DTF St. Louis (mini-series): One of the best of 2026 IMO

Review by @netflixr ⭐ 🏆#186 🔥1 🎵9 🎬300 📺171 · 4h · of DTF St. Louis · 1 view

I went into this series with the totally wrong idea and I think a lot of other people will as well. I think that most native-English speakers as well as many non-native-English speakers probably already know what "DTF" means, (it means "down to fuck" as in hooking up with people with things like Tinder). When you combine that synopsis with the poster that I saw, my immediate reaction was that this is going to be some sort of mid-life crisis comedy about middle-aged men trying to get laid.

Well, it isn't that at all. What it is might surprise you.

This is my first time posting using the scrobblelife interface. I've tried to stick to the rules but if I violated any of them, please know this was not intentional.

There are things I am going to talk about that might seem like spoilers but I don't mention anything that isn't in the trailer other than my own feelings about it. The trailer is also linked below

You likely recognize Jason Bateman (from many things) and also David Harbour (from Stranger Things) but you might not recognize Linda Cardellini (Who I recall from her epic performance in the unfortunately short-lived "Dead to Me" series). All of these people perform absolutely flawlessly in their roles in this strange story about friendship, sex, marriage, and a bit of middle-aged crisis management.

Clark (Bateman) meets Floyd (Harbour) one day when Floyd gets hired to be a sign-language interpreter on the news station that he works for. They talk after working a few segments together and end up getting along swimmingly. Later on Floyd kind of opens up about personal issues in his life and it turns out that Clark is not at all bothered by this and appreciates how open and honest this very kind man is. Later on, Floyd invited Clark to a party at his house where Clark meets Floyd's wife Carol (Cardellini), and the two of them, fortunately/unfortunately hit it off a bit too well and start an affair on the side.

Clark is always really bothered by this because he isn't using Floyd, he genuinely likes Floyd and is torn about how much he cares for him, but he really enjoys his "playtime" with Carol as well.

While all of this is going on, the show takes a very unexpected shift from being a mid-life crisis / buddy drama, to a murder mystery when Floyd turns up dead and things start to look very suspicious with the evidence that the local PD and Sheriff's office happens to stumble upon.

The show totally turns you on your head because you don't really know what to expect now as they jump backwards and forward in time as the two detectives conduct more and more interviews and the past of the people involved (primarily Clark, Floyd, and Carol) is revealed to us piece-by-piece.

Richard Jenkins and Joy Sunday are a fun cop duo because they are very different in their approaches and ages and at first this seems to hold them back but it is precisely their completely different way of looking at things that leads them to success. You'll see what I mean as the 7 episodes go by.

I think that this show will resonate with older people that are in or approaching their mid-life a lot more so than younger folks, but there are a lot of true messages in this thing that will make you reflect upon your own life and how getting older is something that is a bit difficult for all of us.

You want to be cool and think you are but are probably wrong in the eyes of most people. You struggle to remain fit and attractive as well as balance money and career. You probably drift away from your marriage partner and feel the urge to "explore other options" even though you know this can be very damaging to all people involved.

Then of course there is the murder mystery that is looming in the background that at least in my opinion, kept this mini-series fresh in a way that I don't think it could have been if that aspect of the story wasn't in there.

Should I watch it?

I can't really imagine people not enjoying this one especially if they are a bit older. There is a lot of relatable material in here that I believe people will be able to join into their own lives potentially - well, hopefully minus the murder.

This has a great mix of drama, intrigue, mystery, as well as a sprinkling of comedy. This is one of the only series I have binge-watched in 2026 and if I were to make a list, I would consider it one of the best mini-series I have ever seen. Apparently the Emmy's agrees with me, because this one already won the award for "Outstanding Limited Series."

this can only be legally streamed with an HBO subscription
