As I mentioned before, I am not what we usually call an Otaku here in our western countries, that is, someone with a great fanaticism for anime and manga. Therefore, I do not consider myself an expert in this type of Japanese audiovisual art, but I do like some works that belong to my favorite genre, science fiction, and that have become true classics. So I'm going to write a series of articles on these, starting with the most influential and transcendent cyberponk anime work of all, of course I'm talking about Ghost in the shell.
Its influence has impacted numerous works of science fiction in different media and formats, but where it is observed most prominently, is in the Matrix saga, especially the first installment, The Matrix, written and directed by the Wachowski sisters (who by that time they were still the Wachowski brothers). Several scenes from the film starring Keanu Reeves seem like copies of others present in Ghost in the shell. Not to mention the similarity between the animated green letters on a black background of the Matrix intro and those of the opening of this anime.
This franchise began in 1989 with a manga developed by Masamune Shirow, which is actually the pseudonym of the mangaka whose real name is Masanori Ota, author of several works also belonging to the Cyberpunk genre, among which the Dominion Tank Police stand out, which even now I have not seen, and Appleseed, another story that I will possibly be writing about soon. Starting with the Ghost in the shell manga, there were several anime adaptations and even a Hollywood production in live action format.
Personally, I have had the opportunity to view the animated feature film of 1995, which is considered the most important of all deliveries, due to the approach that director Mamoru Oshii gave to that film production, giving its theme a darker tone and an almost poetic philosophical character, which made the film an obligatory reference within the Cyberpunk genre. Placing it at the height of the novel Neuromancer by writer William Gibson and the film Blade Runner directed by Ridley Scott.

I also saw the 2002 series Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex several years ago, but my memories are not fresh enough to make a detailed review, what I can say is that I thought it was quite good and was in line with The film, although being a series, had more argumentative lines than the feature film, it was not so focused on the philosophical issue of the identity of being and its existence, it delved less into that issue, but on the contrary, placing greater emphasis on related arguments with politics, industry and the influence of technological advance on society.
In addition, aspects such as the so-called Tachikomas, small intelligent combat tanks with an appearance similar to that of a spider, with a childish and playful behavior, were addressed in greater detail there. Also in that series, the personal lives of the members of the so-called Section 9, commanded by Major Motoko Kusanagi, were explored much more than in the film.
Most recently, of course, I saw the 2017 live action movie starring Scarlett Johansson, who plays Major Kusanagi in this Hollywood adaptation. This feature film was not as successful as it could have been, since in an attempt to attract a wider audience, the philosophical content present in the anime was simplified too much and that caused it not to get the appreciation of the general public, as it is about yet another film among those that contain futuristic themes, much less that managed to please the fans who turned the original into a cult film.
The most recent I have seen of this franchise is the series that is currently available on Netflix (Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045), but only a few chapters, so I will not give more details about it in this article. Of course, I will not talk about the various other TV, Film and Videogame adaptations of which I do not have much knowledge, since I have not had the opportunity to observe them. By the way, of that last group, the one that interests me the most to see soon is the sequel to the anime feature film called Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, released in 2004.
Consequently, I am going to focus the content of this article on the 1995 animated film that, as I said before, is considered the masterpiece of the franchise. I could talk here about my opinion on the live action adaptation of 2017 and compare it with the original, but I think it would take the article too long, so that possibly later I will make another publication exclusively to analyze that film and the reason for its failure at the box office.
Despite the fact that this film is an adaptation of the homonymous manga from 1989 (which I have not read), I understand that it presents important differences from the printed version, which was less reflective and more picturesque, with a good dose of comedy. So when film director Mamoru Oshii decided to bring the story to anime and the big screen, he considered making some changes to the tone of the story, therefore, he had to ask the original author, Masamune Shirow, for his permission to to be able to express his own style to the work, so the project did not materialize until that demand was finally accepted, which resulted in a great success.
The context in which the story of this anime film unfolds is a post-World War III world during the year 2029, with Japan being one of the main world powers and the international political environment plunged into a kind of Second Cold War, in the one that cyber terrorism has become very frequent and that generates great importance in the security of different nations.

