Avengers: Infinity War was one of the MCU movies I had been waiting for the most. By this point, I already watched so many of these characters in their own movies, and seeing them finally come together on such a huge scale felt like a big moment.
What surprised me was how quickly the movie got serious. There was still plenty of Marvel humor, but the overall feeling was much heavier than most of the earlier Avengers movies. From the beginning, it was clear that this was not going to be a simple superhero adventure.
I guess, the biggest reason the movie worked was Thanos. Instead of keeping the villain in the background until the final act, the movie made him feel like a major part of the story. Josh Brolin's performance gave him a calm and almost thoughtful personality, which made him more interesting than a villain who simply shouted and destroyed everything.
I also liked how the movie handled such a huge number of characters. There were so many heroes involved that it could easily become confusing, but the different groups gave the movie some variety. Seeing characters who never met before suddenly working together created some really fun interactions.
The Guardians of the Galaxy were especially entertaining when they met the Avengers. Their personalities were so different that I enjoyed almost every conversation between them. Thor's interactions with Rocket and Groot were also a lot of fun, and the movie somehow made those strange combinations completely natural.
Then there was Spider-Man.
Tom Holland continued to bring a younger energy to the MCU, and putting Peter together with older heroes worked really well. His excitement was still there, but Infinity War also gave him situations that felt much more serious than what he had experienced in Homecoming.
Tony Stark was another character I paid a lot of attention to. After everything he had experienced in the previous MCU movies, he seemed more serious and much more aware of the consequences of losing.
The action was probably some of the best in the MCU up to that point. What I liked was that the fights were not just long sequences of people hitting each other. Different heroes used their abilities in different ways, and the combinations were fun to watch.
The battle in Wakanda was a particular highlight for me. After seeing Wakanda in Black Panther, it was exciting to return there and see its characters fighting alongside the Avengers. The scale was huge, but the movie still gave individual characters moments to stand out.
I also enjoyed the Doctor Strange side of the movie. His powers already looked strange in his own movie, but Infinity War pushed them much further. Watching him work alongside Tony and Peter created a combination that I did not expect to enjoy as much as I did.
One thing I respected about Infinity War was that it did not spend too much time explaining every character again. By this point, the audience already knew these people. The movie trusted that knowledge and moved forward, which helped keep the huge story moving.
Overall, Avengers: Infinity War was one of the biggest MCU experiences for me, of course before Endgame hit the theater. The huge cast, strong villain, impressive action, character interactions and serious tone all worked together very well.
More than anything, it made me appreciate how much the MCU had grown by that point. These were no longer separate superhero stories that happened to exist in the same universe. They finally reached a point where everything felt connected, and Infinity War made full use of that.
