VISIONQUEST | EPISODE 3: REBOOT | (2026) | (EN-ES) | REVIEW

Review by @neotopher 🏆#114 🎵79 🎬49 📺30 · 1h · of VisionQuest

I’ll start by saying that I’m surprised by the narrative direction being taken in this Marvel Studios series. It’s very different from the productions they’ve given us over the past few years. I think VisionQuest has the potential to be as good as “Loki” and “Moon Knight,” but there’s still a lot left to see, so I’ll just say that its first episodes make a very good impression.

Just when I thought it would be a predictable story made to bring a father and his son together, it completely subverted my expectations in only four episodes.

After being mortally wounded by the Paladin, Vision managed to escape in a stolen car with Thomas’s help. J.A.R.V.I.S.’s sacrifice only gave him a few minutes of stability, but Vision’s operating system was inevitably going to fail catastrophically. Luckily, he used the sulfuric acid from the car battery to cauterize his wound. (Honestly, I still don’t understand these scientific mechanics. I’m no expert on sentient androids, but this seems plausible to me.)

Vision survives, but his operating system isn’t functioning properly, so he suffers several malfunctions while hiding from the drones sent by the Paladin alongside Thomas. They take shelter in a luxury hotel, where they have time for a father-and-son conversation (a very awkward one). I don’t think there’s any easy way for a super-android with no common sense to explain to a young man with mixed-up memories that everything he believes and feels was created by a witch with emotional problems. After evaluating him through numerous mental simulations, Vision decides not to say more than necessary. As expected, Thomas becomes frustrated and goes out for a walk alone.

While the family drama was unfolding, the secondary subplot introduced a new antagonist who confronted the Paladin directly. You see, at the beginning of the episode, we’re shown that a mysterious killer known as the Executioner Bird is causing panic through a series of extremely disturbing murders. The killer is a machine very similar to Ultron, and while tracking Vision, the Paladin accidentally encounters this brand-new sentient android. A confrontation breaks out, during which the poor Paladin gets beaten up. Fortunately, he manages to escape before meeting a fatal end.

During the first two episodes, the Paladin was presented as a long-term antagonist, but judging by what happened in this episode, his role has been handed over to this new killing machine. The Paladin’s contract has ended; however, I highly doubt his involvement is over. The character hasn’t had much to do yet and still has plenty of potential. Perhaps he will become an ally of Vision and help him face his new enemy once again.

Back to the main plot, Thomas returns to Vision in a better mood. They have a friendly conversation that flows well enough for Thomas to tell him about the day everything changed—the day he drowned in a swimming pool and something strange brought him back to life… But not as himself. Instead, he returned with Tommy Maximoff’s memories and superpowers. When Thomas Shepherd regained consciousness in the pool, his body moved so quickly that it vaporized the water around him. Ever since then, he has lived in conflict because he carries another person’s memories.

At the worst possible moment, Vision’s operating system begins to fail and enters a critical state. If he isn’t shut down immediately, he’ll eventually cause a massive explosion. So Vision quickly comes up with a plan to reboot his system with Thomas/Tommy’s help. His plan is as simple as shutting himself down and having his body receive an electrical charge to turn back on. For that, he’ll need Tommy’s super-speed powers, but Tommy has doubts because he still doesn’t fully control his ability.

Thanks to his father’s influence, Thomas manages to accept what happened and generate an electrical discharge. He reactivates Vision, and the two reconcile. The danger has passed; however… The reboot attracts the attention of the other android, and this new enemy invades Vision’s mind. And that’s how the episode ends, marking a turning point in this story.

The relationship between Vision and Thomas is really interesting with all the confusion about memories and identity. That ending builds great suspense.
