I saw this film (Oliver Twist 1948) a few nights ago and found it a bit funny and yes, a bit light-hearted at times.
The scenes and situations were guessable, although at certain points in the film there were briefly disturbing, so that's where the quality of this film falls short (at least some of these moments would have added more).
But then again considering it's a 1948 film, the thing is I think it's hard to claim more stage quality as you can.
I really think it's hard to ask for more stage quality, as, yes, you can ask for narrative and stage quality in other films of the time (considering that there were good writers and directors in certain specific films).
I saw a film that felt nothing, a little frustrating in places, stalled in an unexpectedly awkward mise-en-scene and, at times, I thought she looked tired in places.
What's really disappointing is that I should also add that all the Oliver Twist films have been terrible for me (except the 2006 Oliver Twist remake, which was more or less touching).
Yes, the book is interesting, but his films are miserable failures (except for the last one mentioned).
I thought the 1948 version was nothing but monotony without progress, and beyond that, it didn't move at all.
But hey, all that aside... maybe someone will like all the versions of Oliver Twist (as far as films go).
