In to the Midnight Heart is nothing more than a run-of-the-mill RomCom anime with the typical protagonist who ends up with a Harem of girls from his own high school, and over the course of its 12 episodes, we watch them gradually fall in love with him as they spend time together. There’s nothing particularly noteworthy about it, aside from its female character designs, its all-over-the-place romantic premise, a slight touch of mystery, and—of course—its Fanservice. Perhaps that’s what makes this anime appealing: it’s made for a teenage audience that just wants to watch the same old stuff, period.
Si les soy sincero, no esperaba hacerle una reseña a este anime, no porque no me guste o sea mala como tal, sino porque simplemente me cansé de hablar de los típicos animes RomCom genéricos y sin nada nuevo que contarnos. Este tipo de animes son de lo más comunes de ver actualmente en todas las temporadas. Muy de vez en cuando llama la atención uno que otro ya sea porque tiene algo interesante por contarnos o simplemente por su excelente animación. Sin embargo, en el caso del anime que les traigo hoy no ocurre nada de eso. Aún así, aquí está mi reseña debido a que me entretuvo al principio.
Tune In to the Midnight Heart no es más que un anime RomCom del montón con el típico protagonista que se consigue a un Harem de chicas que de su misma escuela preparatoria y que con el paso de los 12 episodios que dura las vemos enamorarse poco a poco de él mientras pasan tiempo juntos. No tiene nada que destaque, más allá que su diseño de personajes femeninos, su premisa toda romántica y un pequeño toque de misterio y su Fanservice, por supuesto. Tal vez y lo atractivo de este anime sea eso, que está hecho para un público de adolescentes que solo buscan ver lo mismo de siempre y ya.

I’m not going to lie—the first episode definitely caught my attention, obviously, because otherwise I wouldn’t have even watched it all the way through. The way Arisu Yamabuchi introduces himself to the entire class on his first day of school by telling all the girls, “Say ‘I love you’ to me,” is absolutely hilarious. With that introduction to the protagonist, we can at least expect to see a main character who’s only generic in appearance. His personality is a bit different from what we’re used to seeing—he’s confident and has his whole life planned out.
Arisu not only strives to be the best and uphold his family’s name, but he also seeks to resolve any issues, relationships, or feelings from his past—such as his connection to “Apollo,” the mysterious radio host he used to listen to back in middle school. Unable to find the girl behind that unmistakable voice he’s been searching for all this time, Arisu decides to resort to unconventional methods. Whether by a stroke of luck or simply by the script, he runs into the four girls who are part of the school’s broadcasting club.
No voy a mentir al decir que su primer episodio sí me llamó la atención, obviamente, ya que sino ni la hubiera visto completa. La forma en la que Arisu Yamabuchi se presenta frente a todo el salón de su escuela en su primer día de clases diciéndoles a todas las chicas “dígame ‘te amo’”, es absolutamente gracioso. Ya con dicha presentación que nos hacen del protagonista podemos al menos tener en cuenta que veremos a un personaje principal que solo es genérico por apariencia nomás. Su personalidad es un tanto diferente a lo que estamos acostumbrados a ver, alguien confiado y con toda una vida planeada.
Arisu no solo busca ser el mejor y dejar el nombre de su familia en alto, sino que también busca solucionar cualquier tema, relación o sentimiento que ha tenido en su pasado, como lo es el caso de “Apollo”, la misteriosa locutora de radio que siempre escuchaba cuando estaba en secundaria. Al no conseguir encontrarse con la chica que está detrás de esa voz tan inconfundible que busca Arisu todo el tiempo, decide recurrir a métodos poco convencionales. Por un acto de suerte o el mismo guión, se encuentra con las cuatro chicas que forman parte del club de radiodifusión de la escuela.

