    Streets of Fire

I don't know if you know her or not, but before reading my opinion about Streets of Fire I invite you to see her Soundtrack Tonight is What It Mean to be Young, enjoy it for a few seconds, and that's it I tell you a little about her.

How not to love this movie if it is pure culture of the eighties, with the concept of the main hero and the love story. Each image of Streets of Fire is a poem, its characters are beautiful young people, the aesthetics of the video clip, its soundtrack and its Rock and Roll music still valid in its strength and momentum.

I remember when I saw it for the first time, I let myself be enveloped by all the mix of things that were in it, since it has elements like being a westerner because of the clothes of the protagonist, almost a John Wayne; the cars and motorcycles make us think that it is set in the fifties; its very eighties female protagonist, the music is Rock and Roll, the hairstyles of the motorcyclists are like those of the sixties, the commercial premises are decorated with retro elements; making it anachronistic, but all this is mixed so beautifully, in perfect balance, that it doesn't bother, that you don't stop falling in love with each shot, each moment. I loved her...

But I didn't have anyone to talk about it with much, I noticed that people didn't know it as much as other eighties movies like Karate Kid, The Exorcist, Back to the Future, E.T., Flasdance, Terminator, Jaws, Dirty Dance, etc. He did not know why.

Now researching her, I found out that the film was a failure at the time. It cost $14 million to make and only grossed $8 million. But as a phenomenon Streets of Fire became famous over the years, and today it is cataloged as a Cult Movie.

Streets of Fire by Director Walter Hill, premiered in 1984 and tells the story of Ellen Aim, a famous Rock and Roll singer who returns to her city to perform a concert and it is interrupted by a gang of bikers and criminals called Los Bombarderos (The Bombers) led by villain Raven.

The protagonist Tom Cody makes his appearance, since he is also back in his city, and his sister tells him about Ellen, who was his girlfriend once, was kidnapped and tells him to go rescue her. Yes, I know, with this plot you were never going to win an Oscar, but that's okay, not all movies have the intention of winning it, this movie had the intention of making us fall in love without being corny.

Ellen is the young and always beautiful Diane Lane, who we surely remember more adult being the unfaithful wife of Richard Gere in the movie Unfaithful.

    image.png

    Diane Lane

Cody the actor Michael Paré, who was chosen because he was beautiful, had a rough air but also inspired tenderness.

    image.png

    Michael Paré

Raven, the villain is the young and almost newbie Willem Dafoe, our Green Goblin from Spiderman, who leaves us an emblematic performance and unforgettable shots, with a very rock and almost vampire look.

    image.png

    Willem Dafoe

Another character is McCoy, a soldier who helps Cody rescue Ellen and makes a funny composition with him. This character was initially going to be male, but the actress proposed the idea that she be a woman, which was approved.

    image.png

    McCoy

And the character least appreciated by us, no, he is not the villain, we love him; It's about Ellen's manager and boyfriend, actor Rick Moranis, our remembered Ghostbuster, who here is a cowardly, petty and capitalist of the industry.

    image.png

    Rick Moranis

Streets of Fire gives us the classic scene in the rain, with beautiful shots, romantic without being cloying, and making us feel eterosexual love as a friend says on Youtube.

    image.png

    Streets of Fire

He also gives us the final fight with blunt weapons, with sledgehammers and then they leave this aside to have a fair fight, very rough with fists like mere machos, as they say in Mexico... If this isn't eighties, I don't know what is eighties then...

    Streets of Fire

I found this film very exciting and sensory, because remembering it is feeling it, feeling the sensation of speed of the motorcycles, the night scenes, the urban spaces, the beautiful shots that took care of every detail of the backgrounds, the colors, the music, the fights. and the end where the characters make decisions that are not cheesy, but very direct and personal.

I also really enjoyed all the references and influences from other movies like Sin City, Seven, the westerns, to 80s movies like Mad Max, Flasdance, all in perfect harmony.

I think it was ahead of its time, and as time goes by, the viewer has more film culture and we can appreciate all the art that Streets of Fire gave us. Here are a few words from its Director:

Walter Hill Quote: "In "Streets of Fire," I tried to make what I would have considered a perfect movie when I was a teenager. I put in all the ingredients that I thought were exceptional, and still have sympathy for. like fancy cars, kisses in the rain, overnight trains, high-speed chases, gang fights, rock stars, motorcycles, crisis jokes, leather jackets and questions of honor."

I recommend that you watch this film, you will not regret it, it is today a classic of cinema.

  2. Calles de Fuego... Un Amor entre Violencia y Rock and Roll / Streets of Fire... A Love between Violence and Rock and Roll@omarcitorojas1608d

We got into the Delorean from Back to the Future, and we went back in time to relive those 80's where the movies filled us with emotion. Cinematographic pieces, which, like the songs of the time, always remain engraved in our minds and in our hearts. In this case we go back to 1984, a time when we were able to enjoy Calles de Fuego; Although it is true that it was not a box office success since the money raised was a little more than half of its budget, for the public, at least for me it was and is a very entertaining film that meets the expectations of these times. Even more so if it comes from the hand of a director who likes everything that is evident in this film, motors, gangs, urban wars, a whole westerns within the city, this without counting on the excellent interpretations of the rock of the epoch. A whole combination worth enjoying, and that's what we come here for, to motivate you to enter the world of 80's cinema, which I'm sure everyone likes, especially if we can savor a perfect salad whose ingredients are love, drama, action, adventure, and better still a lot of rock and roll. Let's go to action.

