Battle, battle, battle!

This week, The Gifted went into full blown action mode! No exploring of social themes, no sending of subtle messages, nothing! Just a continuous show of abilities and incredibly tense action sequences, between the Mutant Underground and Sentinel Services. Exciting from the first second to the very last!
Most impressively, The Gifted is doing a great job of being well-balanced in all its character arcs and build-ups. In fact, I can safely say the show is proving to really be more about the mutant world around the members of the underground than about just the Struckers. The mutant underground is shown to have been fighting the battle long before The Struckers came into the picture, taking big risks and sustaining heavy losses, but also making little gains. Unfortunately for the Struckers, the clashes with Sentinel Services have served to greatly reduce general morale, leading to only 5 of the multitude volunteering for the long awaited Lorna-Reed rescue mission.
To get information, Marcoz/Eclipse returns to the family he lived with after he was thrown out of his home –the Mexican Cartel, now run by his old flame Carmen, who is intent on making him suffer for leaving her. Lorna and Reed finally join forces inside prison to take their chance when it comes, and John/Thunderbird leads the group of volunteers in Dreamer, Blink, Marcoz, the Vanishing man, and the Struckers, who have developed an awesome power combo on the mission. What an intense battle! What high stakes! At every point, it seemed everything could go wrong, and –kudos to the writers –it sure did! The mutants, relying on their abilities, find themselves stymied when it’s revealed that one of their old teammate, Pulse, with the ability to hinder other mutant’s abilities, is alive and working with Sentinel services. Clarice/Blink is distracted by the intense attraction she now feels towards Thunderbird and trying to reconcile her memories with those given to her by Dreamer last week. Andy/ Destructor suffers from a moment of self-doubt which almost ruins everything, and Marcoz, driven to anger by Carmen’s antics is desperate enough to do anything, including go off-plan, to get Lorna back.

Finally, though, everyone comes through. Thunderbird shows some amazing fighting skills in taking out Pulse, and Reed and Lorna reach an understanding –she takes out the metal pins in his knee and uses them to disable the guards and take down the truck. And the action isn’t over. With Sentinel Services Officer Jace Turner on the Warpath after their escape, next week promises to be an explosive continuation of this week’s battle.
