This is a movie that will make you cry until you're dry; I warn you, this story will touch your heart. Don't worry, there are no spoilers here. I just want to let you know that true love exists and can only be experienced with your beloved pet.
Directed by David Frankel and starring Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston, "Marley & Me" (2008) presents itself as a romantic comedy about a newly married couple who adopt a mischievous puppy named Marley. With that premise in mind, it's normal to think: "Oh, a light comedy about an adorable dog and a young couple." And yes, during its first half, the movie exactly fulfills that promise.
But what begins as a series of gags about chewed shoes and ruined furniture slowly transforms into one of the most honest stories about the inevitable passage of time and the development of married life. The central focus of the film revolves around the concept of unconditional love. It’s an adventure that uses the companionship of an unpredictable pet you can’t control, but whose unconditional love is always present.
What’s fascinating about "Marley & Me" is that the dog functions as a supporting character; Marley is the thread running through the lives of John and Jenny Grogan. Some couples adopt pets and treat them like the children they might someday have together, like "practicing" caregiving, but I believe the responsibilities of a dog cannot be compared to those of a baby or child. Taking care of a dog is no easy task, especially if it can’t behave.
Marley becomes part of their relationship to teach the lesson that life is never perfect and will always have unexpected moments, but as long as you have the company of loved ones, that will be the least of your worries.
In this movie, you see the Grogans face work frustrations, marital crises, and the process of trying to have children. Their beloved Marley is there in every fight, every tear shed, and every reconciliation. And nothing more, he simply exists to love without reservation.
What makes this film so emotional is its inevitable ending. If you have a dog or were ever lucky enough to share your life with one, you know that the responsibility of caring includes the guarantee of sharp pain.
The film does not shy away from aging. It’s impossible not to cry at the decline of things; we are crying for all the joy that was experienced and that unfortunately comes to an end.
"Marley & Me" is an emotional trap that makes us reflect in a good way about the friends we have close by. The film makes you laugh out loud only to then make you vulnerable. It’s a remarkable reminder that perfection is overrated and can be boring when it should be quite the opposite. Marley, in his imperfection, gives his family exactly what they needed.
At the end of the day, when there’s nothing fun left to do, a clean house and intact furniture mean nothing compared to a life full of love. No matter how chaotic it is, it is worth living.
