The story takes place ten years before the series begins. A supernatural phenomenon appears in Tokyo and South America, primarily affecting Brazil, rendering these areas nearly impossible to access and explore. These phenomena and the resulting zones are known as "Hell's Gate" and "Heaven's Gate," respectively; both gates are the "faces" of the same entity. These phenomena have several consequences: Tokyo loses its natural sky and the visibility of stars, replaced by bright points that simulate them. Some people are randomly affected (seemingly) and acquire special abilities.
La historia se desarrolla diez años antes de lo que se presenta como el inicio de la serie. Un fenómeno sobrenatural aparece en Tokio y América del Sur, afectando principalmente a Brasil, convirtiéndolos en zonas de acceso y exploración casi imposibles. A estos fenómenos y a las zonas resultantes se les conoce como "Hell's Gate" (La Puerta del Infierno) y "Heaven's Gate" (La Puerta del Cielo) respectivamente; ambas puertas son las "caras" de una misma entidad. Estos fenómenos tuvieron varias consecuencias: Tokio pierde su cielo natural y la visualización de estrellas, apareciendo en su lugar unos puntos brillantes que lo simulan. Algunas personas son afectadas aleatoriamente (en apariencia) y adquieren habilidades especiales.
Thanks to this phenomenon, people are also affected, divided into categories such as Dolls, Contractors, and Maratoriums. This results in the first two categories lacking empathy and emotional connection, while the latter are unstable and quickly lose control under stress. Furthermore, to keep the world running, private government organizations of assassins operate with a high degree of secrecy. This is where our protagonist, Hei, comes in. He works for the Tokyo Syndicate but operates under the Chinese name Lee Shen Shun, codenamed BK201. Hei is sent to Tokyo along with another squad consisting of Yin, Mao, and Huang, who operate under the Syndicate's orders, while the Tokyo Special Police investigate cases involving Contractors and close in on them.
Gracias a este fenómeno, también se afecta a las personas dividiéndolas en dolls, contratistas y maratoriums. Esto provoca que las dos primeras denominaciones carezcan de empatía y conexión emocional, mientras que las últimas son inestables y se descontrolan rápidamente cuando experimentan mucho estrés. Además, para que el mundo siga funcionando, se crean organizaciones gubernamentales privadas de asesinos que operan bajo un grado de confidencialidad bastante sigiloso. Es aquí donde entra nuestro protagonista, Hei, quien trabaja para el sindicato de Tokio, pero opera bajo el nombre chino de Lee Shen Shun y su código es BK201. As the story progresses, we see situations become much more complex, with a rather obvious imbalance between ordinary people who didn't acquire abilities and those who did. The central plot revolves around the decision of whether the Contractors and others should take control of society or, conversely, serve ordinary people. As these discussions unfold, the decision that Hei and his squad must make becomes increasingly important and indispensable.
A medida que avanza la historia, observamos que las situaciones se tornan mucho más complejas, con un desequilibrio bastante evidente entre las personas normales que no adquirieron habilidades y aquellas que sí lo hicieron. La trama central gira en torno a la decisión de si los contratistas y demás deberían tomar el control de la sociedad o si, por el contrario, deberían servir a las personas normales. Mientras estas discusiones se desarrollan, la decisión que Hei y su escuadrón deben tomar se vuelve cada vez más importante e indispensable.
What the series shows us is, basically, some mental disorders, such as the split personality Hei exhibits when he has to pretend to be someone else within the school where he's infiltrated. His special ability is to generate electrical discharges through conductors; that is, he can't generate electricity through air or concrete. In addition to this, in certain episodes, a small spark of feelings is shown for his partner Yin, who is a medium and can have visions through water. Previously, she didn't show any feelings, but over time, being with Hei, she begins to develop a love for him, becoming rebellious and acquiring her own personality. As for the ending of the series, it's quite satisfying, since our protagonists end up together. Other things happen, but I won't give away too many spoilers. It's a somewhat open ending that leaves you with the feeling that the story could possibly continue, although that doesn't happen. If I remember correctly, there are one or two OVAs that show the protagonists' past and their lives before the tragedy, as well as giving us a preview of why something quite common in anime of this era was generated (another example is Owari no Seraph with the vampire apocalypse).
Lo que nos muestra la serie es, básicamente, algunos trastornos mentales, como la doble personalidad que presenta Hei al tener que fingir ser otra persona dentro del instituto en el que está infiltrado. Su habilidad especial es generar descargas eléctricas a través de conductores, es decir, que no puede generar electricidad por medio del aire o el hormigón. Además de esto, en ciertos capítulos se muestra una pequeña chispa de sentimientos hacia su compañera Yin, quien es médium y puede tener visiones a través del agua. Anteriormente, ella no mostraba sentimientos, pero con el tiempo, al estar con Hei, comienza a desarrollar un amor por él, volviéndose rebelde y adquiriendo personalidad propia. En cuanto al final de la serie, es bastante satisfactorio, ya que nuestros protagonistas terminan juntos. Ocurren otras cosas, pero no voy a dar tantos spoilers. Es un final algo abierto que te deja con la sensación de que posiblemente la historia pueda continuar, aunque eso no va a suceder. Si no recuerdo mal, hay una o dos OVA que muestran el pasado de los protagonistas y sus vidas antes de la tragedia, además de darnos un adelanto de por qué se generó algo bastante común en los animes de esta época (otro ejemplo es Owari no Seraph con el apocalipsis vampírico).
I recommend watching this series because it's so entertaining and explores existentialist philosophical themes, as the protagonist holds important decisions in his hands regarding how people's destinies unfold. It also traces what could be considered the beginning of Nightgore culture, and the soundtrack is simply epic. What I love most about this anime is that it premiered in 2007, the year I was born, so I have a great fondness for it. Although, in my opinion, the story could have been explored in more depth, as it had a lot of potential, and the plot feels a bit slow, this doesn't detract from how well-structured the series is. Recomiendo ver esta serie por lo entretenida que es y los temas filosóficos existencialistas que aborda, ya que el protagonista tiene en sus manos las decisiones importantes sobre cómo se desarrollará el destino de las personas. Además, sigue un poco lo que podría ser el inicio de la cultura Nigthgore y la banda sonora es simplemente épica. Lo que más amo de este anime es que se estrenó en 2007, el año en que nací, por lo que le tengo un gran aprecio. Aunque, a mi parecer, la historia podría haberse profundizado un poco más, ya que tenía mucho potencial y la trama me parece un poco lenta, esto no le quita lo bien estructurada que está la serie.