Technology has advanced to a level where it is possible to replace human organs with their artificial counterparts, which are even more efficient than biological organs. Therefore, prosthetic implants are a resource of recurring use, increasingly thinning the line that separates human beings from machines and initiating a process of advance towards post-humanity.
The plot centers on the missions assigned to an elite police squad known as Public Security Section 9 or simply Section 9, which is in charge of carrying out covert operations against technological crime. This special force is made up of a series of individuals, whose bodies have cybernetic implants that grant them superior physical capabilities. Its commander is Major Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg whose body is completely synthetic, except for her brain and spinal cord.
The central axis of the block revolves around the persecution of a cybernetic terrorist who is capable of hacking people's minds and implanting false memories, in order to lead them to carry out the actions that he wants them to carry out, turning them into simple puppets and end up completely losing their identity.
The Major is the main protagonist, since the narrative focuses on her existential dilemma, since she is not sure whether she really is a human being or, on the contrary, is just another machine. She presents a cold and pragmatic personality, her behavior is not very social, since she limits her actions to the impeccable and precise performance of her work, like a perfect fighting machine. She surpasses her peers in physical capacities and differs from them by being less empathetic.
Although the gender of her artificial body shows a feminine appearance, by the way very attractive and sexy, her attitude is not really that of a woman, because she really is an asexual being, who does not have the basic instincts of a human being. This despite the fact that she was initially a real person, that leads her to ask herself questions such as What makes someone a person? she is real? If someone has fictitious memories, is she not a person?

A very important concept to understand the plot is the Ghost (ghost), which refers to the spirit or soul of a person, although it does not necessarily correspond to a spiritual entity, but rather to an energetic instance that constitutes the mental code or consciousness. of being, which constitutes the last constituent element of the identity of the individual, which, even though its physical body has been replaced, allows it to continue to exist within a biological or synthetic shell or casing (Shell) that houses it. Therefore, the ghost is a mental abstraction of the being and the shell a representation of its physical matter.
The whole film is full of symbolisms and metaphors in each of its scenes and dialogues, the film is actually quite short, but everything is very well condensed thanks to an impeccable direction and editing. Therefore, it is not advisable to take your eyes off at any time, as it is necessary to have your eyes wide open to notice each of the details, which really are what make this production great.
I am not going to give examples of any of these scenes because the charm of this film is to be able to detect each of these symbolisms for themselves and decipher its intricate philosophical framework, which is much deeper than what we usually see normally in other works. popular science fiction. In fact, its name pays tribute to Arthur Koestler's book "The Ghost in the Machine" from 1967 on philosophical psychology, knowing this you can intuit its orientation, it refers to a human soul enclosed in a robotic body.

I must clarify that the usual love relationships between the protagonists should not be expected, nor merely transactional scenes that do not add anything to the plot other than shooting time, in this case I am talking about pure and hard philosophical science fiction, of which I do not all types of public will be happy to consume. It is a kind of content for lovers of the genre, which can be very entertaining for other viewers, as it contains action and impressive technological sets, but it can also leave a bad taste in the mouth of the most unsuspecting audience and popcorn.
On the other hand, it is appropriate to mention that this film presents a very well achieved visual level for its time, in fact, its quality was outstanding and its budget was very high at the time. A quarter of a century after its premiere, the visual aesthetics of this feature film, which pioneered the combination of traditional animation with 3D computer-generated graphics, continues today to look quite good compared to today's graphics, of course with their obvious differences.
As for its colors and visual style, let us remember that it is representing a dystocic world and aims to convey the feelings of a being that does not find the meaning of its existence. Therefore, it uses dark tones that create a heavy atmosphere and constantly displays the color green in direct allusion to the perspective of a computational entity.
