Vuelvo por acá luego de más de un mes de ausencia, esta vez comparto con la comunidad mi apreciación sobre la más reciente película de Pixar estrenada en Disney+, me refiero por supuesto al largometraje animado Turning Red, el cual solo se proyectó en salas de cine en aquellos países en los que no está presente el servicio de streaming de la casa del ratón. Esta producción podría decirse que es la ópera prima como directora de largometrajes, de la animadora, guionista y ahora también directora china-canadiense Domee Shi, aunque ella previamente dirigió en 2018 el cortometraje Bao, lo que la convirtió en la primera mujer en dirigir un corto de ese reconocido estudio de animación, obra que además obtuvo un premio Oscar como mejor cortometraje en la edición del año siguiente de los premios de la academia.
La sinopsis de esta cinta es evidentemente fantasiosa y extravagante, a simple vista puede llevarnos a imaginar que se trata de otra producción genérica, dirigida exclusivamente a un público infantil, con mucha comedia física y sin mayor trasfondo. Esto debido a que se centra en las vivencias de una chica adolescente llamada Meilin Lee que, debido a un suceso místico ocurrido a su familia en el pasado, hereda por línea materna, la extraña capacidad de convertirse en un Panda Rojo (animal del que por cierto yo no tenía conocimiento que existía en el mundo real), esa transformación le sucede repentinamente en momentos de estrés o en los que experimenta emociones fuertes. Sin embargo, esa premisa es solo la metáfora empleada para expresar conceptos más realistas y cotidianos.
La película ha recibido algunas críticas debido a que se enfoca muy fuertemente en personajes femeninos y además también en la cultura oriental, en especial en la colonia asiática que hace vida en Norteamérica. La ambientación de la cinta corresponde a la ciudad de Toronto (Canadá), concretamente durante el año 2002, es decir 20 años atrás con respecto a su fecha de estreno, esto ha sido entendido por algunos críticos como una forma de evadir las complicaciones narrativas que pudiera ocasionar la inclusión de las tecnologías actuales, en particular las redes sociales, en el desenvolvimiento de la trama. Por todo esto, quienes la desmeritan afirman que no es una obra para todos los públicos, sino que se dirige a un nicho muy específico y que por ello gran parte de la audiencia no puede sentirse identificada con ella, además aseguran que es demasiado simple e incluso poco original por tomar elementos de otras historias.
I come back here after more than a month of absence, this time I share with the community my appreciation of the most recent Pixar film released on Disney+, I am referring of course to the animated feature film Turning Red, which was only screened in theaters in those countries where the house of the mouse streaming service is not present. This production is arguably the directorial debut of Chinese-Canadian animator, screenwriter and now director Domee Shi, although she previously directed the 2018 short film Bao, making her the first woman to direct a short of that renowned animation studio, a work that also won an Oscar for best short film in the following year's edition of the academy awards.
The synopsis of this film is obviously fanciful and extravagant, at first glance it can lead us to imagine that it is another generic production, aimed exclusively at a children's audience, with a lot of physical comedy and without much background. This is because it focuses on the experiences of a teenage girl named Meilin Lee who, due to a mystical event that occurred to her family in the past, inherits through her maternal line the strange ability to become a Red Panda (an animal from which true I had no knowledge that it existed in the real world), that transformation happens suddenly in moments of stress or when you experience strong emotions. However, that premise is just the metaphor used to express more realistic and everyday concepts.
The film has received some criticism because it focuses very heavily on female characters and also on Eastern culture, especially in the Asian colony that lives in North America. The setting of the film corresponds to the city of Toronto (Canada), specifically during the year 2002, that is, 20 years ago with respect to its release date, this has been understood by some critics as a way to avoid the narrative complications that could cause the inclusion of current technologies, in particular social networks, in the development of the plot. For all this, those who detract from it affirm that it is not a work for all audiences, but that it is aimed at a very specific niche and that is why a large part of the audience cannot feel identified with it, they also assure that it is too simple and even unoriginal for taking elements from other stories.
