I get excited when I manage to connect with a series, I don't usually consume many movies or series, so, when I decided to sign up for HBO max I set out to find stories that would entertain me and make me have a good time (better than just watching social media...). After trying to watch a couple of series that I didn't manage to feel too interested in, I found "the undoing" a psychological thriller mini-series with a cast of pretty well known actors, among them: Nicole Kidman, Hugh Grant and Edgar Ramirez.

Grace (Nicole Kidman) is a renowned psychologist in Manhattan, her husband Jonathan (Hugh Grant) is a child oncologist and is charming, from the first minutes of the first chapter we are shown a united marriage and a happy family, living in the bubble of the upper class with luxuries, privileges and attendance to meetings and activities with people of the same social circle.
Elena Alves is a woman who begins to appear recurrently in his life after they met thanks to the mothers' committee for the organization of an event for their children's school, her presence, although a little strange and mysterious, causes Grace to feel curious and offer her friendship when she needs it.
One day after the event, it is discovered that Elena Alves was brutally murdered in her studio, and her 8-year-old son was the one who found her. Coincidentally, Grace's husband disappears after that night. ....
The night of Elena Alves' murder, Grace's husband had to leave on emergency because he was called to attend an operation, from then on he stops communicating with his family, he was supposed to travel to a medical conference the next day, however, Grace doesn't manage to hear anything from him and keeps her worried, besides, she wants to tell him the news of Elena's death, which keeps her stunned. It is not long before she discovers that Jonathan left his phone in the drawer of his room, which is quite strange and, of course, generates suspicions, but so far there is no connection between Elena and him...
The policemen leading the investigation of the case appear on the scene to bring some rather revealing news to Grace: it turns out that all suspicions of the murderer seem to lead to Jonathan, who is still missing; a matter that turns the family's life upside down, and they are very affected by the whole situation.
Well, the premise is not new, I can remember several similar plots of "the millionaire family apparently involved in a murder case" especially in Agatha Christie's books, but in spite of that, I think the way the case is approached is quite interesting:
In 6 chapters the plot of this story full of suspense and especially a lot of drama unfolds. Jonathan, the renowned doctor of children with cancer is accused of murdering Elena Alves, why? The reasons are not very clear at the beginning, the connections between these two characters seem almost null, but there are many coincidences against them, especially their flight after the murder. A potential suspect is also Elena's husband, however, he has an alibi covered, which reduces the chances that he was at the place and time of the murder.
From my point of view, there are two points of focus in this series: proving Jonathan's innocence (or not) in front of the murder, and, even more interesting, the psychological effect of the situation on Grace and her son, the way she faces each trial and also how she tries to take care of her son about his father's accusations, despite the drama and the revealed truths that distort the image of a good man she had of Jonathan... You will agree with me that it is a delicate matter and, therefore, hard to face.
For me, the whole story was full of tension, each chapter gifting you with a new truth or lie that calls into question the context of what we had already been shown in the first two chapters. I feel that the whole plot is about digging and digging until you find the truth, despite the obstacles that the characters themselves put in the way and that hinders revealing the facts.
For a person who likes this kind of plots, it is an entertaining series, although sometimes I felt some inconsistencies, in general I think it is well approached: I feel that each character has relevance within the plot, they are there either to support and advise the protagonists, or hinder in some way some important fact and that generates suspense for the following chapters; the scenes before and after each trial are also exciting, I liked to understand how the actions are organized by the lawyers with their clients to know what they have and do not have to prove when they are in front of the court, and also the family context or any relationship between the characters, from the marriage of Grace and Jonathan, or their relationship with their parents, friends, and of course, the love affair between Jonathan and Elena.
If I had to give it a score, it would be a 7/10, it is a miniseries that has several components that I consider are key to keep the genre-loving audience hooked: drama, empathy and affection (or hate) that are born to know the history of the characters and the pieces that gradually come together before some plot twist equally revealing and exciting; and, one more thing, aesthetics, setting and photography also I consider that are consistent with the whole approach of the story.

Me emociona cuando logro conectar con una serie, no suelo consumir muchas películas o series, así que, cuando decidí contratar HBO max me propuse encontrar historias que me entretuvieran y me hicieran pasar un buen rato (mejor que solo ver redes sociales…). Después de intentar ver un par de series con las que no logré sentirme demasiado interesada, encontré “the undoing” una mini seria de thriller psicológico con un reparto de actores bastante reconocidos, entre ellos: Nicole Kidman, Hugh Grant y Edgar Ramírez.

