The Voyeurs (2021): A Deadly Pleasure [Eng / Esp]

.... English Version....

The Voyeurs (2021): A Deadly Pleasure. There are people who spy on others to derive sexual pleasure; others do it simply for the physical thrill—the adrenaline rush—that comes from feeling at the mercy of the very moment they might be discovered. Others feel so lonely that they see this as a way to feel company, believing they might be filling that void by watching. But there are also those who do this purely for pleasure, as a hobby or something to do; or, as they say where I’m from, just for the fun of it. However, engaging in this behavior can be extremely dangerous, especially if you don’t have the consent of the person being watched.

But it also turns out that you were able to start exhaling purely by chance, just as happens in the 2021 film The Voyeurs; where that chance—or, as happened to the cat, that curiosity, innocent if you will—turned into a chance encounter or a pleasure that was far too dangerous. What began as a game that escalated into something erotic went on to draw a dark line between observation and desire, eventually turning into an absolute obsession. Simply put, the film is a psychological and crime thriller, steeped in profound drama that throws the mind into chaos and distorts everyone’s reality—and I say “everyone” because this becomes a collective obsession that captivates our attention from the very first moment.

The film in question was directed by Michael Mohan, in which the filmmaker, in an absolute and masterful way, reveals how human beings, without even thinking about it, can end up giving in to and discovering the darkest desires they thought were hidden; that is, an incredible need to spy and be spied on surfaces in the protagonists. You’ll have to discover this duality for yourselves as well; furthermore, if you pay close attention, you’ll implicitly notice the director’s focus on information control and digital media—and how vulnerable these can be in a society living under the yoke of the digital age, whether centralized or decentralized—an analogy that is directly related to privacy. It’s something you must discover, analyze, internalize, and—if you wish—discuss.

As the story unfolds, we are introduced to Pippa (Sydney Sweeney) and Thomas (Justice Smith), a young couple with no apparent vices who are honestly trying to take on the world. Contrary to what many might think, their characters lead us to conclude that they have great chemistry. Ironically, Pippa works in the world of film, while Thomas is immersed in the world of music; both performances are captivating, magical, and well-developed—ordinary people in an ordinary society. However, when we shift our focus to the center of the story, we meet Sebastián (Ben Hardy) and his wife Julia (Natasha Liu Bordizzo)—a couple who break all the molds: sophisticated, explosive, and definitely generating intense tension. Their performances are precise and well-developed, and overall, all four actors bring a unique naturalness to their roles.

These four characters set the stage for a story filled with deep psychological depth and drama from the very moment they are introduced. At first, everything goes smoothly; Pippa and Thomas decide to move to a big city and start a promising relationship together. To do so, they rent their dream apartment, settle in, and soon realize that right across from them, through a huge window, lives a couple who are far too intriguing; to them, the couple is a mystery they must unravel, all because of their actions. They notice exactly when Sebastián and Julia are having sex, which leads them, out of innocent curiosity, to spy on them. At first, they do so without any tools; but then Pippa shows up with a pair of binoculars, so they can get closer to the action.

Now, what starts out as a game played purely for fun gradually escalates into an obsession. I say this because, as the plot unfolds, they realize that Sebastián doesn’t just engage in these acts with his wife; rather, since he’s a photographer, he also has sex with his models. At first, these sexual acts arouse a thrilling sense of morbid curiosity in Pippa, and as she watches, she asks Thomas to do to her what they’re doing right in front of them. Things are already taking a dangerous turn, because Pippa and Thomas no longer just want to watch—they also want to listen—so they sneak into a costume party at the couple’s apartment without permission; there, they plant a microphone so that what they see now has sound.

All of this becomes more dangerous, spirals out of control, and Thomas no longer agrees with it, but Pippa keeps going, which has negative consequences for their relationship. This situation has become so obsessive for her that she practically seeks out direct contact with Sebastián and Julia—to the point of ending up as one of the photographer’s models. This event triggers a complete breakdown in the young couple’s relationship, with outcomes that are extremely unsettling and unexpected; a plot with several interesting twists that will leave you glued to your screen, because if you think that spying without permission doesn’t come at a high price, you’re wrong. And if you think you’re just watching, you should consider that you, too, could be spied on by those above you—keep this in mind, because it’s a message you’ll have to decipher as the story unfolds.

The plot unfolds in a vast city surrounded by luxury apartment buildings; yet loneliness is palpable everywhere, because even though there are many people, we are in the presence of a society where no one cares about anyone else; they see each other, they brush past one another, but among themselves they seem like ghosts. Every room and every corner of those massive complexes—they are large, it’s true—but each of those spaces feels cold and suffocating. All of this is combined with a design and soundscape that draws you in, that you can feel in your bones, and that truly unsettles the viewer; in this case, it is we who are unsettled. A film that makes us think that these large properties are, in reality, a kind of cage covered with many windows that expose everyone’s privacy; it is a true glass cage.

It’s definitely a gripping and interesting story because it reflects the deepest aspects of human nature; where real behavior leads to the discovery of the darkest secrets. This is a film you shouldn’t miss because it’s a kind of mental roller coaster—you play with what you see, but others play with your emotions. This story makes us think that everything could be accidental—a simple game that began when you were in a certain place—because you don’t really know how things are, but deep down, you’re always the person you thought you weren’t.

But what if you had actually already been repressing that feeling? I think that’s what happened in this film, and it’s worth analyzing, because it invites us to consider that sometimes we feel so empty that we hide that feeling by turning to other things. In other words, we think we’re doing something out of mere curiosity, but deep down we’re pushing aside or avoiding the emptiness and problems we haven’t been able to resolve, replacing them with something else that allows us to escape our reality—which only deepens the problems we’ve been dragging along and creates new ones. Best regards, and see you soon.
