Darker than Black: Kuro no Keiyakusha 「黒の契約者」 Darker than Black (2007, 26 episodes)

Review by @onlyjob · 536d · of Darker than Black

OK-ish show but its world does not make sense and the show makes no attempt to explain anything. There is no sky and stars are fake; large portion of South American continent disappeared or became physically inaccessible; massive wall separates Tokyo from a strange artefact; emotion-less girls with psychic remote vision abilities and "contractors" with supernatural powers run special operations and pay for use of their powers with obsessive-compulsive habits, like leaving upside-down shoes of victims on the crime scene (or smoke many cigarettes after using special powers, or arranging stones). Absurd special powers vary from contractor to contractor but there are no limits to type of their powers, whether it is manipulation of gravity or other forces.

Some episodes occasionally reproduce noir feeling but otherwise the show is mediocre despite likeable protagonist and interesting personalities of some characters. What drives/motivates characters is not easy to understand, like if they are not sure themselves. Some sad episodes try to be depressing for no apparent reason. Fighters ("contractors") with various special abilities fight a lot, but what for?

Occasional comedy/parody episodes about private detective agency (one man and his funny teenage assistant).

(As I was watching the show, I've recognised that I've already seen it before, yet I could not recall what is going to happen. That made me realise that the show is not memorable, despite being mildly entertaining.)
