After the enormous box-office success of Avengers: Endgame, Marvel Studios decided to continue expanding this cinematic universe through other media. Thus, the television series "WandaVision" was born, marking a turning point in the MCU’s new direction by opening a narrative arc centered around the Maximoff family.

Review

This story, like many others, began with the tragedy seen in Avengers: Infinity War. In order to obtain the Mind Stone, Thanos killed Vision, leaving Wanda devastated. In her misery and loneliness, she entered a state of denial, using her powers over a town called Westview to live in a false reality where she was happily married to Vision. In that world, they magically had two children.

The fairy tale did not last long, as Wanda had to face the consequences of her actions and confront a reality in which her beloved Vision was no longer by her side. Unfortunately, the pain of losing her children led her down a dark path, causing her to become the antagonist of the film "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" (2022).

Wanda Maximoff’s story came to a painful end when, in order to atone for her sins, she took her own life—or so it appeared. Although she is presumed dead, it is most likely that she remains alive in some unknown form. Nevertheless, even though Wanda is no longer directly involved in the story, the arc she began has continued to develop through other characters.

To understand VisionQuest, it is necessary to have a clear understanding of everything that has happened so far in this arc, which I call “The Maximoff Family.” So let us go back to the events of WandaVision to understand every piece of the puzzle.

Two of the key characters—and the protagonists of the following series—are Agatha Harkness and White Vision.

Agatha appears in WandaVision pretending to be one of the many people trapped under Wanda’s mental control in Westview. However, she is actually a witch with mystical powers who intended to steal the Scarlet Witch’s abilities. She was the series’ antagonist and was defeated by Wanda, who left her brainwashed into believing she was an ordinary woman. That changed in the series "Agatha All Along" (2024).

After Wanda’s death and the appearance of a mysterious young man, Agatha remembers who she truly is and devises an evil plan to regain her powers. This adventure is very extensive, and the goal here is not to summarize the series. The important thing to keep in mind is that the mysterious young man surprisingly turns out to be one of Wanda’s sons: Billy Maximoff. He apparently inherited some of his mother’s mystical powers and used them to escape the false reality in which he had been created by entering the body of a young man who had died near the town. Once Billy discovered his true identity, he decided to search for the members of his family, hoping they might still be out there somewhere.

And it is in this new series that the last members of the Maximoff family finally appear after going unnoticed for several years. You see, Vision died in Avengers: Infinity War, but his remains—in other words, his corpse—were repurposed by S.W.O.R.D., an organization similar to S.H.I.E.L.D., in an attempt to bring him back to life. However, this new version of Vision was reborn completely white, since he no longer possessed the Mind Stone.

In "WandaVision", after confronting the version of himself created by Wanda, he questioned his own identity, using the Ship of Theseus paradox as an example. At one point, the original Vision managed to upload his memories into White Vision in order to preserve his identity. The last time the new Vision was seen, he escaped public attention.

And in "VisionQuest", this new Vision will encounter Tommy Maximoff—the other son who had yet to appear. As you can see, this is not a series that can be understood without prior context. I would even dare say that this story will be the culmination of this narrative arc centered around the Maximoff family. And with Avengers: Doomsday just around the corner, the reboot of the MCU is inevitable. So I cannot help but wonder what Marvel Studios intends to do with all of this.

The future of the MCU appears to be focused on giving prominence to mutants—quite literally, that is the name of the next saga. It is still unknown what will happen to all the characters who have been built up throughout this great story over nearly two decades, but it seems to me that this project is intended to bring this arc to a close, preventing another inconsistency or unresolved storyline from being left behind.

It is incredible to see that WandaVision has had more repercussions than most of the series and films produced by Marvel Studios in recent years since Endgame. If the entire Maximoff family—including Wanda—ultimately appears in Avengers: Secret Wars, then I think this trilogy of series will have been worthwhile.

Now, focusing on this first episode: We get to know this new Vision in an introspective and entertaining way. Through a digital simulation within his own mind, we are introduced personally to many of the artificial intelligences created by the late Tony Stark. Although they have only appeared as a recognizable voice in several films, it is delightful to see them return now as characters with faces. Among them, we can recognize J.A.R.V.I.S., the virtual assistant inside Iron Man’s armor.

But the most interesting part is the return of one of the Avengers’ classic villains. Apparently, Ultron never died; instead, he was imprisoned in a digital prison until the present day. This former enemy is responsible for the conflict in the series, as he drew the attention of a bounty hunter who will stop at nothing to capture Vision. To do so, he plans to use his newly discovered “son,” Tommy Maximoff, as bait and place him under his control.

This is a promising beginning. I sincerely hope it lives up to expectations and does not fall short, because as all these stories converge to reboot the world, the series should at least please fans by bringing Wanda back together with her family.

I really like how you connected WandaVision with the other Marvel stories. I hope Marvel brings Wanda and her family together again!