This installment of Streets of Fire dates from 1984, directed by Walter Hill who already had great experience with the films The Warriors in 1979, Limit 48 hours in 1982, the one where the fabulous Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte intervened. As for the script for Calles de Fuego, it was written by Walter himself, accompanied by Larry Gross. Of course, its main actors Michael Paré, Diane Lane, Rick Moranis and Willen Dafoe could not miss, solid and coherent performances. It is valid to mention that this film was intended for a trilogy, however, due to its high budget and low collection, all this was left until here; and although many consider this film as Hill's failure, it cannot be denied that it achieved the goal of lasting over time over other films of the same genre. Here I am not going to tell you about the movie, because the intention is to motivate you to see it and enjoy it.

    Single, Synopsis and Impressions

For me, this film is a perfect urban western set in the 50s, as well as being a cult film where the action, the rock music and its comic-like presentation make it attractive. Where duels take place in the streets, changing weapons for hammers. It really is a work of art, whatever the critics say. Story that begins in an exciting concert where Ellen Aim, played by Diane Lane, highlights musical pieces of great caliber, she really does it so well that it seems that she really sings the songs. In the middle of that act, the chaos caused by the bombers led by Raven Shaddock begins, who kidnap the singer.

As in every love story, there is hope that the princess in distress will be rescued by her prince charming. Hope assumed by Reva, who writes to her brother, a bounty hunter and Ellen's former boyfriend, Tom Cody to rescue her. In the end he accepts and starts the great adventure and action, entering the world of motorcycles, violence, rock and very dangerous streets. Always in the company of his assistant MacCoy and manager Billy Fish.

    2021-07-03 18.46.01.png

    calles-de-fuego.jpg Fuente-Source

We cannot deny that the film is very well presented, the characters are believable and well planted. The plot catches you in all its development and not to mention the Fire Inc soundtrack, where the rhythms are extremely contagious giving that touch of emotion and magic. The photography is fantastic with a setting like it was said from the 50's, but with that futuristic touch.

I love the characterization of Ellen at the beginning where she sings the song No where fast, a scene so well done that for me, she sang the song. Without leaving aside the passion, strength and suffering at the moment of interpreting Tonigth os what It means to be Young, an instant that filled me with nostalgia.

    2021-07-03 18.46.01.png

    tumblr_mp84yqMH851snmmclo1_500.gifv.gif Fuente-Source

In fact the plot is simple, however, a perfect combination is presented to enjoy old cars, chases, rock stars, love, disenchantment, leather jackets, explosions, street duels at the point of hammers, and countless numbers of Well-made scenes with protagonists who were at the beginning of their careers. And as a highlight, for the character of Tom Cody, Eric Roberts, Tom Cruise and Patrick Swayze competed for the role, but none measured up, and although Michael Paré did not have much prominence after this film, having been chosen over those three says a lot about him.

  3. Film Review: Streets of Fire (1984)@drax1723d

    (source: tmdb.org)

If someone is successful enough in Hollywood, this earns him or her privilege to indulge in making personal dreams a reality. In early 1980s action director Walter Hill had series of big hits in his filmography and decided to make a film very much like the one imagined when he had been been a teenager. The result, 1984 action musical Streets of Fire, proved that someone’s dreams aren’t always the same thing the audience or critics would like to see.

The plot is set in some sort of parallel universe named “another time, another place” in opening title, namely the unnamed city where people wear the same clothes, hairstyles and drive the same cars as in 1950s America, but listen to music clearly belonging to 1980s. One of the greatest stars is singer Ellen Aim (played by Diane Lane) who came to hold benefit concert in her old neighbourhood of Richmond, much to displeasure of her manager and boyfriend Billy Fish (played by Rick Moranis). During the concert she is snatched from stage by Bombers, biker gang led by Raven Shaddock (played by Willem Dafoe). Luckily, one of Ellen’s fans who witnessed the kidnapping is Reva Cody (played by Deborah Van Valkenburgh), diner owner who calls her brother Tom (played by Michael Paré), former professional soldier, for help. Tom used to be Ellen’s boyfriend but he tries to be professional and agrees to rescue her in exchange for financial reward from Billy. He is joined by McCoy (played by Amy Yasbeck), tomboyish former female soldier, and they go to Battery, city district controlled by Bombers, where Ellen is held in gang’s headquarters.

This film was often compared with The Warriors, Hill’s earlier and much more successful work, and it isn’t hard to see why. Both films are set during the night and feature stylishly looking protagonists that must take dangerous journey from one part of the city to another. Streets of Fire is, however, less grounded in reality; apart from alternative retrofuturistic universe it is reflected in toned down violence. Hill has invested a lot of creative energy and budget in order to create and maintain specific style, and he mostly succeeded. But he did it at the expense of substance, namely the plot and characters. Those shortcomings are even more apparent due to some less than fortunate casting choices. Paré, dressed in long coat and armed with lever-action rifle, looks like archetypal western hero seamlessly transported into quasi-modern world, but his role is poorly written and he lacks charisma, as well as chemistry with Diane Lane who, in the first major role of her career, does somewhat better job despite lack of singing talent and her voice obviously being dubbed. Dafoe is, on the other hand, more formidable as archetypal villain who would ultimately face the protagonist in final showdown featuring hammers. Moranis is also good in the role of obnoxious manager while Yasbeck comfortably plays character originally written as a man. Dialogues are, on the other hand, mostly poor. The music, written by Hill’s associate Ry Cooder, is adequate but not exactly memorable, except for the song “I Can Dream About You” which, unlike the film, became a hit. Hill directed film well, managing to fit the story into hour and half. This would allow audience to enjoy it and not to be too distracted by its flaws.
