Hola querido hiver.
Este verano me he tomado un largo descanso de Hive pero ya estoy aquí de nuevo con las energías renovadas. Una de las mejores formas de remolonear, para mí, es viendo películas o series que me atrapen. Podría decir que este ha sido mi "verano Peaky Blinders", ya que casi todas las tardes he visto un par de capítulos.
Si he devorado las seis temporadas una tras otra más el plus de la película estrenada este año, es obvio que me ha gustado. Mucho. No soy de continuar una serie solo por haberla comenzado a ver. Actualmente se crea contenido a una velocidad como para llenar vidas enteras, por lo que no me duele abandonar lo que no me aporta.
Centrándonos en la serie que nos ocupa en este post, te cuento que la comencé a ver porque Cillian Murphy me atrapó en su interpretación de Oppenheimer. Hasta ese momento no había visto ninguno de sus trabajos anteriores, aunque su caracterización como Thomas, el jefe del clan de los Shelby en el Birmingham de principios del siglo XX, no me era desconocida.
El argumento es el clásico conflicto entre gangsters con las apuestas ilegales y la ley seca como fondo, acompañados por tragedias familiares entre las que no falta ni un solo ingrediente: celos, traiciones, traumas arrastrados durante décadas, enamoramientos e infidelidades… Puede gustarte más o menos, pero es seguro que todos pueden encontrar en esta serie un personaje o trama con los que identificarse.
Los Peaky Blinders como banda criminal existieron en la realidad pero la serie se despega de ellos en cuanto a todas las tramas. Puede que por eso se sienta más real.
En la primera temporada se presenta a la familia y el conflicto principal gira en torno a la persecución de los Peaky Blinders por parte del inspector Campbell (Sam Neil). Se ayuda de una agente que se infiltra en la organización, pero ella y Thomas se enamoran… y ya tenemos el conflicto servido. El resto es ambición, ambición y más ambición. Los Shelby no se conforman jamás con lo que obtienen y cada vez que logran algo ya piensan en qué más conseguir. Las vidas personales y profesionales (si es que lo de ser gángster se puede considerar un oficio) se entremezclan y cada miembro familiar vive su particular aventura y desventura. Aparecerán nobles rusos, mafiosos judíos, italianos y de Chicago, nazis… en un buen repaso a la historia de Europa en la primera mitad del pasado siglo.
Como suele ocurrir en las series cuyo rodaje se prolonga durante años, los personajes sufren cambios que se evidencian además de por sus reacciones ante los conflictos que se suceden, por los físicos. Esto incluye alguna que otra pérdida real por la muerte de los actores que interpretaban papeles principales y que se sienten como jarros de agua fría. Pero al mismo tiempo, suponen un último legado que nos dejan con sus trabajos y por el que sin duda les recordaré para siempre.
El gran éxito de la serie es más que merecido para mí. La ambientación está muy lograda tanto en exteriores como en interiores, con la atmósfera de esa Inglaterra que se levanta como puede de tras la Primera Guerra Mundial entre niebla sucia y carbón. El vestuario de la época lo acompaña, algo que no sucede con el vocabulario. Quizás alguien como hablase realmente así, lo desconozco, pero me resultó chocante en algunas escenas. Sin embargo, la banda sonora es puro rock que lejos de desentonar en las escenas de acción, las potencia y te pone los pelos de punta con cada golpe, sea de los puños en la pantalla o de las guitarras en los oídos.
Por otra parte, se siente cómo el presupuesto que el equipo tenía disponible aumentó conforme crecía el éxito de la serie. En las últimas dos temporadas hay ángulos de cámara imposibles que son puro cine, una delicia para aquellos que no nos conformamos con ver y miramos un poco más allá. Quizás abusan un poco de tratar de impresionar con grandes explosiones, pero lo compensan con creces en los planos de paisajes idílicos cuidadosamente detallados y evocadores.
Si no has visto Peaky Blinders, te la recomiendo sin dudas. Es una de esas series que no me importaría repetir en el futuro, algo que no descarto.

This summer I’ve taken a long break from Hive, but I’m back now with renewed energy. One of the best ways to laze about, for me, is by watching films or TV series that really draw me in. I’d say this has been my ‘Peaky Blinders summer’, as I’ve watched a couple of episodes almost every afternoon.
Given that I’ve devoured all six series back-to-back, plus the film released this year, it’s obvious I’ve enjoyed it. A lot. I’m not the sort to stick with a series just because I’ve started watching it. Content is currently being churned out at a rate that could fill entire lifetimes, so I have no qualms about dropping anything that doesn’t do it for me.
Turning to the series we’re discussing in this post, I’ll tell you that I started watching it because Cillian Murphy captivated me with his portrayal of Oppenheimer. Until then, I hadn’t seen any of his previous work, although his portrayal of Thomas, the head of the Shelby clan in early 20th-century Birmingham, was not unfamiliar to me.
The plot centres on the classic conflict between gangsters involved in illegal gambling, set against the backdrop of Prohibition, accompanied by family tragedies that leave no stone unturned: jealousy, betrayals, traumas carried over for decades, romances and infidelities… You may like it more or less, but everyone is sure to find a character or storyline in this series with which to identify.
The Peaky Blinders did exist in real life as a criminal gang, but the series diverges from them in terms of all the storylines. Perhaps that’s why it feels more realistic.
The first series introduces the family, and the main conflict centres on Inspector Campbell’s (Sam Neill) pursuit of the Peaky Blinders. He enlists the help of a female officer who goes undercover within the organisation, but she and Thomas fall in love… and there you have the conflict. The rest is ambition, ambition and more ambition. The Shelbys are never satisfied with what they’ve got, and every time they achieve something, they’re already thinking about what else to get their hands on. Their personal and professional lives (if being a gangster can even be considered a profession) become intertwined, and each family member experiences their own particular adventures and misadventures. Russian nobles, Jewish and Italian mobsters, Chicago gangsters and Nazis all make an appearance… in a comprehensive overview of European history during the first half of the last century.
As is often the case with series whose filming spans several years, the characters undergo changes that are evident not only in their reactions to the conflicts that unfold, but also in their physical appearances. This includes the occasional real-life loss due to the deaths of actors playing leading roles, which feel like a bucket of cold water. Yet at the same time, these deaths represent a final legacy they leave us through their work, and for which I will undoubtedly remember them forever.
In my view, the series’ huge success is more than deserved. The setting is superbly realised both outdoors and indoors, capturing the atmosphere of an England struggling to get back on its feet after the First World War, amidst dirty fog and coal. The period costumes complement this perfectly, something which isn’t the case with the dialogue. Perhaps people really did speak like that back then – I don’t know – but I found it jarring in some scenes. However, the soundtrack is pure rock which, far from clashing with the action scenes, enhances them and sends shivers down your spine with every blow, whether from fists on screen or guitars in your ears.
On the other hand, you can really sense how the budget available to the team grew as the series’ success increased. In the last two series, there are impossible camera angles that are pure cinema – a delight for those of us who aren’t content just to watch, but look a little deeper. Perhaps they go a bit overboard trying to impress with big explosions, but they more than make up for it with shots of idyllic, carefully detailed and evocative landscapes.
If you haven’t seen Peaky Blinders, I’d definitely recommend it. It’s one of those series I wouldn’t mind rewatching in the future – something I’m not ruling out.
