Thor: The Dark World came after The Avengers, and this time Thor had to deal with an old enemy called Malekith and a dangerous weapon called the Aether. The story also brought Jane back into Thor's life and, more importantly, gave us another chance to see what was going on with Loki after his defeat.
The movie started with a much darker feeling than the first Thor. Asgard looked huge and beautiful, but the Dark Elves and their world had a much colder look, while the red Aether gave some nice contrast whenever it appeared.
I also liked how much of the story moved between Asgard and Earth. The Earth scenes with Jane, Darcy and Selvig gave the movie some funny moments, while Asgard brought the bigger fantasy side of the story. Still, the first half felt a little slow to me and took some time before things really got moving.
The part I enjoyed most was when the Dark Elves attacked Asgard. The whole place suddenly went from a peaceful royal city to a battlefield, and Kurse caused a lot of trouble while Thor and the Asgardians tried to stop the attack.
Frigga's death made that whole section hit harder. She did not just stand around while everything was happening, she actually fought back, and her connection with Loki made her death even more important for what came later.
Then Thor had no choice but to go to Loki for help. I really liked those scenes because their relationship was never simple, and watching them leave Asgard together gave the movie some of its best moments. Their arguments, jokes and little tricks were much more interesting to me than most of the actual villain scenes.
The final fight in Greenwich was probably the most fun part of the movie. Thor and Malekith kept getting thrown between different locations and even different realms because of the Aether, so the fight kept changing instead of just being two characters hitting each other in one place.
In the end, Thor: The Dark World was not perfect, and I could understand why some people found the story weaker than the other Marvel movies from that time. But I still enjoyed the family side of it, especially Thor, Loki, Odin and Frigga, because underneath all the magic, aliens and big battles, the movie was really about a family dealing with loss and trying to figure out what they meant to each other.
