Guardians of the Galaxy was one of those Marvel movies that I did not know what to expect from before watching it. We had Peter Quill, a talking raccoon who doesn't want to be called a raccoon, a tree that could barely say anything, a green assassin and a huge guy who mostly wanted to smash things. Somehow, Marvel made all of them work together.
The movie started with Peter as a kid on Earth before taking him into space years later. I liked how the movie mixed the colorful space setting with old songs from Peter's childhood, because the music became a big part of his character instead of just being background sound. I was a fan of "Hooked on a Feeling" when I was a young kid and I had crush on a girl, lol. I should review the song next.
The visual style also stood out to me. Almost every planet and location looked completely different, from the busy streets of Xandar to the strange prison and the dark places where Ronan's people operated. It gave the movie a lot of variety without making everything look the same.
The part where Peter, Rocket, Groot and Gamora ended up in prison was probably where the movie really started becoming fun for me. They did not like each other at first, but they still had to work together to get out, and the whole escape plan was full of stupid little arguments and funny moments.
Then came the prison escape itself. Rocket had already figured out exactly what they needed, but the problem was that some of the things he needed were attached to other people. Watching the group running around trying to collect everything while Peter and Rocket kept arguing was one of the funniest parts of the movie.
But the scene that really stayed with me was the one where Peter tried to get everyone to work together by talking about the people they had lost. They were not really a team yet, but they finally understood that they had something worth protecting. That was when the whole group started feeling like a real family instead of five random people who happened to meet.
The final battle over Xandar was another big highlight. The Guardians joined the Nova Corps and tried to stop Ronan's ship from reaching the planet, and seeing this bunch of weird characters actually fighting together was just fun to watch. Groot's sacrifice was also a surprisingly emotional moment, especially because he had spent most of the movie being funny without saying much.
Chris Pratt was a great fit for Peter Quill, but Rocket and Groot ended up stealing a lot of my attention. Rocket's attitude made almost every scene more entertaining, while Groot was probably the simplest character in the group, but somehow his small moments had a lot of feeling. Dave Bautista as Drax also surprised me because his very serious way of understanding things became one of the funniest parts of the movie.
What I liked most about Guardians of the Galaxy was that the movie was really about a group of people who had all lost something and did not really have a proper place to call home. They started out as strangers who only cared about themselves, but by the end, they had become a family. And honestly, that was what made me enjoy the movie so much.