Grace (Nicole Kidman) es una reconocida psicóloga de Manhattan, su esposo Jonathan (Hugh Grant) es oncólogo de niños y es encantador, desde los primeros minutos del primer capítulo se nos muestra un matrimonio unido y una familia feliz, que vive en la burbuja de la clase alta con lujos, privilegios y asistencia a reuniones y actividades con gente de su mismo círculo social.
Elena Alves es una mujer que empieza a aparecer de forma recurrente en su vida luego de que se conocieran gracias al comité de madres para la organización un evento para la escuela de sus hijos, su presencia, aunque sea un poco extraña y misteriosa, causa que Grace sienta curiosidad y le ofrezca su apoyo cuando lo necesite.
Un día después de haberse festejado dicho evento, se descubre que Elena Alves, fue brutalmente asesinada en su estudio, y su hijo de 8 años fue el que la encontró, casualmente, el esposo de Grace, desaparece después de esa noche....
La noche del asesinato de Elena Alves, el esposo de Grace tuvo que salir de emergencia porque fue llamado para que asistiera a una operación, a partir de ahí deja de comunicarse con su familia, supuestamente debía viajar a una conferencia de medicina al día siguiente, sin embargo, Grace no logra saber nada de él y la mantiene preocupada, además, quiere darle la noticia de la muerte de Elena, que la mantiene atónita. No pasa demasiado tiempo cuando descubre que Jonathan dejó su teléfono en el gavetero de su habitación, una cuestión bastante extraña.
Los policías que lideran la investigación del caso aparecen en escena para llevar noticias bastante reveladoras a Grace: resulta que todas las sospechas del asesino parecen llevar a Jonathan, quien sigue desaparecido; un asunto que pone de cabeza la vida de la familia, quienes se ven muy afectados frente a toda la situación.
Bien, la premisa no es nueva, puedo recordar varias tramas similares de “la familia millonaria aparentemente envuelta en un caso de asesinato” especialmente en libros de Agatha Christie, pero a pesar de ello, creo que la manera en como es abordado el caso es bien interesante:
En 6 capítulos se desarrolla la trama de esta historia llena de suspenso y especialmente mucho drama. Jonathan, el reconocidísimo doctor de niños con cáncer es acusado de asesinar a Elena Alves, ¿por qué? Las razones no son muy claras al inicio, las conexiones entre estos dos personajes parecen casi nulas, pero hay muchas coincidencias en su contra, especialmente su huida después del asesinato. Un potencial sospechoso también es el esposo de Elena, sin embargo, tiene una coartada cubierta, lo que restan posibilidades que haya estado en el lugar y momento del asesinato.
Desde mi punto de vista, hay dos puntos de enfoque en esta serie: probar la inocencia (o no) de Jonathan frente al asesinato, y, más interesante aún, el efecto psicológico de la situación en Grace y su hijo, la manera en como enfrenta cada juicio y también como trata de cuidar a su hijo sobre las acusaciones de su padre, a pesar del drama y las verdades reveladas que distorsionan la imagen de buen hombre que tenía de Jonathan… Coincidirán conmigo en que es un asunto delicado y, por ende, duro de afrontar.
Para mí, toda la historia estuvo llena de tensión, cada capítulo te regala una verdad o una mentira nueva que pone en duda el contexto de lo que ya se nos había mostrado en los primeros dos capítulos. Siento que toda la trama se trata de escarbar y escarbar hasta encontrar la verdad, a pesar de las trabas que los mismos personajes ponen en el camino y que obstaculiza revelar los hechos.
Para una persona que le gusta este tipo de tramas, es una serie entretenida, aunque en ocasiones sentí algunas incongruencias, en general creo que está bien abordada: siento que cada personaje tiene relevancia dentro de la trama, están ahí bien sea para apoyar y aconsejar a los protagonistas, u obstaculizar de algún modo algún hecho importante y que genera suspenso para los siguientes capítulos; las escenas antes y después de cada juicio son emocionantes también, me gustó entender como son organizadas las actuaciones por parte de los abogados con sus clientes para saber qué es lo que tienen y no tienen que demostrar cuando estén frente al juzgado, y, también, el contexto familiar o de cualquier relación que hay entre los personajes, desde el matrimonio de Grace y Jonathan, o su relación con sus padres, amigos, y claro, el amorío entre Jonathan y Elena.
Si tuviera que darle una puntuación, sería un 7/10, es una miniserie que tiene varios componentes que considero son clave para mantener al público amante del género enganchado: el drama, la empatía y el cariño (u odio) que nacen al conocer la historia de los personajes y las piezas que poco a poco se van uniendo antes de algún giro de trama igual de revelador y emocionante; y, una cosa más, la estética, la ambientación y fotografía también considero que son acordes con todo el planteamiento de la historia.