Mucho de lo plasmado en el largometraje, tiene que ver en gran medida con las experiencias personales de la propia directora, eso le otorga una identidad muy particular a la obra, a la vez que, por su ambientación y sus referencias a las boybands de inicios de siglo, resulta nostálgica para quienes formamos parte de la cohorte poblacional millennials. Además, la autora parece haber contado con gran libertad por parte del estudio, lo que le permitió imprimirle un aire fresco y original al filme, ya que toma un rumbo estético y narrativo bastante distante de lo acostumbrado en los productos de Pixar. Creo que, si bien el estudio siempre ha exhibido un estándar de calidad muy alto, en sus últimos proyectos se ha estado distanciando mucho de lo que es la diversión infantil, para crear historias profundas con contenido más adulto, que apelan a componentes dramáticos muy marcados para cautivar a la audiencia, pero en este caso, la película no tiene ambiciones tan amplias, es solo una comedia disparatada con un mensaje puntual y conciso, que aun cuando presenta momentos emotivos, no se regodea en ellos y no pierde su objetivo de generar diversión a su público.
Personalmente creo que es una excelente película para ver en familia, muy divertida y con temática bastante interesante, es verdad que tiene una argumentación sencilla y lineal, pero eso desde mi punto de vista no la hace mala per se, más bien me parece un gran logro para sus creadores cuando consiguen dotar de tal grado de entretenimiento y significado metafórico a historias minimalistas e infantiles como esta. En cuanto a lo de identificarse o no con los personajes, imagino que es cuestión de gustos e incluso de prejuicios, ya que no me parece necesario ser una chica adolescente para comprender las situaciones por las que atraviesa la protagonista y empatizar con ella; obviamente para el género femenino será mucho más fácil verse reflejado, de eso no cabe duda, pero los hombres creo que perfectamente podemos disfrutar de narrativas en las que no seamos protagonistas, siempre que estas se desarrollen de la forma correcta.
Much of what is captured in the film has to do largely with the personal experiences of the director herself, which gives the work a very particular identity, while, due to its setting and its references to early boybands century, it is nostalgic for those of us who are part of the millennial population cohort. In addition, the author seems to have had great freedom on the part of the studio, which allowed her to give the film a fresh and original air, since it takes an aesthetic and narrative course that is quite distant from what is customary in Pixar products. I think that, although the studio has always exhibited a very high quality standard, in its latest projects it has been distancing itself a lot from what is children's fun, to create deep stories with more adult content, which appeal to very marked dramatic components. to captivate the audience, but in this case, the film does not have such broad ambitions, it is just a crazy comedy with a punctual and concise message, that even when it presents emotional moments, it does not wallow in them and does not lose its objective of generating entertainment to your audience.
Personally I think it's an excellent movie to watch as a family, very funny and with a very interesting theme, it's true that it has a simple and linear plot, but from my point of view that doesn't make it bad per se, rather it seems like a great achievement for its creators when they manage to provide such a degree of entertainment and metaphorical meaning to minimalist and children's stories like this one. As for whether or not to identify with the characters, I imagine it's a matter of taste and even prejudice, since I don't think it's necessary to be a teenage girl to understand the situations the protagonist is going through and empathize with her; obviously for the female gender it will be much easier to see themselves reflected, there is no doubt about that, but men I think we can perfectly enjoy narratives in which we are not protagonists, as long as they are developed in the correct way.
En esencia la historia que nos cuenta este largometraje es una alegoría a la pubertad y en especial a la menstruación, lo cual resulta en buena medida algo innovador, ya que se trata de un tema que fácilmente podría considerarse como un tabú. Por lo tanto, la contribución de este largometraje a visibilizar y normalizar algo que es tan natural en la vida de cualquier chica, me parece un elemento muy destacable y que merece reconocimiento, además la película transmite un mensaje más profundo, el cual tiene que ver con la presión que llevan sobre sus hombros algunos jóvenes por conseguir la aprobación de sus padres, lo cual está mucho más arraigado en la cultura asiática que en la occidental. La historia sugiere a los jóvenes que expresen sus preferencias y encaminen sus vidas en la dirección que les haga realmente felices a sí mismos, dejando de comportarse de formas ajenas a su propio carácter y personalidad solo por intentar complacer las demandas de sus padres.
