“Relationship on the edge.”
“Story of Wife kills Husband.”
Might sound stereotypical as any murder mystery movie with two big hints already been given away. But if you agree with them, it is not the movie but its YOU who’s being stereotypical.
This scene pretty much sums it up. The wife caught the husband taking photo of a young girl jogging. At least from the wife’s perspective.
A judgemental lot might just call the old man a pervert but someone else might just see him taking a photo of the kids at the background.
Erin (Maya Karin) might just pushed Kamal (Hans Isaac) over the edge but how that happened was not shown. It is the same as the pervert old man case. How the film makes you think. A general crowd will say “See! I told you so!” while some others might say “Wait a minute”.
The same at the beginning of the 12 Angry Men where 99% were sure the boy was guilty but upon questioning the seen evidence they found the unseen that brought the opposite verdict.
Especially when it comes into relationship where it is so easy to conclude based on very little thing that you see. How the society standard of judgement and how it has been indoctrinated by the mass media. Going with the majority is easy but not against it.
How you take this film will reflect back on you.
Spoiler Zone
It is easy to say Erin pushed Kamal over the edge (literally) instead of seeing that Kamal and Mayumi (Rin Izumi) has been planning for a perfect Erin suicide.
The suicide note is Erin’s made by Kamal and Mayumi.
“Demi kebahagianmu, rela ku berkorban.”
Does not sound right if its for Kamal. He is succesful in making Mayumi pregnant and both of them has a future together, although knowing a playful character of Mayumi, the baby might not have been Kamal’s. It is however sounds like a perfect motive for Erin and her inability to conceive.
Or is that Kamal’s baby in Mayumi? Mayumi is a player and collect relationship trophies. She loves to see couples destroyed because of her. Erin does ovulate anyways so Kamal might be the barren one.
In the beginning of the film, Kamal hands were shown covered in blood whilst Erin could not even kill a butterfly.
The beach phone call was just in Erin’s head. Just like how she hit Kamal, how she thought Kamal turns around and talk to her and the vision of Jemat (Ramli Hassan) telling the story about the husband’s food poisoning.
Kamal would not have walked in front of Erin anymore knowing she can stab him at the back anytime. But Kamal is shown as if he has no clue.
The viewer has been led to think so by the change on Erin’s facial expressions. She is now convinced that Kamal has cheated on her and bound for a pay back.
My take is Kamal was caught by surprise and got pushed by Erin. There would’ve been a scene where he fell down a villain’s death in slow motion with his facial expression of guilt and regret.
But that would have been too easy.
Erin went on a rampage to destroy all the ‘buaya’ including Jemat and Mayumi (yes, female buaya). And Erin now has became Jemat the Buaya hunter.
The first scene of the film shows a relatively calm water surface. “Air yang tenang jangan disangka tiada buaya”. The film poster showing Erin’s face in a state of suffering and confused, while looking straight at the viewer asking if we are Erin, Kamal, Mayumi or Jemat?
For the local release, Erin paid for it and got behind bars but for international release, Erin got free. Personally I think the international release opens the film more into interpretations although it is hard for Erin to escape from a Nasi Lemak poisoning case on Mayumi. (Or maybe shaved bamboo sting aren’t just traceable...). In the local release ending, Erin looks psychotic as if she is seeing things. That would support the theory that she has everything only in her head.
This is just the surface of what the film is. Read on Pak Hassan Muthalib take on it and see how underrated this film is.
