When it comes to reliving the past, there’s nothing better than enjoying a good ’80s movie—and this happens to me all the time; because you really do delight in these kinds of films, even if they aren’t considered masterpieces by the big-name film critics. Such is the case with Streets of Fire, a 1984 film that, in my view, is a valuable cult classic that wasn’t appreciated in its day but is now a true work of art. It combines action, crime, thriller, drama, music, adventure, romance, and comedy—and to me, it definitely feels like a modern Western and a kind of comic book brought to life. Now, this effect could only be achieved by director Walter Hill, who, from the depths of his being, presents us with a true 1984 rock-and-roll fable; *Streets of Fire*, in my opinion, is excellent from start to finish.
On the other hand, Walter is a genius of action cinema and neo-noir, so he adapts the themes and atmosphere of 1940s and 1950s film noir to the present day, creating a unique, full-color visual style. In his films, he frequently uses rain, wells, and neon lights that reflect perfectly on the water; he also creates somber atmospheres that serve as the perfect backdrop for the action. Now, all of this, combined with the lead stars—Michael Paré (Tom Cody), Diane Lane (Ellen Aim), and the antagonist Willem Dafoe (Raven Shaddock)—brings this cinematic masterpiece to life. From my point of view, each character’s performance is excellent and essential; honestly, without one of them, the rest wouldn’t have continuity in their scenes. Tom Cody is the protagonist’s love interest—a man of few words, but a force to be reckoned with who fears nothing. Ellen Aim is from the same town; she became a star and returned as one to charm everyone with her voice. Diane Lane really immersed herself in the role, and no one will realize that the voice isn’t hers—her singing, dancing, and acting are perfectly in sync.
As in any movie of this kind, there are always villains, and in this one, that role is played by Raven Shaddock, the leader of the gang “The Bombers.” He’s a malicious, sadistic, dangerous guy who takes whatever he wants by force; he’s downright menacing. Next up is Rick Moranis, who plays Ellen’s manager and boyfriend, Billy Fish—a very conceited and arrogant guy, but one who’s also very entertaining. In short, there are values that no amount of money in the world can buy, and here, in Streets of Fire, music, passion, love, and support are the key elements that drive the plot.
To wrap things up, the atmosphere of the film is absolutely amazing, and the cinematography is flawless; as I said before, it looks like a comic book come to life. The neon lights reflecting off the water and the action—most of which takes place on a night that seems to go on forever—are truly magical. The smoke rising from the storm drains, the constant rain—it all evokes the past within a modern setting, and as the director says, it’s a rock ’n’ roll fable. Ellen Aim es del mismo pueblo, se volvió una estrella y volvió como tal para enamorar a todos con sus voz; de verdad Diane Lane se metió en su papel y nadie se dará cuenta que la voz no es de ella; la forma de cantar, bailar y accionar están totalmente sincronizadas.
Como en toda película de este tipo, siempre hay villanos y este lo representa el lider de la pandilla Los Bombers Raven Shaddock. Para finalizar; el ambiente donde se desarrolla la película es sumamente genial, la fotografía impecable; como dije antes, parece un cómic en movimiento. Las luces de neón que se reflejan en el agua y la acción que en su mayoría se desarrolla en una noche que parece no acabar jamás, de verdad que es mágico. El humo que sale de las alcantarillas, la lluvia permanente, todo evoca el pasado en lo moderno y es como dice el director; es una fábula de Rock and roll.