Entiendo que este mensaje (en especial durante la batalla final) puede resultar un tanto delicado de transmitir, ya que se presta a ser asumido por los niños como una excusa para desobedecer a sus padres, pues, aunque claramente la cinta se refiere a aquellos padres cuyo comportamiento sobre protector y controlador se vuelve obsesivo y tóxico; cuando el discernimiento entre: si se ha sobrepasado o no esa línea imaginaria, queda en manos de un niño o adolescente, entonces pueden surgir distorsiones considerablemente perjudiciales para la cordialidad y el respeto en cualquier relación familiar. Desde esa perspectiva, el mensaje final de la película podría entenderse como inadecuado, pero es algo que resulta bastante discutible, ya que a mi parecer, el significado de ese conflicto generacional que se muestra durante la mayor parte de la obra, es explicado explícitamente por la trama de autodescubrimiento y desarrollo de la identidad personal de Mei y su relación con su mamá, quien la hace llevar una vida en la que debe constantemente reprimir su verdadera personalidad para intentar satisfacer sus rígidas y elevadas expectativas.
En cuanto a elementos más visuales relacionados con las características técnicas de la animación, la directora utilizó un estilo muy influenciado por el anime, lo cual se hace evidente con mayor énfasis en las expresiones faciales de los personajes, distanciándose de la estética clásica de las animaciones de Pixar, las cuales, como dije antes, nos tienen acostumbrados a un nivel de calidad impresionante, pero no presentan demasiada variación en su estilo, por lo que sus diseños se han vuelto un tanto monótonos y poco disruptivos. En esta oportunidad, el caso es diferente, por lo que en mi caso particular siento mayor relación entre esta película y “La familia Mitchell vs. las máquinas” o incluso “Los Croods: Una nueva era”, las cuales se me hacen mucho más divertidas que por ejemplo “Soul” y “Encanto”.
Por último, en caso de tener que calificar a esta película yo le asigno 9 / 10, ya que, aunque me parece muy buena y acorde a su propósito, creo que tiene un pequeño margen de posibilidad para ser aun, si se le hubiera añadido algún giro inesperado, aunque esto no quiere decir que sea muy predecible, pero como ya he mencionado es una película sencilla y lineal. In essence, the story that this feature film tells us is an allegory to puberty and especially to menstruation, which is largely innovative, since it is a subject that could easily be considered taboo. Therefore, the contribution of this feature film to make visible and normalize something that is so natural in the life of any girl, seems to me to be a very remarkable element that deserves recognition, in addition, the film transmits a deeper message, which has to do with with the pressure that some young people carry on their shoulders to obtain the approval of their parents, which is much more ingrained in Asian culture than in Western culture. The story suggests that young people express their preferences and direct their lives in the direction that makes them really happy, stopping behaving in ways that are alien to their own character and personality just to try to please their parents' demands.
I understand that this message (especially during the final battle) can be somewhat delicate to convey, since it lends itself to being assumed by children as an excuse to disobey their parents, because, although the tape clearly refers to those parents whose overprotective and controlling behavior becomes obsessive and toxic; when the discernment between: whether or not that imaginary line has been crossed, remains in the hands of a child or adolescent, then distortions can arise that are considerably detrimental to cordiality and respect in any family relationship. From that perspective, the final message of the film could be understood as inadequate, but it is something that is quite debatable, since in my opinion, the meaning of that generational conflict that is shown during most of the work, is explicitly explained by the plot of self-discovery and development of the personal identity of Mei and her relationship with her mother, who makes her lead a life in which she must constantly repress her true personality to try to satisfy her rigid and high expectations.
Regarding more visual elements related to the technical characteristics of the animation, the director used a style highly influenced by anime, which is evident with greater emphasis on the facial expressions of the characters, distancing herself from the classic aesthetics of the animations. from Pixar, which, as I said before, have accustomed us to an impressive level of quality, but they do not present too much variation in their style, so their designs have become somewhat monotonous and not very disruptive. This time, the case is different, so in my particular case I feel a greater relationship between this film and “The Mitchell family vs. the machines” or even “The Croods: A new era”, which I find much more fun than, for example, “Soul” and “Encanto”.
Lastly, in case I have to rate this film, I assign it 9/10, since, although it seems very good and according to its purpose, I think it has a small margin of possibility to be even, if it had been added some unexpected twist, although this does not mean that it is very predictable, but as I have already mentioned it is a simple and linear film.
