Buddy Daddies (2023, 12 episodes)

Review by @onlyjob · 555d · of Buddy Daddies

"Family Story of Two Killers and a Girl", as the show described itself. Admittedly, movies like "Léon: The Professional" about killers becoming parents can be quite interesting. "Buddy Daddies" is a surprisingly well executed story about team of two professional assassins adopting a small child who is only 4 years old. While they are doing their best at things they are not prepared or trained for, their work threatens their parenting success, creating many risks and conflicts. It would be a nice show about parenting if not the main premise of the story. Because, you know, being a trained killer is just what good parent needs, right? Ultimately the problem of this show is normalisation of assassins as occupation. "Look how cool those murderers are, and they are good parents too!"

There are many humorous moments that make the show worth watching. I've found it funny how one main character imagines a child being a grown-up problematic teenager. Story is weak but enjoyable, despite distracting combat scenes. Overall impression is OK.

  • Guys like us don't really get a chance at normal happiness.

  • Two hitmen raising a kid was never gonna go well.

  • Isn't struggling and sacrificing parts of your life for your kid supposed to be part of the joy of parenthood?

  • It's always the ones with the loftiest ideals who bring the greatest misfortune to their families.

  • You're so depressing to cook for.

  • A car exists to be driven. Money exists to put form to desire. Guns exist to inflict violence.

  • Sometimes it's kinder not to get involved.

  • Keeping your kid's dreams alive is part of a parent's job, right? Even if it means lying, yeah.

  • The only thing capable of transcending death is words. But most of those words, likewise, disappear into oblivion.

  • Darkness walks hand in hand with light.

  • When you're a parent, there's so much to worry about.
