After.Life (2009): Is she really dead? Can you feel that much fear in life? Or suffer so much because of everything or everyone that you want to disappear from this world? Be careful—because all those feelings can become reality, and in any case, there may be no turning back. Because it’s only after you’ve supposedly reached the afterlife that you realize you did love, you did care, and you were capable of feeling empathy for others and for yourself. In that sense, this thriller—filled with drama and mystery—will, in a way, help us understand that rather than being afraid of death, it seems humans are actually more afraid of living. After.Life (2009) is a film that reflects all these aspects in a raw, cruel, and yet healing way, from the perspective of a funeral director who seems to have a kind of gift for connecting with corpses.
The thing is, we don't actually know if the supposed corpse in the plot is really a corpse; these are things we have to figure out as the story unfolds, and from my point of view, I've found them incredibly intriguing. Because, while the person in charge of preparing the bodies certainly does his job with great dedication, what if, deep down, he’s a psychopath or a sadist who chooses his victims? Come and find out for yourself. This movie will really make you think; you’ll be completely confused and feel like you’re caught between life and death. I think there are very vulnerable points in the characters—and in people in general—that catch the funeral director’s attention. So, how do the corpses end up with him? I think I’m rambling, and this is complete madness, hahahahaha.
This piece—or rather, this film—was directed by Agnieszka Wojtowicz, who shows us just how thin the line between life and death can be. In truth, we are in the presence of a psychological horror that is far too subtle; it’s not about watching a villain torture someone in a run-of-the-mill way; it’s about a very respectful, delicate, patient person who treats her clients—in this case, her corpses—with great care. What’s interesting about the director’s style is that she constantly seeks to sow doubt in the viewer’s mind, so that we can calmly reflect on whether we truly value our lives, whether we’re prepared for death, and whether we fear being forgotten by our loved ones; in short, this is another recommended film that I enjoyed from start to finish.

Before diving into the plot, I always make it a point to introduce the characters in the film so that everyone knows who we’re talking about as the story unfolds. And let me tell you, Liam Neeson, in the role of funeral home director Eliot Deacon, portrays his character in a cold, detached manner—far too calm for what we’ve come to expect from him as a full-fledged action hero; however, he’s quite the character here, because he acts as a sort of psychologist and kidnapper all at once; well, you’ll draw your own conclusions, but his performance is masterful.
Christina Ricci plays Anna Taylor, a girl going through a massive existential crisis; her performance is fantastic and leads us to believe that she’s certainly in some kind of purgatory or a total nightmare. We can’t overlook the famous Justin Long, who plays Paul; you already know what kind of fate awaits this guy, and I’ll leave his performance in this film up to you, so you can imagine for yourselves what might happen and draw your own conclusions. For now, Justin acts excellently and fully immerses himself in his characters; that seems to be the case here, but I don’t know if he’ll end up with a good or bad outcome. Chandler Canterbury plays Jack, a young man in Anna’s class; his role is very important, and you’ll see why.
For now, Ana is a young teacher facing many personal problems; she appears to be going through a major existential crisis, showing that she is dissatisfied with every aspect of her life. I say this because her partner is Paul, a young lawyer from the city whose relationship with Ana has many ups and downs; they argue, can’t reach agreements, and, above all, Paul isn’t exactly his mother-in-law’s favorite either. The thing is, one night Ana and Paul go out to dinner. Apparently, Paul was going to propose to Ana, but since they’re both always on the defensive, they get into an argument right there in the restaurant, and Ana runs out. In a fit of desperation, she gets into her car, and a short time later, she gets into an accident. Before the accident, there’s a small detail you need to pay attention to.
After the accident, Ana wakes up at the funeral home on a table where bodies are prepared. She realizes that Eliot is preparing her for her funeral; however, very strange and disturbing things happen—for example, Ana speaks, gradually moves, touches things, walks, and looks for a way to escape—and the dead don’t do these things. The truth is that Eliot tells her she is dead, but that she appears to be in a sort of limbo, and he has the power to help them in their transition from life to death. All of this plays with our minds, because at times it makes us think Ana is alive, since she destroys things and tries to open the door; according to Eliot, Ana is still clinging to life and refuses to accept that she has died.
Her mother visits her and sees her after Eliot injects her with a special substance to relax her muscles, claiming that this dose makes her loved ones see her as if she were alive. Paul also visits her, but they won’t let him in; he believes Ana is still alive and goes to the police, but there they tell him that all the documentation confirms she is deceased. From there, even stranger events continue to unfold—events I can’t tell you about, because that would give away key details. The boy Jack plays an important role in the story, and it is Jack, in fact, who gives Paul his ideas. Certainly, Eliot is someone who treats his clients very well, and on his wall he has photos of all of them looking their best; we don’t know if he’s a good Samaritan or if the funeral home is a front for something even more chilling. Agnieszka has truly put our minds to work in a masterful way, and there are details about Ana that will make you doubt everything.
A variety of settings appear in this film; however, the dark spaces of the funeral home dominate the entire film. The colors make a strong visual impact on the viewer—especially the contrast between the clean, white morgue and the striking red of Ana’s dress. The cinematography and sound are exemplary, combining a trio of elements that invite viewers to come up with the wildest theories. For example, as viewers, we come to believe that Eliot is truly a kind of mediator who communicates with the dead to ensure their passage to the afterlife isn’t so traumatic. On the other hand, we might also think that, in one way or another, these bodies are brought to him in a calculated manner to give free rein to his murderous and psychopathic nature.
Each of us can draw our own conclusions and decipher the funeral director’s true intentions; perhaps I’m just speculating. In any case, the movie leaves us with a direct message and invites us to reflect on our actions in life; we can’t just go through life like robots without any purpose. If that’s the case, we’re proving Eliot right when he says that we’re alive, but in truth we’re the walking dead before our hearts stop beating. We mustn’t let opportunities slip away just on a whim or because we’re going through an existential crisis; we must take action, face reality, and that way we’ll be able to change our destiny. Let’s not be like Ana, because in the end, there’s no turning back. Best regards, and see you soon.

After.Life (2009): ¿Realmente está Muerta?. After.
