Hello, blog friends! I’m back in the community. Today, I’m reviewing a film that really made an impression on me: The Circle, starring the talented Emma Watson (known to everyone for her role as Hermione in Harry Potter) and Tom Hanks. The story follows a young woman facing a difficult life: she works at a call center, her father suffers from multiple sclerosis, and money is always tight. Her only solace comes from her friends—Annie, a huge tech enthusiast, and her best friend and outdoor adventure companion, who hates anything to do with technology. One day, Annie suggests she apply for a job at The Circle, a rapidly expanding company that offers not only a better salary but also a wealth of perks. She enthusiastically accepts the chance to enter this world where nothing is lacking—gardens, gyms, facilities, and classes of all kinds—making it an ideal place for a young woman. The company is obsessed with technology, especially social media; its founder holds a near-religious conviction that the more people post and the more they are watched, the less lonely they will feel, the stronger their sense of community will become, and crime rates will even decrease. The founder holds numerous conferences to share his theories and has amassed a large following—much like a cult—of people eager to put themselves on display, post constantly, and build an incredibly strong virtual community.
Although Mae performs her job excellently, she is reprimanded for not using social media enough and for failing to socialize within the company—often returning to her parents' home on weekends instead of attending various company events. Furthermore, the company seems to know everything about her and her life, even offering to help with her sick father; to Mae, it feels like a dream, and she sees little sacrifice in starting to post about all her activities and engaging more with the community. Mae meets a unique young man who appears skeptical of the company's methods, but she is already so captivated by "The Circle" that she easily adapts, agreeing to have her health data monitored and made public and to post as much content as possible. It is through one of these posts that she loses her best friend; believing she is doing him a favor and providing publicity, she shares his artwork made from deer antlers, inadvertently angering environmentalists who begin to harass him both online and at home. Her friend tries to warn her about the dangers of oversharing and technology, but Mae is already part of the system; she actively participates in conferences and even decides to undergo an experiment involving constant live-streaming—filmed everywhere except the bathroom. She intends to show every aspect of her life at all times to prove that this is the only way to be truly sincere and authentic with the community, arguing that constant surveillance would be beneficial because being in the spotlight encourages better behavior and a more mindful approach to life.
At first, Mae is enthusiastic about the experiment; everyone is curious about her life, her follower count rises, and the company is pleased. However, she gradually begins to feel the strain of this constant media exposure: neither she nor her family and old friends have a moment of privacy, as they are always under the lens of Mae’s camera. This state of being constantly online turns into a prison, and her loved ones begin to drift away from her—a situation that ultimately culminates in a disastrous final experiment orchestrated by The Circle and its unscrupulous founders. The film serves as an excellent critique of the obsession with social media and the urge to post everything; it addresses the invasion of privacy, the stress of living constantly in the spotlight—bombarded by followers and haters alike—and the tendency to abandon solitary, enjoyable activities in favor of the habit of failing to savor the moment because one is too busy posting about it. It is a brilliant film that, albeit in an exaggerated way, holds up a mirror to modern society and the direction it is taking due to the excessive use of social media and similar platforms.
