I just finished watching the latest Spider-Man, Brand New Day, and I'm disappointed in the writing.
It's always crazy annoying to see a poverty of creativity at the highest levels. Marvel is at the highest level of film making, so how come it's still possible to see as much creative poverty as this in their stuff? If I can see it and point it out, how come they don't have someone or people on their payroll who could have seen it too and pointed it out before the movie was made?
Crazy shit, I'm telling you.
The Plot Flaw Proper
The plot flaw in this Spiderman is a common plot flaw in movies, we've seen it a hundred times before. A character comes on the scene with good intentions, but doesn't explain the good intentions no matter how understandable it is, no matter how clear it is that if they state their good intentions they wouldn't face the attacks they are facing.
They just keep up facing the attacks, we keep looking at them like they're bad, only for it to come out later that they were good all this while and were doing all the things they did for good reasons.
They usually get the chance to state their good intentions a thousand times but they never did. And a reasonable person watching the story can't just take it, because, it doesn't make any sense at all that the character didn't state their intentions, they had a lot of opportunities to state their intentions!
It just becomes clear that the only reason the writers of the story didn't let the character state their intentions is because once the intentions are stated the character wouldn't appear bad to the viewer and the twist that they're actually good wouldn't be possible.
The writer wants an interesting twist but goes about it the cheap way.
If you've also watched the latest Spider-Man you're probably already zeroing in on the character I'm talking about. The psychic girl, Jean Grey.
She came on the scene and was doing very cruel stuff, destroying lives and properties in a quest to fulfill her mission. She even did something as cruel as putting MJ's (Spiderman's lover) life at risk and deceiving Spiderman into thinking he's gotten his lover back after all these years.
All the while she was doing these evil things she was having long conversations with Spider-Man, she could see Spider-Man was a good guy, she warned him several times to stay out of her way, but she never simply told him what she was doing all of these for, which is that she was simply trying to find her sister who was abducted.
Finding your sister who was abducted is a very understandable mission, and if you want the cooperation of Spiderman you'll be certain that if you just told him you'll have his cooperation. But she never told him despite how many opportunities she had.
Simply because if she told him the writer can't make her do all the evil cool things the writer plan to wow us with, and the writer would not have the chance to throw a surprise at us that she's actually just a good person.
Yuck!
Marvel has to do better. Not just Marvel, big movie makers have work to do, the poverty in the writing sometimes makes you wonder how come you can see it but all the huge professionals on big paychecks can't see it.