His quest now boils down to identifying which of the four girls he’s barely gotten to know in this club is the one behind “Apollo.” To do this, he decides to join the club and help each of them achieve their respective goals or dreams. And that’s pretty much what we see in the rest of this anime’s episodes: our protagonist helping each of them improve and become more “professional” in their respective fields. We see the typical awkward moments, the typical misunderstandings, and the typical jokes found in every classic Harem RomCom anime.
We could even say that the female characters who are part of the broadcasting club are also characters we could easily recognize in any other teen romance anime. There’s the typical “tsundere” girl, the one who spends her time sleeping or making funny faces, the one who pretends to have a personality she doesn’t really have, and the one who’s the group’s leader. While it seems like they’re trying to develop each of these club members, in reality, we don’t get to see anything beyond the same old stuff.
Su búsqueda se reduce ahora a identificar cuál de las cuatro chicas que apenas ha llegado a conocer de este club es la que está detrás de “Apollo”. Para lograr esto, decide unirse al club y ayudarlas a cada una a lograr sus respectivos objetivos o sueños. Y prácticamente es eso lo que llegamos a ver en el resto de episodios que tiene este anime: a nuestro protagonista ayudando a cada una a mejorar y volverse más “procesionales” en sus respectivos campos. Vemos los típicos momentos incómodos, los típicos malentendidos, los típicos chistes que se usan en todo anime RomCom con Harem de siempre.
Incluso podemos decir que los personajes femeninos que forman parte del club de radiodifusión son también personajes que fácilmente podemos identificar en cualquier otro anime de romance adolescente. Está la típica chica catalogada como “tsundere”, la otra que se la pasa durmiendo o haciendo caras graciosas, la otra que simula una personalidad que no es realmente y la otra que es la líder del grupo. Si bien pareciera que nos buscan desarrollar a cada una de estas integrantes del club, en realidad no llegamos a ver nada más allá que lo mismo de siempre.

There’s also the fact that, even with all the backstories, pasts, and personal issues each member of the broadcasting club has, all of that ends up taking a back seat when we see them fall in love with the protagonist. Honestly, it doesn’t seem like the writers and manga artists behind RomCom anime even try to give us something a little more authentic—something that isn’t so predictable and repetitive. At least it’s entertaining, since that mix of teenage humor and romance is something I always end up enjoying in an anime, so I’m not really in a position to criticize.
Last but not least, let’s talk about the audiovisual aspects of this anime. The studio behind this animation isn’t one I have much confidence in, but at least here they managed to deliver a pretty decent result. This is especially true when it comes to the character designs, which really stand out—particularly those of the girls in the broadcasting club. On the other hand, the cool, somewhat intense color palette also stands out, along with the fight scenes and the shadows. The anime isn’t exactly smooth, but at least it makes good use of what little it has.
También está el hecho de que, aún con todas las historias, los pasados y los problemas personales que tengan cada miembro del club de radiodifusión, todo esto termina quedándose a un segundo plano cuando las vemos enamorarse del protagonista. Es que, de verdad, no parece que los escritores y mangakas de animes RomCom siquiera se esfuerzan en darnos algo un poco más auténtico no tan predecible y repetitivo. Al menos es entretenido, como mínimo, ya que esa mezcla de humor adolescente con romance es algo que siempre me termina gustando de un anime, así que tampoco soy nadie para andar criticando.
Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos ahora del apartado audiovisual que tiene este anime. El estudio a cargo de esta animación no es una que me traiga mucha confianza, pero al menos aquí lograron darnos un resultado bastante decente. Sobre todo en lo que respecta al diseño de los personajes, los cuales llaman mucho la atención, sobre todo el de las chicas del club de radiodifusión. Por otro lado, la paleta de colores fríos y un poco intensos destacan también junto con las luchas y las sombras. El anime no tendrá una gran fluidez que digamos, pero al menos trabaja bien con lo poco que tienen.

The visual effects also stand out in their own way, especially during emotional, romantic, and other such moments. You know, we’re talking about those typical scenes where we barely see any movement in the character animation, just the occasional background lighting effect and some lighting above the characters to make those scenes “special.” But anyway, they manage to be somewhat enjoyable despite the completely predictable plot and the somewhat generic characters. The sound effects also stand out a bit, though don’t expect too much from the soundtrack either.
Personally, I give it a 7.5/10 as far as the romance and comedy genre goes.
Los efectos visuales también destacan a su manera, sobre todo en momentos emotivos, románticos y demás. Ya saben, estamos hablando de esas típicss escenas donde apenas vemos algún movimiento en la animación de los personajes y uno que otro efecto de luz de fondo y por encima de los personajes para hacer de dichas escenas “especiales”. Pero bueno, también logran ser un tanto digeribles junto con su trama toda predecible y sus personajes un tanto genéricos que tiene. Los efectos de sonido también destacan un poco, aunque no esperemos mucho tampoco de la banda sonora.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 7.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de romance y comedia.
